Banking The Furnace: Restructuring Of The Steel Industry In Eight Countries, Trevor Bain Jan 1992

Banking The Furnace: Restructuring Of The Steel Industry In Eight Countries, Trevor Bain

Upjohn Press

Trevor Bain explores the industry restructurings that occurred in eight major steel-producing countries, including the U.S., Germany and Japan. He begins by categorizing each country as having either an adversarial or a cooperative industrial relations system, and then analyzes the differences in implementation strategies. He also determines who - employers, employees, or government - bore the cost of these adjustments and which industrial relations systems were more efficient in restructuring.

Intellectual Authority And Institutional Authority, Charles W. Collier Jan 1992

Intellectual Authority And Institutional Authority, Charles W. Collier

UF Law Faculty Publications

This is an essay about the power of ideas and the influence of institutions.

What Gibbon termed the pure. "force of persuasion," unaided and unhindered by institutional context, I refer to as "intellectual authority." This has been defined as "the authority exerted by arguments that make their way simply by virtue of a superior rationality and do not depend for their impact on the lines of power and influence operating in an institution." The contrastive notion of "institutional authority" refers to the nonintellectual influence exerted by social, political, cultural, historical, legal, literary, educational, religious, and other institutions. The nonintellectual influence …

Criminal Tax Fraud: An Analytical Review, Ray A. Knight, Lee G. Knight Jan 1992

Criminal Tax Fraud: An Analytical Review, Ray A. Knight, Lee G. Knight

Missouri Law Review

Today, there seems to be a lingering impression that tax-evasion is a type of technical crime for bringing to justice those gangsters and racketeers who might otherwise evade all punishment for their acts. Criminal tax enforcement includes a process which has long been characterized by prosecutions of highly visible individuals who have violated only the tax laws, as well as prosecutions for tax crimes of persons also engaged in nontax criminal activity. Indeed, the violation of criminal tax statutes has long been a natural and frequently inevitable handmaiden of the commission of many nontax crimes.

Receipt Of A Profits Interest In A Partnership As A Taxable Event After Campbell And Mark Iv, The, Mark Winfield Brennan Jan 1992

Receipt Of A Profits Interest In A Partnership As A Taxable Event After Campbell And Mark Iv, The, Mark Winfield Brennan

Missouri Law Review

For years tax advisors have assumed that the receipt of a profits interest in a partnership in return for services is not a taxable event; instead, the stream of income derived from the profits interest is taxable as received. The only authority to the contrary was considered an "aberration" and nearly completely disregarded A tax court memorandum decision, Campbell v. Commissioner, appeared to change the way in which tax advisors must approach the topic. Mark IV Productions, Inc. v. Commissioner, a memorandum decision handed down only seven months after Campbell, however, abruptly altered once again the tax court's position on …

Rambo I: The Missouri Supreme Court Vs. The Wrongful Death Statute--Prelude To The Sequel, Michael T. Kokal Jan 1992

Rambo I: The Missouri Supreme Court Vs. The Wrongful Death Statute--Prelude To The Sequel, Michael T. Kokal

Missouri Law Review

Rambo v. Lawson answered the question left open by O'Grady v. Brown. O'Grady determined that a wrongful death cause of action existed for the death of a viable fetus. The O'Grady court, however, did not decide the question of whether a wrongful death cause of action existed for the death of a non-viable fetus. First, Rambo refused to breathe substantive life into the Missouri anti-abortion statutes beyond the abortion context. Second, and perhaps even more interesting for the future of Missouri wrongful death law, was the concurring opinion in Rambo written by Judge Robertson. Judge Robertson's opinion is significant because …

First Report Of The Chinch Bug (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) Egg Parasitoid Eumicrosoma Beneficum Gahan (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) In Nebraska, Robert Wright, Stephen D. Danielson

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A scelionid wasp, Eumicrosoma beneficum Gahan, was reared from chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus (Say), eggs collected from wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) near Odell, Nebraska, in June 1989. Three-hundred twenty-one of 680 chinch bug eggs (47.2%) were parasitized by E. beneficum. Based on a subsample of 92 wasps the population was 64.1% female. This is the first report of this wasp from Nebraska.

The Metropolitan-Nonmetropolitan Turnaround In The Pacific States (California, Oregon, And Washington): Labor Migration Flows And Economic Deconcentration, Beverly Marie Mclean Jan 1992

The Metropolitan-Nonmetropolitan Turnaround In The Pacific States (California, Oregon, And Washington): Labor Migration Flows And Economic Deconcentration, Beverly Marie Mclean

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the turnaround of labor force migration patterns in the states of California, Oregon, and Washington in the 1970s. The focus of the dissertation is the simultaneous phenomena of economic deconcentration and employment migration in nonmetropolitan counties during the turnaround period. The theoretical approach of the research draws from the disciplines of economics, geography, and sociology to develop a model that addresses what attributes of areas attract labor migration flows. The study specifies that labor migration is a function of economic activities, the environment, and accessibility. The research focus is the role that economic and noneconomic factors play …

Remote Area Nursing In Western Australia: An Examination Of A Conceptual Model For Practice, Anne Magee Jan 1992

Remote Area Nursing In Western Australia: An Examination Of A Conceptual Model For Practice, Anne Magee

Theses : Honours

The intent of this research was to explore the phenomenon of remote area nursing in relation to a theoretical framework, the SUN Conceptual Model. A Theory-Research-Theory strategy was chosen in order to modify, refine or redevelop the model. Using a descriptive, interpretive design, a sample of eight Remote Area Nurses (RANs) in Western Australia were asked to describe their experiences of remote area nursing. The data were collected by telephone interview. Themes were extrapolated and categorised according to key concepts of the previously developed model. Common components of significant statements were identified in order to gain understanding of the meanings …

Farmer Groups - A Fad Or The Future, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Jan 1992

Farmer Groups - A Fad Or The Future, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

All other publications

The question I have asked is 'Are farmer groups a fad or the future?' I believe there is no question about it. Farmer groups ARE an important part of future agricultural extension. With shrinking government resources devoted to extension, a farmer group approach has many advantages. These advantages have been shown in Western Australia with landcare catchment groups and lice cell groups and these have been recognised by both extension workers and farmers. What makes these groups different to groups of the past? Farmer groups have come and gone in an almost cyclical fashion. An exception is the Kondinin Group, …
