Galactic Structure From Faint Stromgren Photometry: The Catalog Of Observations, Ted A. Von Hippel
Galactic Structure From Faint Stromgren Photometry: The Catalog Of Observations, Ted A. Von Hippel
Publications
We have initiated the faint photometric survey in the Stromgren system covering about 1 square degree and including 1238 objects in order to develop samples which best probe the thick disk population. The catalog of observations are presented here. They were acquired without kinematic or metallicity biases and are complete to V=17.3-18.5, depending on the field, for 810 early to relatively late type stars. Photometric metallicities were derived for 508 stars and indicate a metal-poor stellar population, consistent with a mixture of thick disk and halo stars. While the Stromgren u-band was not part of the survey, follow-up u-band observations …

The Programmers' Playground: I/O Abstraction For Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Kenneth J. Goldman, Michael D. Anderson
The Programmers' Playground: I/O Abstraction For Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Kenneth J. Goldman, Michael D. Anderson
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
A new high-level approach to interprocess communication in heterogeneous distributed systems in introduced, This approach, called I/O Abstraction, allows one to write each functional component of a distributed system as an encapsulated program that acts upon a set of local data structures, some of which may be published for external use. The functional components are separately configured by establishing logical connections among the published data structures. In order to illustrate this approach, we describe the The Programmers' Playground, a high-level language "veneer" and protocol designed to support I/O abstraction in heterogeneous computing environment. Support for communication among programs written in …

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks can support a wide variety of applications with varying data rates. Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) networks are targeted to support similar applications, but only in a LAN environment. Both of these networks are characterized by high data rates and low error rates. In addition, they can provide applications with varying degrees of performance guarantees. A problem of designing a high-performance gateway architecture for internetworking between these two important classes of networks was addressed in [Kapoor, 1991b]. An important part of the gateway design philosophy was to partition the internet functions into critical and non-critical …

The Supreme Court, Abortion, And The Jurisprudence Of Class, Wendy K. Mariner

The US Supreme Court's decision in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v Casey both protects a woman's liberty to choose to terminate her pregnancy and permits the state to make it more difficult for her to exercise her choice. In their opinion on the case, Justices O'Connor, Kennedy, and Souter eloquently defend constitutional protection of the right to make intimate decisions like continuing or ending a pregnancy. At the same time, they permit the state to try to persuade pregnant women not to have abortions and to make abortion harder to obtain and more costly, as long as the state's …

If you're an exporter, it pays to be a know-it-all these days.
Does there appear to be even a slight potential that the item you're shipping could play any part at all in modern weaponry? then you need to know exactly how that item will or may be used. You also may need to know who will ultimately use it, and where.
If you're a lawyer advising either that exporter or a supporting financial institution, you, too, now need an extra measure of vigilance. For one thing, it helps to know how to write loan documents with the necessary safeguards …

Employer Training Needs In Hawaii: Summary Report, Stephen A. Woodbury, University Of Hawaii At Manoa, Industrial Relations Center
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
The Survey of Employer Training Needs in Hawaii was undertaken to gather information and data on the needs and preferences of employers in Hawaii regarding government assistance with training. The need for such information was created by passage of Act 68, Session Laws of Hawaii 1991, which created the Hawaii Employment and Training Fund "to assist employers and workers through innovative programs to include, but not be limited to, business-specific training, upgrade training, new occupational skills, management skills, and support services to improve the long-term employability of Hawaii's people."

On Sport and Society
Two weeks ago "Red" Barber died in Tallahassee. Since 1981 Barber has been a familiar voice on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. Each Friday morning at 7:35 "Red" sitting in his home in Tallahassee had a warm and interesting conversation with Bob Edwards, the Colonel. He would talk about the sports of the week, his recollections of sports past, and very often the state of his garden and the foliage of Tallahassee.

Political Asylum In The Ninth Circuit And The Case Of Elias-Zacarias, Bruce J. Einhorn
Political Asylum In The Ninth Circuit And The Case Of Elias-Zacarias, Bruce J. Einhorn
San Diego Law Review
During the height of the Central American civil wars of the 1980s, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals established liberal precedent for granting asylum under the Immigration and Nationality Act to deportable aliens who had been threatened for resisting government or guerrilla service in their native countries because of their political opinions (including neutrality), whether expressed, implied, or imputed to them by those who meant them harm. However, in INS v. Elias-Zacarias, the Supreme Court reversed the Ninth Circuit and stated that an asylum applicant's political opinion may not be imputed to him by the actions of his alleged persecutors. …
