The Occurrence And Effect Of A Protozoan Parasite, Ophryocystis Elektroscirrha (Neogregarinida: Ophryocystidae) On Overwintering Monarch Butterflies, Danaus Plexippus (Lepidoptera: Danaidae) From Two California Winter Sites, Kingston L. H. Leong, H. K. Kaya, Michael A. Yoshimura, Dennis F. Frey

Biological Sciences

1. Monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus, from two overwintering populations, were found to have Ophryocystis elektroscirrha spores on their scales at rates between 53% and 68%. The frequency of butterflies with O.elektroscirrhaspores remained about the same between sites and throughout the winter.

2. The spores, recovered from all parts of the body of the butterfly, were most numerous on the abdomen, particularly near the posterior third.

3. Butterflies with spores survived as long as those without detectable spores at 10.1°C ±0.4 SE and 78.3% r.h. ±0.6SE. Insects with spores held at 19.4°C ±0.4SE and 44.9% r.h. ±1.5SE showed a …

Caring For Your Real Christmas Tree, John Ball, David Graper Nov 1992

Caring For Your Real Christmas Tree, John Ball, David Graper

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

During the holiday season, thousands of South Dakotans will continue the tradition of decorating a real Christmas tree. Gifts displayed beneath a fresh, fragrant, well-lit tree are a key part of many holiday memories. Sometimes people decide not to have a real Christmas tree and purchase an artificial tree instead. Often this is done because of a concern about fire safety. Real Christmas trees are not the fire risk that many believe.

Springwater Corridor Master Plan, Portland (Or.). Bureau Of Parks And Recreation

Portland Regional Planning History

This master plan sets the direction for development of the Springwater Corridor into the premier urban recreation and alternative transportation corridor in the State of Oregon, with an expected annual user count of over 400,000. With its connections to neighborhood, community and regional parks and open spaces, in addition to employment centers and residential neighborhoods, it will pull users from a region-wide area as well as the 150,000 people who live within a two-mile distance along the route of the Corridor.

Mapping Instream Habitat On The San Juan River Using Airborne Videography, Michael J. Pucherelli, William P. Goettlicher, Bureau Of Reclamation, U.S Department Of The Interior

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Concerns have been raised over the potential impacts of the Animas/LaPlata project and the regulation of Navajo Dam. Flow depletions in the San Juan River may adversely affect the remnant population of the native fish, particularly the endangered Colorado squawfish and the razorback sucker. A multiyear research program is currently being conducted on the San Juan River as a result of a Jeopardy Opinion delivered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Animas/LaPlata and the subsequent Reasonable and Prudent Alternative that was accepted. A mulidisciplinary research team composed of representatives from the affected agencies is currently investigating the relationship …

Variationally Stable Treatment Of Two- And Three-Photon Detachment Of H- Including Electron-Correlation Effects, Chih-Ray Liu, Bo Gao, Anthony F. Starace Nov 1992

Variationally Stable Treatment Of Two- And Three-Photon Detachment Of H- Including Electron-Correlation Effects, Chih-Ray Liu, Bo Gao, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

A variationally stable, adiabatic hyperspherical treatment of two- and three-photon detachment of H- is presented. Results are compared with analytic predictions of a zero-range potential model of H-. Detailed comparisions are made also with other theoretical results which include the effects of electron correlations. We predict analytically (and demonstrate numerically) an extreme sensitivity of the theoretical predictions to any errors in the value of the electron affinity employed. In an Appendix we show that the low-intensity limit of the Keldysh treatment [Sov. Phys. JETP 20, 1307 (1965)] of detachment of an electron bound in a zero-range …

Closing The Book On The School Trust Lands, C. Maison Heidelberg Nov 1992

Closing The Book On The School Trust Lands, C. Maison Heidelberg

Vanderbilt Law Review

Public education in the United States faces a crisis. Financially strapped state and local governments find funding more and more difficult to supply; as a result, the quality of public education suffers. Predictably citizens are concerned, yet they resist paying increased taxes to meet the rising costs.

School trust lands provide one potential source of extra revenue. Though their existence is not well known, these lands are tremendous assets held by most states other than the original thirteen. In general, they have produced significant amounts of revenue for public education, yet historically state management of the lands has been marred …
