Protecting Workers From Unlawful Interference With Their Jobs, Allan Kanner

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

Varieties of aggressive and improper forms of economic activity have existed as threats to civil order since at least biblical times. From this historical perspective, the capacity of some individuals to generate the destructive impact of "merger mania" run amok hardly seems shocking. Yet there is something profoundly threatening to civil order whenever a cabal of conspirators can, in the name of greed or avarice alone, destroy the lives and jobs of tens of thousands of individuals. However, civil society rarely allows itself to fall prey to such misconduct for long. A fundamental tenet of social life is that one …

Wood, Bark, And Pith Anatomy Of Old World Species Of Ephedra And Summary For The Genus, Sherwin Carlquist Jan 1992

Wood, Bark, And Pith Anatomy Of Old World Species Of Ephedra And Summary For The Genus, Sherwin Carlquist

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Quantitative and qualitative data are presented for wood anatomy of 35 collections representing 22 Old World species of Ephedra; the survey of bark and pith anatomy is based on some of these species. Character-state ranges similar to those of the New World species are reported, although more numerous species show vessel absence in latewood. Little diminution in vessel diameter or density occurs in latewood of the eight species that are scandant or sprawling. Helical thickenings or sculpture occur in vessels of about a third of the Old World species, but these thickenings are clearly related to pits, often not …

Outcomes Assessment Research: Guidelines For Conducting Communication Alumni Surveys, Ben L. Parker, Susan J. Drummond-Reeves

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article outlines a practical framework for designing and executing alumni outcomes assessment surveys in university communication programs. It details preparatory steps including funding allocation, alumni definition, time zone coding, questionnaire construction, interviewer training, and calendar planning. Emphasis is placed on telephone surveys and computer assisted data entry to achieve efficient data collection, reduce errors, and support rapid analysis. The discussion integrates lessons from a Boise State University project, offering checklists for budgeting, sampling, and staffing that departments can adapt to local contexts. By linking outcomes assessment, alumni survey methodology, communication curriculum evaluation, accountability policy, institutional research, and program planning, …

Aca Convention Program: Ethics And Methods Of Employment References, James Thomas

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the legal and ethical complexities surrounding employment references in academic and corporate settings, emphasizing the heightened litigation risk faced by administrators. It explains how defamation claims and negligent hiring suits can arise both from disclosing unfavorable information and from withholding relevant facts, illustrating consequences with recent court decisions. The concept of qualified privilege is outlined as a conditional protection that permits truthful communication among employers while prohibiting malicious or excessive disclosure. Drawing on survey data and case law, the discussion identifies common institutional responses such as no comment policies and evaluates their adequacy. To mitigate legal exposure, …

Commentary: Self-Evident Truths For Departmental Governance, Marisue Pickering Jan 1992

Commentary: Self-Evident Truths For Departmental Governance, Marisue Pickering

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article distills self evident truths about departmental governance drawn from chair experience and peer narratives in communication programs. Framing the department as a unique cultural and social entity within the university, the discussion outlines recurring challenges in faculty relations, administrative negotiation, budgeting, and crisis management. It highlights how disciplinary world views shape interaction with deans, how external constituencies such as alumni and families influence policy, and how personal skills and values inform chair leadership. Four thematic areas structure the reflections: internal culture, external connections, personal competencies, and philosophical dimensions of change. Recommendations promote transparent communication, inclusive networking, data informed …

Using Student Ratings Of Faculty In The Instructional Development Process, Phil Backlund Jan 1992

Using Student Ratings Of Faculty In The Instructional Development Process, Phil Backlund

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Student ratings remain the most common yet least trusted feedback source for college teaching improvement and personnel decisions. This article reviews misconceptions about their reliability, validity, and relationship to factors such as course level, elective status, and grading patterns, drawing on decades of research to show that well designed instruments can yield consistent and informative results. It argues that ratings should function as one element within a broader instructional development model that also incorporates self reflection, peer review, and administrative data. Guidelines are offered for selecting appropriate forms, standardizing administration procedures, and summarizing data to support both diagnostic feedback and …

"Vaine Opinions, Flattering Hopes, False Valuations": Some Problems In Faculty Evaluation And Recruiting, Peter Garvie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Drawing on historical anecdotes, this essay critiques the bureaucratization of faculty evaluation and recruiting in U.S. universities. Using the 1768 appointment of poet Thomas Gray as a starting point, it traces how informal, patronage-based hires evolved into multi-layered procedures that create an ‘absurd’ faith in objectivity. Four fallacies are identified: the illusion of abundant objective evidence, the belief that numerical scoring enhances accuracy, the assumption that codified detail guarantees wiser judgments, and the conviction that involving more reviewers ensures better decisions. Through examples of distorted reference letters, anonymous allegations, and tenure cases deferred until the final year, the analysis shows …
