Self-consistent equilibrium and nonequilibrium charge-state models are formulated for the spherical expansion of low-Z pellet vapor as an inviscid perfect gas of constant ratio of specific heats being heated volumetrically by the incident electrons of a thermonuclear plasma. The two models are found to be in agreement in the region where the ratio of the ionization length ζ_j to pellet radius r_p is less than unity, but a single parameter, such as the magnitude of this ratio on the sonic surface, is insufficient to determine whether an equilibrium model will be valid for all regions of the ablatant …

The hard X-ray intensity radial profiles from lower hybrid current drive experiments are interpreted as being correlated with fluctuations in the bulk plasma. This view seems to be dictated by comparing the hard X-ray data for various n_║ with the Monte Carlo solutions of the lower hybrid wave energy deposition on plasma electrons. Information on internal magnetic fluctuations may, under certain conditions, be unfolded from a n_║ scan of the hard X-ray profiles.

The ablation dynamics of LiT pellets are solved self-consistently over a modest range of parameters using a surface dissociation model. The self-consistently determined parameters are then used to modify the standard low-Z pellet penetration codes. Since LiT pellets have certain advantages over carbon [in particular, Li conditioning of the walls and T for refueling a D-T reaction], the penetration of LiT into fusion plasmas is considered.

Cross sections are calculated for electromagnetic wave scattering and mode transformation from magnetic and density fluctuations in a homogeneous plasma. For the special case of scattering perpendicular to the magnetic field, density fluctuations scatter ordinary to ordinary and extraordinary to extraordinary modes-but cannot transform these modes. On the other hand, magnetic fluctuations perpendicular to the field can transform modes but cannot scatter on a single branch. For incident frequencies on the order of the electron plasma frequency or gyrofrequency, the cross sections for scattering and transformation due to field and density fluctuations have a similar value. This thesis surveys linearisation techniques for implementing monolithic MOS active resistors and transconductors, and investigates the design of linear tunable resistors and transconductors. Improving linearity and tunability in the presence of non-ideal factors such as bulk modulation, mobility-degradation effects and mismatch of transistors is a principal objective. A family of new non-saturation-mode resistors and two novel saturation-mode transconductors are developed. Where possible, approximate analytical expressions are derived to explain the principles of operation. Performance comparisons of the new structures are made with other well-known circuits and their relative advantages and disadvantages evaluated. This qualitative study is introduced through a discussion of peer response groups and the researcher's interest in them. The guiding question of whether peer response groups are as useful for teaching writing ESOL classrooms as in first language classrooms is stated along with supplementary research questions. These are fol lowed by a review of relevant theories and summaries of peer response group hi story, social and cultural factors, and research done on peer response groups in first and additional language classrooms.

This thesis describes the research leading from the conception, through development, to the practical implementation of a comprehensive security architecture for use within, and as a value-added enhancement to, the ISO Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. The Comprehensive Security System (CSS) is arranged basically as an Application Layer service but can allow any of the ISO recommended security facilities to be provided at any layer of the model. Naturally occurring pressure fluctuations have been observed in two-phase flows by a number of researchers for example Matsui [1984]. This thesis Investigates the nature of these pressure fluctuations within vertically upward bubbly two-phase flows with a view to developing a novel non-intrusive pressure correlation technique for use downhole to monitor the area average dispersed phase velocity, Vg. It is generally believed that the formation of recalcitrant (slowly desorbing) fractions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soils is due to diffusion of compounds to sorption sites inaccessible to bulk fluid. The exact nature of these sites, however, is not well understood. In clay minerals, researchers favor two probable areas for the storage of persistent contamination; sites between the clay lamella, or sites with clay particle aggregates.

Enhanced enteric delivery systems were examined in the cichlid Oreochromis mossambicus to evaluate the requirements for potential oral vaccination strategies in teleost fish. Human gamma globulin (HGG) was delivered enterically (orally or anally) to the intestine of O.mossambicus as a standard test antigen. The co-administration of the saponin Quillaja saponaria (Quil-A) was evaluated as a novel oral adjuvant, delivered with the antigen in a soluble form and also as a delivery vehicle in the form of micelles and immunestimulatory complexes (ISCOMS). HGG absorption across the intestine was monitored utilising sensitive immunocytochemical techniques which showed that the enterically delivered antigen was …

A standardised procedure was established for the laboratory maintenance of C.irritans in thick-lipped mullet. Nine isolates of C.irritans were obtained of which eight were successfully established for up to 48 weeks. Studies on individual life cycle stages with regards to longevity, viability, and susceptibility to a chemotherapeutic agent, revealed the difficulties in eradicating the cysts. Transmission of the parasite both to and from the host correlated with darkness. High infection levels resulted in the death of host fish within five days following exposure to theronts. The purpose of this study was to identify the ontogeny of effective middle level teachers. The study was a search through their lives, both professional and private, for those elements that they perceived have contributed to their professional development and consequent attitudes and perspectives on teaching.

A sample of 12 teachers was obtained through reputational-case selection, a process by which teachers were nominated by experts on the basis of their professional expertise. All participants were middle level teachers from two Midwestern states who had at least 10 years of teaching experience.

This study examined the comparability of the WISC-Rand WISC-III subtest and scale scores. The Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Organization, and Freedom from Distractibility indices were also examined for comparability. The researcher administered the WISC-Rand WISC-III in a counterbalanced design to 20 rural, Caucasian, midwestern children ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old. On both the WISC-Rand WISC-III, means and standard deviations were computed for the subtest scaled scores, scaled index scores, and Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs. The subjects are undergraduate students at a state university, and attend a university support group for individuals with eating disorders. The intent of this study was to investigate if a small population of bulimic college women could lend themselves to a specific profile for bulimic women. When students in small urban or rural areas are identified as at-risk, they are often visualized as possessing the same traits as at-risk students in very large metropolitan areas. This visualization is often based on both traditional quantitative studies and on qualitative interpretive research. In this study, based primarily on interpretive descriptive models, at-risk ninth-grade students from a small Midwestern urban area were interviewed to determine their attitudes and understandings about school. The data collected represents a highly localized view and indicates that these students' views seem to coincide with traditional values and beliefs.

The effects of expository writing (a writing to learn approach) on achievement in a math unit on fractions was investigated. Two groups of intact sixth grade mathematics classes (N = 44) were chosen and the treatment of expository writing was randomly assigned to one group. The control group received direct instruction for the unit on addition and subtraction of fractions while the treatment group practiced expository writing (a how-to descriptive writing) plus direct instruction. This study focused around a research question involving middle and upper socioeconomic status children: Do public school second graders who previously attended Montessori preschools demonstrate higher cognitive abilities (as measured by the Cognitive Abilities Test) than second graders who attended traditional preschools or did not attend preschool? Although there was a wide variability of scores within each group, t-tests analyses revealed significant differences favoring preschool attenders when compared to those who did not attend preschool, and for Montessori preschoolers when compared to the other groups.
