The text of this dissertation explores interconnections between cosmology and curriculum. I believe the demands of an Ecozoic Age will initiate a reconceptualizing of curriculum. Further, I believe the particular cosmological perspective I advance can help us with this reconceptualization. Chapter 1 utilizes the multi-faceted insights of scientific, historical, and speculative thought. The texts used in this chapter incorporate an engagement with past cultures (Ong, Eliade), with contemporary theoretical perspectives (Munitz, Haught, and Stafford), and with a scholarship that envisions alternative futures (Bohm). Behavioral Influences On Predator-Prey Interactions Between Juvenile Teleosts And Meiofauna., John Nathan Mccall

Predator-prey relationships between post-larval and juvenile teleosts are greatly influenced by the manner in which feeding behavior of fish interacts with the behavior of meiofaunal prey. Juvenile starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus Pallas) in a southeastern Alaskan bay fed disproportionately on the harpacticoid copepod Microarthridion littorale (Poppe), particularly on males. This apparent selectivity was not due to differing vertical distribution of harpacticoid species or to feeding in other locations. Comparison of ingested prey to harpacticoid assemblages collected by various techniques (including near-bottom collections) suggested that the prey selection shown by starry flounder may be the result of emergent behavior of its …

This study presents comprehensive organic geochemical evidence of organic-rich marine shales in the middle Eocene lower part of the Claiborne Group and the lower Eocene-Paleocene Wilcox Group of south Louisiana. The shales are the only post-Cretaceous age sediments in the northwest Gulf of Mexico basin that fit the conventional criteria for liquid hydrocarbon source rocks. Visual and geochemical evidence suggests that the Paleogene shales contain terrestrially derived, amorphous kerogen with high hydrogen indices whose oil potential has been upgraded by bacterial degradation. The Paleogene section is at immature to late mature levels with respect to petroleum generation, at present-day burial …

Studies dealing with the availability and speciation of arsenic (As) as affected by soil redox potential and pH were initiated because of the lack of information on As chemistry in flooded soils. The chemistry of native and applied As was studied in a Crowley silt loam soil (Typic Albaqualf). Arsenic uptake and its toxic effect on two rice cultivars as affected by As chemical form and concentration were also studied. Soil redox potential and pH were shown to affect speciation and solubility of both native and applied As. Upon soil reduction, indigenous-As solubility increased, and arsenite (As(III)) comprised most of …

In a biochemical systematic study of the tribe Heliantheae, the isolation and structural elucidation of secondary metabolites from four species is reported. The aerial parts of Melampodium leucanthum afforded, besides the known melampolides melampodin A acetate, leucanthin B and leucanthinin, the new lactone leucanthinin-4-epoxide. Peracid oxidation of leucanthinin provided its monoepoxide derivative, the physical and spectroscopical data of which were identical with the new natural lactone. The isolation and structural elucidation of 7$\alpha$-hydroxydehydrocostus lactone, 13-hydroxy-11,13-dihydro-7,11-dehydro-3-desoxy-zaluzanin C and reynosin from Podachaenium eminens is reported. The isolation of the furanoheliangolides atripliciolide 2-methylbutyrate, atripliciolide tiglate and 17,18-dihydrobudlein A from Pappobolus nigrescens was accomplished. …

Autobiography in curriculum theory and practice is being more and more acknowledged as a major force leading toward the development of reflectively analytical teachers, reflexive practitioners, and discursively self-aware individuals. I look to two vital aspects of self-narration to explore. I speak firstly of memory, without which narrative continuity would be impossible. Memory is as involved with learning as it is with storytelling, and I would agree with Krell (1978) that "inquiry into memory and the theory of pedagogy go hand in hand" (p. 131). This work focuses on the production and characterization of crosslinked products obtained from PS II preparations, with the aim of better understanding the structural relationships between the manganese stabilizing protein (MSP) and the interior antenna protein CPa-1. Two oxygen evolving reaction center (OERC) preparations, OERC complex and OERC core, produced various crosslinked products with the hydrophobic crosslinker dithio-bis-(succinimidyl propionate) (DTSP). Crosslinking experiments with OERC complex demonstrated that a close association of MSP to CPa-1 occurs, as both proteins were found to be present simultaneously in various crosslinked products revealed by one- and two-dimensional electrophoretic and immunoblotting techniques. DRAINMOD-CREAMS model was used to simulate surface runoff and sediment loss from subsurface drained plot and non-subsurface drained plot in southern Louisiana. Seven years (1981-1987) of recorded data were used in this study. In general, the performance of the model in simulating surface runoff and sediment loss from subsurface drained plot is satisfactory. However, the DRAINMOD-CREAMS model did not simulate surface runoff and sediment loss accurately from non-subsurface drained plot. The CREAMS nutrient submodel was also tested on both plots. The CREAMS model seriously overestimates the nitrogen loss from non-subsurface drained plot. The sensitivity of the DRAINMOD-CREAMS model on erodibility …

Integrated pollution control, or IPC, can be defined for now as an approach to environmental regulation that "seeks particularly to link air, water, and waste programs. Its concern is institutional changes that reduce total risk to the environment from pollutants." 8 This sounds remarkably appealing, which perhaps explains IPC's recurring popularity. As we shall see, it enjoyed a brief celebrity about twenty years ago, and it is once again in vogue-especially within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Dichloroacetic acid (DCA) and chloroform (CHCl{dollar}\\sb3{dollar}) both are major by-products formed during chlorination of drinking water. The potential threat to public health, of these compounds, is of great concern. Male and female rats were gavaged with DCA (2.45 mmol/kg), and then received an i.p. injection of CHCl{dollar}\\sb3{dollar} (0.25 ml/kg). The activities of plasma liver enzymes and the contents of plasma bilirubin were markedly increased in DCA-pretreated rats compared to their saline-pretreated controls. The possible mechanisms of CHCl{dollar}\\sb3{dollar}-induced hepatotoxicity potentiated by DCA treatment were investigated. It was hypothesized that the bioactivation of CHCl{dollar}\\sb3{dollar} in rats was enhanced by DCA treatment. The …

Participants included eight secondary and post-secondary teachers from North America and Lithuania. Experimental results are reported on the biological atmospheric oxidation of FeS{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} embedded within mine rocks in the presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Three different potentially acid-producing rock samples from different coal seams are used. The rate of FeS{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} conversion or production of acid is studied with respect to sterility and variations in temperature, and particle size. Pore size distributions as well as changes in porosity with conversion have been determined for both inoculated and sterilized samples. It is found, under the same experimental conditions, that the inoculated samples produce five times more acid than the sterilized ones. This is attributed to …

This was a qualitative study investigating countertransference reactions toward incest victims and how these reactions impacted the therapist. Two caucasian male and two caucasian female therapists were participants. Their level of education varied from masters' degrees (n = 3) to a doctoral degree (n = 1). Years of experience ranged from 5 to 25 years. Each participant agreed to an in-depth interview, to maintain a journal for three months recording reactions toward two current sexual abuse clients, and to an exit interview. Qualitative analyses employing recommendations by Hycner (1985) were utilized. Results described a diversity of reactions and management of …

Two aspects of acid mine drainage (AMD) production were studied on a laboratory scale: the role of leaching, and the effectiveness of phosphate amelioration. The leaching study was based on an assumption of an earlier oxidation/leaching field model: that oxidation is independent of leaching. A SAS program was written which can simultaneously fit all three parameters of this field model. The model was generalized to include the effect of initial sulfate sulfur. A deterministic oxidation/leaching model was developed and applied to two continuous, unsaturated flow trickle bed reactors. First-order leaching rate constants were calculated to be 0.0888 days{dollar}\\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} for refuse …
