School-Based Community Service: A Descriptive Analysis Of Four High School Programs., David Richard Procter Jan 1992

School-Based Community Service: A Descriptive Analysis Of Four High School Programs., David Richard Procter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study evaluated the panegyrical claims for high school-based community service programs. Four high school programs from three different states were selected to represent public, private-parochial, single and mixed gender, urban, suburban, and rural orientations. A repeated measure quantitative research design was developed and implemented as well as a qualitative study involving student and teacher/coordinator interviews. A survey instrument consisting of three scales--Social Isolation, Powerlessness, and Political Efficacy--was administered to experimental groups of student volunteers in each of four schools before and after programs involving student participation in community activities. The time periods between pre and post-tests ranged from one …

Role Of Estrogen And Boron In Calcium Metabolism And Eggshell Formation In The Chicken., Xuezhong Qin Jan 1992

Role Of Estrogen And Boron In Calcium Metabolism And Eggshell Formation In The Chicken., Xuezhong Qin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Ca supply for eggshell formation depends on the rate of calcium transport in both the intestine and shell gland. Although estrogen (E{dollar}\\sb2){dollar} is known to play an important role in the regulation of Ca transport in these tissues, the mechanism responsible for this effect has not been elucidated. Study 1, 2, and 3 were thus conducted to determine the role of E{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} in the regulation of Ca-ATPase and alkaline phosphatase (AP) in both the shell gland and intestine of immature chicks. In the shell gland, E{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} treatment increased the Vmax of Ca-ATPase without increasing the affinity of Ca-ATPase for …

The Effects Of Ericksonian Resource Retrieval On Musical Performance Anxiety., Joseph John Richard Jan 1992

The Effects Of Ericksonian Resource Retrieval On Musical Performance Anxiety., Joseph John Richard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The therapeutic approach Ericksonian Resource Retrieval (ERR) is compared to a proven technique for the reduction of musical performance anxiety (MPA) with college student musicians (n = 21) during the jury process. ERR is a technique which utilizes previous life experiences in dealing with future performance. Measures included: the Cognitive Strategies Assessment (CSA), the Personal Report of Confidence as a Performer (PRCP), the A-State Scale (STAI) and Jury Scores (JS). The ERR treatment group demonstrated significant reduction of MPA on both the PRCP and STAI. Also, a screening instrument for MPA (the MPSI) is developed (n = 104) which evidenced …

Development And Validation Of An Achievement Test Of Technological Literacy For Senior High School Students., Paulina Olufunmilayo Kuforiji Jan 1992

Development And Validation Of An Achievement Test Of Technological Literacy For Senior High School Students., Paulina Olufunmilayo Kuforiji

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Reformers are urging a need for technological literacy for all students. Education has been criticized for its failure to produce technologically literate graduates. To defuse such criticism and do a better job of preparing students for the future, more students should be encouraged to take technology education courses. The purpose of this study was to provide information to educators and the public about the level of knowledge and understanding of technology possessed by senior high school students. The problem of this study was to develop, validate and establish tentative norms for an achievement test that measures the technological literacy of …

Prediction And Amelioration Of Acid Mine Drainage., Walter Mark Hart Jan 1992

Prediction And Amelioration Of Acid Mine Drainage., Walter Mark Hart

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two aspects of acid mine drainage (AMD) production were studied on a laboratory scale: the role of leaching, and the effectiveness of phosphate amelioration. The leaching study was based on an assumption of an earlier oxidation/leaching field model: that oxidation is independent of leaching. A SAS program was written which can simultaneously fit all three parameters of this field model. The model was generalized to include the effect of initial sulfate sulfur. A deterministic oxidation/leaching model was developed and applied to two continuous, unsaturated flow trickle bed reactors. First-order leaching rate constants were calculated to be 0.0888 days{dollar}\\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} for refuse …

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang Jan 1992

Lesbian And Gay, Polly Thistlethwaite, Daniel C. Tsang

Publications and Research

"The lesbian and gay press has shaped and reflected the rise of gay and lesbian liberation," Dan Tsang and Polly Thistlethwaite wrote in the introduction to the 'Lesbian and Gay' section of Katzes' 1992 edition of Magazines for Libraries. This title review of the queer periodicals of the day was intended to serve as a guide and justification for 'mainstream' libraries' collection building. The number and range of titles in Thistlethwaite and Tsang's collaborative entries (1989, 1992, and 1995) far exceeded any mainstream library collection known to either of the authors who were nevertheless hopeful that libraries would expand …

Assessing Stress In Teachers: Depressive Symptoms Scales And Neutral Self-Reports Of The Work Environment, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 1992

Assessing Stress In Teachers: Depressive Symptoms Scales And Neutral Self-Reports Of The Work Environment, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

The focal interest of this chapter on teacher stress is methodologic. The chapter enumerates a number of defects in existing measures of job stress in teachers and, concomitantly, other helping professionals. Alternative ways of measuring stress in teachers are suggested and evaluated. The use of depressive symptom scales in concert with more 'objective' measures of the work environment is discussed. An application of the proposed alternative measurement strategy is described. The wider utility of the measurement strategy is briefly described.

International Student Design Competition Of Two Community Elementary Schoolyards, Roger Hart, Cindi Katz, Selim Iltus, Maria Rosario Mora

Publications and Research

As part of the project for the Participatory Design of Two Community Elementary Schoolyards in Harlem, P.S. 185 and P.S. 208 (The Schoolyards Project), the Children's Environments Research Group of the City University of New York held an International Student Design Competition for the design of these schoolyards. The competition drew sixty entries from various countries. The jury met on October 10, 1990 and awarded one First Prize and five Honorable Mentions. A landscape architect was then hired to utilize the best ideas, together with the architectural program which had been produced with the school and the surrounding community.
