OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers
This study had three general research objectives: 1) to determine what information is currently provided the students through the existing efforts of admissions, program orientations, career search offices and current career development classes; 2) to determine the most valuable information for career planning to be included in an intensive unit of study; 3) to structure a unit of study to include the determined content for a currently existing Career Management course which would effect an increased satisfaction perception by the students.

Hierarchical Neurocontroller Architecture For Robotic Manipulation, Xavier J. R. Avula, Luis C. Rabelo
Hierarchical Neurocontroller Architecture For Robotic Manipulation, Xavier J. R. Avula, Luis C. Rabelo
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A hierarchical neurocontroller architecture consisting of two artificial neural network systems for the manipulation of a robotic arm is presented. The higher-level network system participates in the delineation of the robot arm workspace and coordinates transformation and the motion decision-making process. The lower-level network provides the correct sequence of control actions. A straightforward example illustrates the architecture''s capabilities, including speed, adaptability, and computational efficiency

Planning And Control Of A Robotic Manipulator Using Neural Networks, Xavier J. R. Avula, Heng Ma, Anil Malkani, Jay-Shinn Tsai, Luis C. Rabelo
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An architecture which utilizes two artificial neural systems for planning and control of a robotic arm is presented. The first neural network system participates in the trajectory planning and the motion decision-making process. The second neural network system provides the correct sequence of control actions with a high accuracy due to the utilization of an unsupervised/supervised neural network scheme. The utilization of a hybrid hierarchical/distributed organization, supervised/unsupervised learning models, and forward modeling yielded an architecture with capabilities of high level functionality.

Guidelines And Sample Protocol For Sampling Forest Gaps, James R. Runkle
Long Term Ecological Research Network
Comparative studies of forest structure and dynamics require standardized methods. A protocol for sampling forest canopy gaps is presented. Methods used In published gap studies are reviewed. The sample protocol will be useful In developing a broader understanding of forest structure and dynamics through comparative studies across different forest ecosystems.

Effect Of Sinkholes On Soil Moisture And Ground Water Recharge At An Abandoned Underground Coal Mine Near Wilton, North Dakota, Michael M. Sonderman
Effect Of Sinkholes On Soil Moisture And Ground Water Recharge At An Abandoned Underground Coal Mine Near Wilton, North Dakota, Michael M. Sonderman
Theses and Dissertations
Subsidence at abandoned underground mines in south-central and southwest North Dakota has produced numerous sinkholes. Previous studies in the Northern Great Plains have suggested depression-focused recharge may be a significant ground water recharge mechanism in this region. Thus, sinkholes may increase soil moisture and ground water recharge. Current reclamation practices include filling sinkholes with non-topsoil fill material. However, the benefits of increases in soil moisture and ground water supplies may outweigh the benefits of expensive reclamation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether soil moisture and, hence, the potential for ground water recharge, was greater in sinkholes than …
Many Voices, Similar Concerns: Traditional Methods Of African-American Political Activity In Norfolk, Virginia, 1865-1875, Michael Hucles
Many Voices, Similar Concerns: Traditional Methods Of African-American Political Activity In Norfolk, Virginia, 1865-1875, Michael Hucles
History Faculty Publications
African-Americans in postbellum Norfolk, Virginia, as elsewhere, knew that merely gaining freedom through government action--the Confiscation Acts, Emancipation Proclamation, and Thirteenth Amendment--did not guarantee that they would be fairly treated. They therefore attempted to gain control of their lives through a vigorous affirmation of their rights. They began to record their antebellum marriages and normalize family relations, obtain an education, establish a base for economic prosperity, and participate in the political process. Through these actions they hoped to give true meaning to their freedom. Unfortunately, they were not always successful in their attempts.

Women In Leadership National Conference 1992: Women, Communication And Power, Margaret Butterworth (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
Victorian feminist lawyer and social activist, Dr. Jocelynne Scutt, confronted the issue of women and power by drawing upon a powerful reading of stories from women. These stories, drawn from ordinary and not so ordinary women, showed the barriers that face women as they attempt to deal with a daily reality infused with masculine power, violence, fright, shame, and self-realization. She spoke poignantly of a world that is all to familiar to women; women whose capacities have been curbed sharply by a common theme in their lives: domination and coercion...
