"He's Long Gone": The Theme Of Escape In Black Folklore And Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 1992

"He's Long Gone": The Theme Of Escape In Black Folklore And Literature, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

Throughout their experiences in this country, certain segments of the Black population have viewed themselves as enslaved, whether they were chattel owned by slaveowners prior to emancipation, whether they were impressed into peonage and forced to work on white plantations and in chain gangs after slavery, whether they were victims of sharecropping systems that virtually reenslaved them during the twentieth century, whether they were the repressed and disfranchised and persecuted in Southern Jim Crow towns throughout the first half of the twentieth century, whether they are those trapped by unemployment and poverty today, or whether they are among the Blacks …

The Success Of Native American Students At Bennett County High School And Parent Involvement, Janet F. Varejcka Jan 1992

The Success Of Native American Students At Bennett County High School And Parent Involvement, Janet F. Varejcka

Student Work

The history of Native Americans has been checkered. No more so than in the history of their plight for quality education. The concept of racial inferiority was an excuse to push Indians from land they had always occupied. Native American men, women, and children were treated like animals.

Laser-Produced Plasmas For Soft-X-Ray Projection Lithography, W. T. Silfvast, M. C. Richardson, H. Bender, A. Hanzo, V. Yanovsky, F. Jin, J. Thorpe Jan 1992

Laser-Produced Plasmas For Soft-X-Ray Projection Lithography, W. T. Silfvast, M. C. Richardson, H. Bender, A. Hanzo, V. Yanovsky, F. Jin, J. Thorpe

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Laser-produced plasmas are one of the most likely sources to be used for soft x-ray projection lithography. The characteristics of these sources are described in terms of the expected radiation efficiency within the illumination bandwidth of a lithographic system. Measurements of the plasma particulate emission are described and techniques for interdicting this emission before it reaches the illumination optics are discussed. The laser requirements are obtained for a lithographic system producing a wafer rate of 60, 6 in. wafers per hour.

Scaling Behavior Of The Ising-Model Coupled To 2-Dimensional Quantum-Gravity, Simon M. Catterall, John B. Kogut, Ray L. Renken Jan 1992

Scaling Behavior Of The Ising-Model Coupled To 2-Dimensional Quantum-Gravity, Simon M. Catterall, John B. Kogut, Ray L. Renken

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We study the Ising model on dynamical phi(3) graphs with spherical topology. A finite-size scaling analysis is carried out both with and without an external field leading to numerical estimates for various critical exponents which are in good agreement with analytical calculations. We further determine the equation of state, and measure the correlation of Ising spins on the ensemble of graphs.

The Harmonic Lattice, Recoilless Transitions, And The Coherent State, David S. Bateman, Subir K. Bose, Binayak Dutta-Roy, Manoranjan Bhattacharyya Jan 1992

The Harmonic Lattice, Recoilless Transitions, And The Coherent State, David S. Bateman, Subir K. Bose, Binayak Dutta-Roy, Manoranjan Bhattacharyya

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The probability for recoilless transitions, relevant for the understanding of x-ray scattering from atoms bound in a crystal (applicable also to elastic scattering of neutrons from solids and to the Mossbauer effect), given by the Debye-Waller factor, is derived in a novel manner using the coherent state basis for the normal mode oscillators describing the harmonic lattice, a method which, while being simple and elegant, also reveals the relationship to a heuristic classical discussion of the problem.

The Mapping Of The Coulomb Problem Into The Oscillator, David S. Bateman, Clinton Boyd, Binayak Dutta-Roy Jan 1992

The Mapping Of The Coulomb Problem Into The Oscillator, David S. Bateman, Clinton Boyd, Binayak Dutta-Roy

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The mapping of the Schrodinger equation for the "hydrogen atom" in one, two, and three dimensions into that for the oscillator is reviewed, with the purpose of relating two of the most basic,'illustrative, and useful problems discussed in introductory quantum mechanics courses.

Simultaneous Measurement Of Electron And Hole Escape Times From Biased Single Quantum-Wells, J. A. Cavaillès, D. A. B. Miller, J. E. Cunningham, P. Li Kam Wa, A. Miller Jan 1992

Simultaneous Measurement Of Electron And Hole Escape Times From Biased Single Quantum-Wells, J. A. Cavaillès, D. A. B. Miller, J. E. Cunningham, P. Li Kam Wa, A. Miller

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Picosecond pump probe measurements on waveguides containing a single GaAs/GaAlAs quantum well have enabled us to determine for the first time both electron and hole escape times from biased quantum wells. Contributions from excitonic saturation and field screening by photogenerated carriers can be clearly identified in the nonlinear transition signal and are quantitatively modeled. Preliminary analysis suggests that thermally assisted escape is dominant at room temperature, but discrepancies are found with conventional thermionic emission models.

Pressure-Dependence Of The Hyperfine Field Of A Cd Probe In A Relaxed Trivacancy Complex In Ni, Lee Chow, Xin Zhao, Gary S. Collins Jan 1992

Pressure-Dependence Of The Hyperfine Field Of A Cd Probe In A Relaxed Trivacancy Complex In Ni, Lee Chow, Xin Zhao, Gary S. Collins

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Perturbed gamma-gamma-angular-correlation experiments were carried out using extremely dilute Cd-111 probes to measure the pressure dependence of the magnetic hyperfine field at a vacancy-solute complex in Ni in which the Cd probe is relaxed to the center of a tetrahedron of vacancies. The pressure dependence of the hyperfine field of the defect-free substitutional site was found to be dH(hf)/dp = -0.038(6) kG/kbar, which agrees with a previous measurement. The pressure dependence of the hyperfine field associated with the vacancy complex was found to be dH(hf)/dp = -0.023(4) kG/kbar. Results are not found to be consistent with a simple picture of …

Hyperspherical Formulation Of Impurity-Bound Excitons In Semiconductors, J. J. De Groote, J. E. Hornos, H. T. Coelho, C. D. Caldwell Jan 1992

Hyperspherical Formulation Of Impurity-Bound Excitons In Semiconductors, J. J. De Groote, J. E. Hornos, H. T. Coelho, C. D. Caldwell

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

A hyperspherical formalism is shown to be an appropriate approach for the investigation of the three-particle complex corresponding to an exciton bound to a Coulomb center in a semiconductor. The ground- and excited-state potential curves and binding energies are calculated as a function of the mass ratio of the hole and electron, and the concept of a critical mass is discussed. The results that we have obtained are in very good agreement with variational calculations for several semiconductor materials.

Laser Performance Of Cr4+-Y2sio5, C. Deka, B. H. T. Chai, Y. Shimony, X. X. Zhang, E. Munin, M. Bass

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Laser action in Cr4+ doped yttrium-orthosilicate Cr4+:Y2SiO5 cooled to 77 K was demonstrated for the first time with 1064 and 532 nm pumping from a pulsed Nd:YAG laser and broad band (@ 840 nm) pumping from a Q-switched Cr:LiSAF laser.

Deviations From Perfect Integer Quantum Hall-Effect, O. Heinonen Jan 1992

Deviations From Perfect Integer Quantum Hall-Effect, O. Heinonen

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Deviations from perfect quantization of the Hall resistivity rho(yx) at integer filling factors have recently been observed in Si metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors. We demonstrate how scattering between degenerate states at the edges in a quantum Hall system can lead to size-dependent deviations in rho(yx) from its quantized values. While the Hall resistivity fluctuates, the current flows without dissipation along the channel due to the absence of backscattering.
