Calcium Ions Are Involved In Escherichia Coli Chemotaxis, Louis S. Tisa, Julius Adler

Escherichia coli regulates intracellular free Ca2+ at about 90 nM [Gangola, P. & Rosen, B. P. (1987) J. Biol. Chem. 262, 12570-12574]. To increase intracellular free Ca2+, nitr-5/Ca2+, a "caged" Ca2+ compound, was electroporated into cells and then its affinity for Ca2+ was reduced by exposure to 370-nm light. Upon release of the Ca2+ ions, the cells tumbled. Studies on mutant strains showed that the receptor proteins (methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins, MCPs) were not required for the Ca(2+)-induced tumbling but that CheA, CheW, and CheY proteins were required. Similar results were obtained with DM-nitrophen/Ca2+, another caged calcium compound that releases Ca2+ …

A harvester adapted for harvesting low-lying fruit, such as typical with high-density, dwarf trees, includes an intra-loop conveyor for collecting detached fruit relatively close to the ground and elevating same with a single flighted belt. The harvester straddles a single row of the trees and detaches the fruit therefrom by repeatedly impacting the tree canopies are the harvester moves along the row. Spring-loaded deflection plates close around the tree trunks and deflect detached fruit outwardly to interior surfaces of a pair of single-loop conveyors. Baffles cooperating with the interior of each conveyor restrains fruit therein as the conveyor passes overhead …

The ends of muscle fibers form many longitudinal projections which are further divided into numerous processes and attach to the collagen fibrils of tendons to form myotendinous junctions (MTJs). Immunocytochemical and electron microscopic observations on pectoralis muscles of the chicken revealed the presence of an elastic filamentous protein, connectin (titin), within the terminal sarcomere on the side adjacent to the terminal Z bands, and the absence of connectin and myosin and the presence of actin at the apical sarcoplasmic region of MTJ processes between the terminal Z band and the MTJ sarcolemma. The Nucleation And Growth Of Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate On Self-Assembled Monolayers (Sams), Allison A. Campbell, Glen E. Fryxell, Gordon L. Graff, Peter C. Rieke, Barbara J. Tarasevich

A physical chemical approach was used to study calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) nucleation and growth on various organic interfaces. Self-assembling monolayers (SAMs), containing derivatized organic functional groups, were designed to mimic various amino acid residues present in both urine and stone matrix macromolecules. Derivatized surfaces include SAMs with terminal methyl, bromo, imidazole, and thiazolidine-carboxylic acid functional groups. Pronounced differences in COM deposition were observed for the various interfaces with the imidazole and thiazolidine surfaces having the greatest effect and the methyl and bromo groups having little or no nucleating potential.

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
This research report is based on the results of a mail survey of randomly selected South Dakota beef cow-calf operators undertaken during late 1991. The purpose of the survey was to determine the nature of management practices followed by the state's cow-calf producers and whether those practices differ by size and/or location of herd. Attention was given to producers' overall cowcalf, breeding, feeding, and health management practices.
