The fading cow-town of Quinlin was quiet but for the faint buzz of insects. Meyers Market and Gas Station was still going, but the rest of the town was abandoned, the local ranchers preferring to drive forty- five miles south to Flagstaff to do their shopping.

Characterization Of Boron Carbide Thin Films Fabricated By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition From Boranes, Sunwoo Lee, John Mazurowski, G. Ramseyer, Peter A. Dowben
Characterization Of Boron Carbide Thin Films Fabricated By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition From Boranes, Sunwoo Lee, John Mazurowski, G. Ramseyer, Peter A. Dowben
Peter Dowben Publications
We have fabricated boron carbide thin films on Si(111) and other substrates by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (PECVD). The PECVD of boron carbides from nido-cage boranes, specially nido-pentaborane(9) (B5H9), and methane ( CH4) is demonstrated. The band gap is closely correlated with the boron to carbon ratio and can range from 0.77 to 1.80 eV and is consistent with the thermal activation barrier of 1.25 eV for conductivity. We have made boron carbide by PECVD from pentaborane and methane that is sufficiently isotropic to obtain resistivities as large as 1010 Ω cm …

Dielectric Properties And Ferroelectricity In Main-Chain Nematic Polymers, Eugene Terentjev, Rolfe G. Petschek
Dielectric Properties And Ferroelectricity In Main-Chain Nematic Polymers, Eugene Terentjev, Rolfe G. Petschek
Faculty Scholarship
The longitudinal dielectric susceptibility of a polar (directed) thermotropic main-chain nematic polymer is derived in the mean-field approximation, accounting for long-range interaction forces and the local-field effects in the media. It is shown that this susceptibility exponentially increases for some range of orientational order and then either diverges or saturates at some characteristic degree of order. This is expected in some circumstances to result in a true ferroelectric phase. A simple calculation of this transition is given, assuming that long-range dipolar interactions are the only relevant polar interactions. Other relevant effects and the limitations of our approximation are discussed briefly.

Scanning Microscopy
Spectra® fibers and fabrics have been treated to enhance surface friction to determine if ballistic penetration resistance of Spectra fabric can be increased with improved interfiber friction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has shown the extent of surface modification for plasma treated Spectra yarns and the uniformity of coverage for dip-coated yarns and fabrics. Of particular interest is the observation by SEM that plasma gases etch the surface of the polyethylene, producing varying effects on the fiber surface friction. While difficult to measure spectroscopically, the presence of coatings that affect fiber friction are confirmed by SEM.

Classical Description And Calculation Of Ionization In Collisions Of 100 Ev Electrons And Positrons With He And H2, D. R. Schultz, L. Meng, Ronald E. Olson
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
In order to explore the range of applicability of the classical trajectory Monte Carlo technique concerning the phenomena associated with light-particle impact of atoms and molecules we present calculations of the singly and doubly differential cross sections for 100 eV electron and positron impact of He and H2 Through comparison with experimental measurements it is noted in what regimes of ejection energy and angle the classical model describes reasonably the process of ionization by electrons. We find that reasonable agreement is obtained regarding the integrated (singly differential and total) cross sections while the features of the doubly differential cross …
