Measuring Asset Values For Cash Settlement In Derivative Markets: Hedonic Repeated Measures Indices And Perpetual Futures, Robert J. Shiller Nov 1992

Measuring Asset Values For Cash Settlement In Derivative Markets: Hedonic Repeated Measures Indices And Perpetual Futures, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Two proposals are made that may facilitate the creation of derivative market instruments, such as futures contracts, cash-settled based on economic indices. The first proposal concerns index number construction: indices based on infrequent measurements of nonstandardized items may control for quality change by using a hedonic repeated measures method, an index number construction method that follows individual assets or subjects through time and also takes account of measured quality variables. The second proposal is to establish markets for perpetual claims on cash flows matching indices of dividends or rents. Such markets may help us to measure the prices of the …

Some Dynamics Of A Strategic Market Game With A Large Number Of Agents, John M. Miller, Martin Shubik Nov 1992

Some Dynamics Of A Strategic Market Game With A Large Number Of Agents, John M. Miller, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper is designed to combine the game theoretic investigation of the static or equilibrium properties of large strategic market games together with the investigation of some very simple dynamics, which nevertheless are sufficient to show differences between two related games, one in which both borrowing and trade take place. The role of banking reserves emerges as relevant and sensitive to the transient state dynamics. Several 100,000 player games are simulated and the behavior is constructed with the analytical prediction for the games with a continuum of agents.

Some Exact Distribution Theory For Maximum Likelihood Estimators Of Cointegrating Coefficients In Error Correction Models, Peter C.B. Phillips Nov 1992

Some Exact Distribution Theory For Maximum Likelihood Estimators Of Cointegrating Coefficients In Error Correction Models, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper derives some exact finite sample distributions and characterizes the tail behavior of maximum likelihood estimators of the cointegrating coefficients in error correction models. It is shown that the reduced rank regression estimator has a distribution with Cauchy-like tails and no finite moments of integer order. The maximum likelihood estimator of the coefficients in a particular triangular system representation is studied and shown to have matrix t -distribution tails with finite integer moments to order T - n + r where T is the sample size, n is the total number of variables in the system and r is …

John Sutcliffe: A Brief Biography, Barry Taylor Nov 1992

John Sutcliffe: A Brief Biography, Barry Taylor

Savannah Biographies

Much of the life of John Sutcliffe continues to remain a mystery. Except for a relatively brief span of time covering the late eighteenth Century remains regarding the time he spent in Savannah and what he did while he resided here. The lack of physical evidence such death records, obituaries, and estate records, in conjunction with a personal ad and an "article" in area newspapers in the late 1780's perhaps indicates his departure from the area around the turn of the century.

Low Pressure Center Pivot And Soil Management Effects On Runoff, L. N. Mielke, J. R. Gilley, Wallace Wilhelm Nov 1992

Low Pressure Center Pivot And Soil Management Effects On Runoff, L. N. Mielke, J. R. Gilley, Wallace Wilhelm

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The objective of this research was to determine the influence center-pivot sprinkler irrigation methods in combination with tillage practices for corn (Zea mays L.) have on surface runoff of irrigation and rainfall. A center pivot irrigation machine was redesigned to apply water by high-pressure-impact (HPI), low-pressure-impact (LPI), and low-pressure-spray (LPS) nozzles. The center-pivot was a standard 10-tower machine, 395 meters in length and 38.4 meters tower spacing. Three tillage systems were used -- till-plant (T), disk (D), and subtill (S) which was till-plant with subsoiling between rows with straight single shanks, 360 mm deep, after last cultivation. The soil …

Correlates To Performance On Field Tests Of Muscular Strength, Jeffrey A. Woods, Russell R. Pate, Maria L. Burgess Nov 1992

Correlates To Performance On Field Tests Of Muscular Strength, Jeffrey A. Woods, Russell R. Pate, Maria L. Burgess

Faculty Publications

Field tests of upper body muscular strength and endurance (UBMSE) are often administered to children, but little is known about the determinants of performance on these tests. Therefore the purpose of this investigation was to examine potential determinants of performance on several common field tests of UBMSE including pull-ups, flexed-arm hang, push-ups, and two types of modified pull-ups. Subjects were 56 girls, and 38 boys, ages 9 to 11 years. Potential determinants assessed were age, height, weight, gender, % fat, physical activity, and laboratory measures of muscular strength and endurance. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the laboratory measures of UBMSE …

Conditional Spending And The First Amendment: Maintaining The Commitment To Rational Liberal Dialogue, Donald L. Beschle Nov 1992

Conditional Spending And The First Amendment: Maintaining The Commitment To Rational Liberal Dialogue, Donald L. Beschle

Missouri Law Review

Questions concerning the constitutional validity of conditions placed on recipients of government funds have a long history,' but they recently have received greater attention as the types of constitutional concerns have changed. Earlier cases dealt with issues of federalism, and claims that conditions unduly limited states in the exercise of their reserved powers. As courts moved to a generally consistent position of deference to Congressional choices concerning the proper distribution of power between the states and the national government, challenges to conditional spending faded in both their significance and interest.' This Article maintains that the government must take and express …

A Technique For The Evaluation Of Double Excitation Of Atoms By Fast Protons And Antiprotons, Jack C. Straton, James H. Mcguire, Zheng Chen Nov 1992

A Technique For The Evaluation Of Double Excitation Of Atoms By Fast Protons And Antiprotons, Jack C. Straton, James H. Mcguire, Zheng Chen

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A technique for evaluating cross sections for two-electron excitation in collisions of atoms with fast particles of charge ZP is presented. The atomic wave function is approximated by a sum of pair products of one-electron wave functions, with the coefficients chosen by diagonalizing the fully correlated twoelectron Hamiltonian. Thus spatial correlation is included in both the asymptotic and scattering regions by using these configuration-interaction (Cl) wave functions for initial, intermediate, and final states. Use of CI wave function also allows the first-order contributions to be expressed in closed, analytical form. Both the energy-conserving and energy-nonconserving parts of the second-order amplitude …

Unobserved Ability, Efficiency Wages, And Interindustry Wage Differentials, Mckinley L. Blackburn, David Neumark Nov 1992

Unobserved Ability, Efficiency Wages, And Interindustry Wage Differentials, Mckinley L. Blackburn, David Neumark

Faculty Publications

One competitive-market explanation of interindustry wage differentials that is not challenged by the persistence of these differentials is that they are due to differences across workers in unobserved ability or quality. In contrast, this paper explores the unobserved ability hypothesis by using test scores as error-ridden indicators of ability, and family background variables as instruments. This approach avoids two potential problems with using first-difference methods to remove omitted-ability bias from wage equation estimates of industry effects the exacerbation of measurement error from misclassification of industry, and selectivity with respect to industry changes. However, this approach may introduce other problems, for two …

Heterochromatin Protein 1, A Known Suppressor Of Position-Effect Variegation, Is Highly Conserved In Drosophila, Robert F. Clark, Sarah C.R. Elgin Nov 1992

Heterochromatin Protein 1, A Known Suppressor Of Position-Effect Variegation, Is Highly Conserved In Drosophila, Robert F. Clark, Sarah C.R. Elgin

Biology Faculty Research

The Su(var)205 gene of Drosophila melanogaster encodes heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1), a protein located preferentially within beta-heterochromatin. Mutation of this gene has been associated with dominant suppression of position-effect variegation. We have cloned and sequenced the gene encoding HP1 from Drosophila virilis, a distantly related species. Comparison of the predicted amino acid sequence with Drosophila melanogaster HP1 shows two regions of strong homology, one near the N-terminus (57/61 amino acids identical) and the other near the C-terminus (62/68 amino acids identical) of the protein. Little homology is seen in the 5' and 3' untranslated portions of the gene, as well …

An Application-Oriented Error Control Scheme For High Speed Networks, Fengmin Gong, Guru Parulkar Nov 1992

An Application-Oriented Error Control Scheme For High Speed Networks, Fengmin Gong, Guru Parulkar

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Many new network applications demand interprocess communication (IPC) services that are not supported by existing transport network protocol mechanisms. Large bandwidth-delay products of high-speed networks also render the existing error control mechanism inefficient. This paper presents the design, evaluation, and implementations of an application-oriented error control scheme that can support efficient IPC for these applications in high-speed network environments.
