An Investigation Of Bacterial Transformation Techniques, Kimberly M. Moldovan Jan 1992

An Investigation Of Bacterial Transformation Techniques, Kimberly M. Moldovan

Honors Capstones

This thesis contain information regarding two possible, means of causing B. megaterium to take into , its, own genome # exogenous DNA. The whole goal of the transformation process, be it via electroporation or protoplast transformation, is to get the cell to not; only accept the foreign DNA, but to express the proteins the exogenous genes code for. The electroporation process consists of subjecting the bacterial cells to various strengths, of electric shock in order to cause pore formation in the celL-wall and subsequent entrance of the exogenous _DNA of interest. The disruption of the cell wall must not be …

Current Trends In Breast Feeding Promotion In Businesses, Linda Eugene Jan 1992

Current Trends In Breast Feeding Promotion In Businesses, Linda Eugene

Honors Capstones

Mothers who breast feed their children face a difficult decision when the time comes to return to work. Unfortunately, many women cease breast feeding and turn to bottle feeding as an alternative because their employer is unable or unwilling to compromise with them to allow breast feeding to continue. The attitude of businesses, which is predominantly negative against breast feeding in the workplace, is unfortunate due to the many positive effects breast feeding provides to mother and child. The purpose of this study is to find out exactly what businesses are or are not doing for their female employees regarding …

Profitability Of Installment Loans For Banks, Kelly L. Ludeman Jan 1992

Profitability Of Installment Loans For Banks, Kelly L. Ludeman

Honors Capstones

For my capstone project, I have studied the profitability of installment loans for banks. To begin my paper, I start with the history of consumer credit: how it began, what it is now, and the legislation that rules it. I then go on to explain the different types of loans that are regulated by the legislation. These different types of loans are then broken down into two subtypes that are the focus of the paper -- direct and indirect loans. These loans are explained from the overall banking perspective. Next, I apply the information given in the start of the …

Recognition Of Asset Impairment: A Comparison Of Recognition Criteria, Tracey D. Leedy Jan 1992

Recognition Of Asset Impairment: A Comparison Of Recognition Criteria, Tracey D. Leedy

Honors Capstones

This report examines the accounting for the impairment of long-lived assets and identifiable intangibles as discussed in the Financial Accounting Standards Board Discussion Memorandum No. 098-B. This report specifically analyzes the recognition criteria to be used in determining when an impairment exists. The economic, permanence, and probability criterion are compared and contrasted to ascertain which method is the most feasible. The relevant information for this study ~came from the discussion memorandum, Big Six accounting firms, published literature, and a national student seminar on the topic. The study revealed a great deal of ambiguity in accounting for assets whose value has …

The Role Of Scope And Scale Economies In Recent Large Bank Mergers, Daniel Eichelberger Jan 1992

The Role Of Scope And Scale Economies In Recent Large Bank Mergers, Daniel Eichelberger

Honors Capstones

The recent mega-merger activity in the u.s. banking industry raises many issues. Most important is the question of whether these mergers result in more profitable banks. A review of the literature on cost savings due to economies of scope and scale suggests that only those savings from the diversification of risk are present. The savings due to this diversification are substantial, but we also need to look at other areas of cost savings. Theories such as the information hypothesis, the market-power hypothesis, the inefficient-management hypothesis, and the too big to fail theory lead us to believe that the merging of …

Ethnic Conflict Between The Siamese And The Mon, Hmong And Malay-Muslims Of Thailand : A Comparison Of Religion, Language And Ethnic Rank, Heather M. Fischer Jan 1992

Ethnic Conflict Between The Siamese And The Mon, Hmong And Malay-Muslims Of Thailand : A Comparison Of Religion, Language And Ethnic Rank, Heather M. Fischer

Honors Capstones

In my paper I discuss the ethnic conflict among the Siamese majority and the minority. Due to the amount of ethnic diversity I limited my research to three groups: The Mon, Hmong and the Malays of Southern Thailand. Within these groups my parameters were religion, language and ethnic rank. These groups also illustrate various degrees of ethnic conflict. I comment that religion and the use of Thai language is very important in being Thai by Thai standards. Ethnic rank also relates to the awareness of being Thai. Because of the lack of information of these subjects, I comment that more …

The Abc's Of The Real Business Cycle, Timothy Matthew Hanson Jan 1992

The Abc's Of The Real Business Cycle, Timothy Matthew Hanson

Honors Capstones

The real business cycle approach to business cycle theory is viable and worthy of extended research. However, it does not resolve the dilemma facing business cycle theorists in coming up with one true explanation of the cycle. Throughout my research paper, I have clearly defined its shortcomings in terms of the non-recognition of money and a refusal to incorporate aggregate demand into the model. As a new theory, my purpose was to gain an enlightened view of what many feel is a revolutionary new way of business cycle thinking. I started with an explanation of what the theory holds as …

The Death Of Standard Costing, Kristin L. Wagner Jan 1992

The Death Of Standard Costing, Kristin L. Wagner

Honors Capstones

Standard costing systems are no longer adequate or effective costing systems for U.S. companies employing statistical process control, total quality control, and just-in-time inventory systems. The four purposes for which standard costing systems are used have been identified by Charles T. Horngren as follows: 1. Financial statement preparation . 2. Cost management 3. Price-making and price policy 4. Budgetary planning and control The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the inadequacies of standard costing systems for use in the above purposes. Although several alternatives to standard costing systems are proposed, it is beyond the scope of this paper to …

The Effect Of Phospholipase On Membrane Transport, Robert Thumme Jan 1992

The Effect Of Phospholipase On Membrane Transport, Robert Thumme

Honors Capstones

This project studied the effect of membrane lipid metabolism on electrolyte transport in rat pancreatic secretory vesicles. The influence of phospholipase A2 and fatty acids on Cl" transport was characterized by the technique of ionophore-induced lysis in a defined salt solution. The data reveals a 12-fold increase in Cl” transport in response to phospholipase A2 treatment of the membranes. This suggests that granule membrane bound phospholipase A2 may regulate aspects of exocytosis during stimulus-secretion coupling. In addition, the effect of fatty acid incorporation into the vesicle membrane was determined. Direct correlations were identified between increasing fatty acid chain length and …

How To Stay Competitive As A Professional : The Function Of Sales And Marketing In Public Accounting, Erik D. Jones

Honors Capstones

Professionals in public accounting must meet two objectives: maintain a professional image and stay competitive within their industry. Unfortunately, sometimes these two objectives appear to work against each other. As professionals, some accountants feel that aggressive marketing techniques are not conducive to the image they are trying to uphold. However, it is possible for professionals to be aggressive and still maintain their status within the business community. The purpose of this thesis is to present methods and techniques that accounting professionals use to effectively market their services. The scope of my research was limited to articles found in professional journals …

Characterization Of Secretory Membranes And Exocytotic Fusion, Gary Kaufman Jan 1992

Characterization Of Secretory Membranes And Exocytotic Fusion, Gary Kaufman

Honors Capstones

Rat pancreatic zymogen granules were studied to assess their role in exocytotic fusion. The granules were isolated by nitrogen cavitation and Percoll density gradient centrifugation. Apical membranes were isolated from the homogenate by a step- gradient and differential centrifugation. Both samples were then checked for purity via marker enzyme assays. Integral proteins were extracted with Triton-X114. Both membrane proteins and isolated integral membrane proteins were characterized by SDS gel electrophoresis. The results showed six candidate fusion proteins of molecular weight 64.1, 61.7, 56.8, 43.1, 42.1, and 14.8 kDal based on their relative hydrophobicity. Membrane fusogenicity was assessed by monitoring the …

Examining Didonato'S Damage Limitations And Mandatory Joinder Requirements - Greer V. Parsons, John M. Mccabe

Campbell Law Review

This Note will outline the evolution of wrongful death actions, with particular attention being given to the inclusion of unborn children under the providing statutes. It also traces North Carolina's legislative and judicial treatment of wrongful death actions. Next, the Note will discuss the inconsistencies created by ruling that pecuniary loss and loss of society and companionship cannot be recovered as a matter of law in a wrongful death action brought on behalf of viable fetus. It will argue that instead ,of limiting recovery as a matter of law, such damages should be addressed on a case-by-case basis and the …

Beer Drinking Smokers And Granola Crunchers: The Challenge Of Physically And Socially Accommodating Incompatible Winter Resort Market Segments, Russell E. Brayley

Visions in Leisure and Business

Earlier research which focuses on conflicts between participants in different kinds of recreational activity has demonstrated that the most intense forms of physical and social incompatibility exist between mechanized and non-mechanized recreationists. The purpose of this research effort was to describe and compare groups of individuals who are likely to stay at a resort primarily for the purpose of engaging in snowmobiling or cross-country skiing activities. Social incompatibility was clearly evident in the resort setting. Both snowmobilers and cross-country skiers believe that their outdoor space requirements can be accommodated in an integrated resort setting if proper design and management decisions …

Crisis Management In Tourist Destinations, Sevil F. Sonmez, Sheila J. Backman

Visions in Leisure and Business

Whether natural or caused by people, disasters have been and continue to be a part of life that communities must deal with. Tourism destinations are especially vulnerable to disaster occurrences due to their economic dependence on visitors and the need to maintain a positive image of attractiveness and safety for continued success. The past decade has witnessed numerous natural disasters in tourist destinations around the world; therefore, community leaders, local governments, and major industries need to be prepared for the worst.
