On A Single-Server Queue With Fixed Accumulation Level, State Dependent Service, And Semi-Markov Modulated Input Flow, Gary Russell, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow Jan 1992

On A Single-Server Queue With Fixed Accumulation Level, State Dependent Service, And Semi-Markov Modulated Input Flow, Gary Russell, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

The authors study the queueing process in a single-server queueing system with state dependent service and with the input modulated by a semi-Markov process embedded in the queueing process. It is also assumed that the server capacity is r≥1 and that any service act will not begin until the queue accumulates at least r units. In this model, therefore, idle periods also depend upon the queue length. The authors establish an ergodicity criterion for the queueing process and evaluate explicitly its stationary distribution and other characteristics of the system, such as the mean service cycle, intensity of the system, intensity …

Making-One With God: At-One-Ment In The Theology Of William Porcher Dubose, Robert B. Slocum

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This article concludes a series on theology of William Porcher DuBose which was begun in the December 1990 issue of the St. Luke’s Journal of Theology and continued in the June 1991 issue. DuBose (1836-918) was the second dean of the School of Theology at Sewanee (1894-1908) and a leading Episcopal theologian. This article discusses the convergence of his theological themes in atonement.

A First Passage Problem And Its Applications To The Analysis Of A Class Of Stochastic Models, Lev M. Abolnikov, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow Jan 1992

A First Passage Problem And Its Applications To The Analysis Of A Class Of Stochastic Models, Lev M. Abolnikov, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

A problem of the first passage of a cumulative random process with generally distributed discrete or continuous increments over a fixed level is considered in the article as an essential part of the analysis of a class of stochastic models (bulk queueing systems, inventory control and dam models). Using direct probability methods the authors find various characteristics of this problem: the magnitude of the first excess of the process over a fixed level, the shortage before the first excess, the levels of the first and pre-first excesses, the index of the first excess and others. The results obtained are illustrated …

Generalized Two Point Boundary Value Problems. Existence And Uniqueness, K. N. Murty, Seenith Sivasundaram Jan 1992

Generalized Two Point Boundary Value Problems. Existence And Uniqueness, K. N. Murty, Seenith Sivasundaram

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

An algorithm is presented for finding the pseudo-inverse of a rectangular matrix. Using this algorithm as a tool, existence and uniqueness of solutions to two point boundary value problems associated with general first order matrix differential equations are established.

The Effect Of A Weight Training Program On The Happiness Of Young Women, Natalie Dowty Jan 1992

The Effect Of A Weight Training Program On The Happiness Of Young Women, Natalie Dowty

Student Work

An increasing body of research indicates that exercise has some positive psychological effects. But few studies focus specifically on weight training as the treatment, or happiness as the dependent variable. Additionally, much research has focused on psychological state changes from immediately before, to immediately following a physical activity. Little has been reported on the relationship between weight training and general happiness over a longer period of time, (i.e. three to four months). The purpose of this study was: (a) to determine the effect of beginning and maintaining a regular weight training program on the happiness of previously sedentary women, (b) …

United States Customs Law Affecting The Movement Of Goods Into And Out Of Mexico., Robert T. Givens, Rayburn Berry Jan 1992

United States Customs Law Affecting The Movement Of Goods Into And Out Of Mexico., Robert T. Givens, Rayburn Berry

St. Mary's Law Journal

Trade between the United State and Mexico rose dramatically over the past decade. Several factors account for this increase in trade. These factors include the relative weakness of the Mexican currency, growth of the maquiladora industry, and increased Mexican production of exportable products generally. Other factors include Mexico’s 1986 accession to General Agreements Tariff and Trade (GATT), the resultant lowering of Mexican customs duties, and a good long-term working relationship between the two countries. If ongoing negotiations culminate in a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) the trend will accelerate.

The Case For A Texas Compulsory Unitization Statute., Paula C. Murray, Frank B. Cross Jan 1992

The Case For A Texas Compulsory Unitization Statute., Paula C. Murray, Frank B. Cross

St. Mary's Law Journal

Compulsory unitization of oil and natural gas reservoirs would substantially enhance the welfare of the United States and of Texas in particular. The present regulated free market for oil production produces both inefficiencies and inequities. Consequentially, oil exploration is discouraged, oil production is unnecessarily costly and wasteful, and the private distribution of oil revenues can be arbitrarily unfair. Compulsory unitization would remedy many of these shortcomings which result from extant structures. Unitization means the cooperative development of an entire reservoir of oil or gas. Compulsory unitization in most states also contains a variety of substantive and procedural prerequisites to unitization …

The Socialist Legacy Of Jean Jaures And Leon Blum, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr Jan 1992

The Socialist Legacy Of Jean Jaures And Leon Blum, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

The tradition of socialist theory and practice associated with the Frenchmen Jean Jaures and Leon Blum is virtually unheard of in the Philippines. In a way, this is not surprising in a polity where ideological distinctions are not fully understood and appreciated, and where "socialism" is often equated with the "communism" espoused by the underground Communist Party of the Philippines and its allies. But such a gap in knowledge, while understandable, is most unfortunate. The aim of this note is to help fill this intellectual void in Philippine political-economic literature. The note also intends to show that this particular French …

Relationships, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez Jan 1992

Relationships, Maribal Rodriquez-Lopez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This work is divided into five sections, the first being the Introduction. In Section II, shame, perpetrators, bystanders, victims and survivors are defined at length. Chapter 1, entitled, Shame Defined, differentiates between embarrassment, guilt and shame. In Healing the Shame that Binds You, John Bradshaw (1988) describes shame: It is like internal bleeding. Exposure to oneself lies at the heart of toxic shame. A shame-based person will guard against exposing his inner self to others, but more significantly, he will guard against exposing himself to himself. Toxic shame is so excruciating because it is the painful exposure of the believed …

The Swiss Colony Of New Glarus: A Study Of A Successful Ethnic Settlement, Jessica T. Skropanic Jan 1992

The Swiss Colony Of New Glarus: A Study Of A Successful Ethnic Settlement, Jessica T. Skropanic

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis is a cultural study of the history, community, and ethnic identity of the village New Glarus in southern Wisconsin. It discusses the use of culture to promote tourism, an approach which allows the town to survive economically when so many farming and dairy communities are dying out. It examines how the participation in tourism has created solidarity and cultural pride amongst the people of the town. My objective is to document and analyze the creation and development of this community and to establish the variables that have enabled New Glarus to remain a relatively homogeneous ethnic community for …

A Review Of Taiwan’S Fair Trade Law Draft By Referring To The U.S. Antitrust Laws, Min-Huang Su Jan 1992

A Review Of Taiwan’S Fair Trade Law Draft By Referring To The U.S. Antitrust Laws, Min-Huang Su

LLM Theses and Essays

Due to the rapid industrialization and commercialization of Taiwan’s economy, many of Taiwan’s old laws regulating economic activity have been rendered obsolete. The lack of proper regulation of modern economic activities has led to the formation of many monopolies and oligopolies in Taiwan which practice price-fixing and output restrictions. The Taiwanese government has responded to this problem with a new antitrust statute, known as the Fair Trade Law (FTL), and a draft FTL was formally adopted in 1986. The strengths and weaknesses of the draft FTL are analyzed with regards to monopolies and oligopolies, mergers and combinations, and concerted actions. …
