High-Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Rat Incisor Ameloblasts, A. Nanci, S. Zalzal, F. W. K. Kan

Scanning Microscopy

The internal three-dimensional organization of secretory and maturation stage ameloblasts was examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy. Particular attention was given to the structure of the Golgi apparatus, the distribution of smooth membrane tubulo-vesicular elements and their relationship with endosomal/lysosomal components. Rat incisors were fixed by intracardiac perfusion with glutaraldehyde, decalcified and divided into segments. The tissues were cryoprotected with glycerol and freeze-fractured. They were then macerated in osmium, and after conductive staining with osmium/tannic acid, the samples were critical-point dried and sputtered with gold. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy showed that ameloblasts contain a well-developed Golgi apparatus, even in …

The Morphology And Chemistry Of Two Willow Species In Relation To Moose Winter Browsing, Suzanne M. Suter

Biological Sciences

This study examines the interaction between moose (Alces alces gigas) and winter dormant willows (Salix alaxensis and Salix pulchra) in Alaska, emphasizing the impact of moose browsing on the forage produced by willow. In a two year field study, plant responses were examined with clipping treatments designed to simulate browsing by moose. The plant responses examined included biomass production, plant architecture, and concentration of plant tannins. Forage selection by moose in the study area is also addressed. Results suggest that a plant response of increased growth, decreased chemical defense, and redistribution of new biomass may explain the pattern of repeated …

Results From The 1992 Alaska Barley Breeding Program, Stephen M. Dofing, Charles W. Knight, Steve A. Blake

Circulars

The development of improved plant cultivars is accomplished through comprehensive plant breeding programs. Such programs: 1) evaluate promising germplasm to identify superior-performing genotypes for use as parents; 2) create new genetic recombinations from these selected parental genotypes using crossing or other means; 3) evaluate segregating progeny from the resulting families while exerting selection pressure for desirable characteristics; and 4) identify superior-performing cultivars in yield trials conducted across multiple environments. This circular documents the current status of research in cultivar development associated with the Alaska barley breeding program.

The bow and arrow is a tool with a very long history. In the Old World its use dates back to paleolithic times, with firm evidence in the form of arrow shafts dated to the early ninth millennium b.c. (McEwen, Miller, & Bergman, 1991). More tenuous evidence from projectile points in Africa may push that back as far as 11000 b.c. (Blitz, 1988). The focus of this paper, however, will be the adoption and subsequent use of the bow in the Great Basin region of the West.

Radiation Transport In Cloudy And Aerosol Loaded Atmospheres, Arve Kylling

The equation for radiation transport in vertical inhomogeneous absorbing, scattering, and emitting atmospheres is derived from first principles. It is cast in a form amenable to solution, and solved using the discrete ordinate method. Based on the discrete ordinate solution a new computationally efficient and stable two-stream algorithm which accounts for spherical geometry is developed. The absorption and scattering properties of atmospheric molecules and particulate matter is discussed. The absorption cross sections of the principal absorbers in the atmosphere, H₂O, CO₂ and O₃, vary erratically and rapidly with wavelength.
