Investigationinto The Role Of Goats And Sheep In The Epidemiology Of Foot-And-Mouth Disease In Northern Thailand, Pornchai Chomnanpood, Laurence Gleeson Dec 1992

Investigationinto The Role Of Goats And Sheep In The Epidemiology Of Foot-And-Mouth Disease In Northern Thailand, Pornchai Chomnanpood, Laurence Gleeson

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Investigations were carried out to determine whether goats and sheep were involved in the endemic cycle of foot-and-mouth disease in Northern Thailand. Evidence was obtained from serological surveys and an outbreak investigation. Serological data on surveyed flock was obtained from the virus neutralization test and the virus infection associated antigen agar gel diffusion test. It appeared that infection with all 3 endemic serotypes of foot-and-mouth disease virus occurred in goats and sheep, although in some cases the infection was subclinical.

Some Relationships Between Sexual Behavioural Parameters And Semen Characteristics In The Boar, Jamroen Thiengtham Dec 1992

Some Relationships Between Sexual Behavioural Parameters And Semen Characteristics In The Boar, Jamroen Thiengtham

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study examined the correlations between some sexual behaviour parameters and semen characteristics. Five mature crossbred boars were housed individually and were trained for semen collection using a dummy sow in a collection pen. Semen was collected twice weekly from each boar by the gloved-hand technique during the 4-week study period. Forty-three ejaculates were obtained from these experimental boars. The following individual sexual behaviour activities of the boars towards the dummy sow were recorded during semen collection time to first mount, time to penile extension, time to commencement of ejaculation, time from first mount to penile extension and duration of …

Ultrastructure Of Nosema Marucae Sp. N. (Microspora, Nosematidae), A Pathogen Of Maruca Testulalis (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae), Maurice O. Odindo, Walter G.Z.O. Jura

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The development of Nosema marucae was followed in its host, the legume pod borer Maruca testulalis. The meronts had an irregular cell body and were binucleated, with the large diplokaryon occupying most of the cell. The sporonts contained many rough endoplastic reticula. The sporoblasts had a granular cytoplasm with a large number of ribosomes, and nuclear division and cellular cleavage were prevalent, particularly from 84 to 120 h after inoculation. Sporoblasts and young spores were evident from 108 to 144 h after inoculation. In the mature spores, the exocuticle had a rough and sculptured surface and the endocuticle thinned considerably …

Strategic Planning In Extension, Ellen L. Fitzsimmons, Gerald R. Campbell

Journal of Extension

The key lesson to be learned from strategic planning is the importance of looking outward as we define our future. That idea is under continual threat in an academic world characterized by increasing specialization and the compartmentalization of knowledge.

Begrudging Ag Resources Won't Solve Funding Problems, Henry M. Bahn

Journal of Extension

Instead of begrudging agricultural Extension's slice, isn't it time to work together to increase the whole pie? Resources are scarce throughout Extension. Coveting those of other program areas serves only to polarize CES at a time when the entire system is vulnerable to criticism and embarrassment.

"Butchery And Plunder In God's Name": The Causes Of Oliver Cromwell's 1649-1650 Irish Campaign, Thomas M. Mulhern Dec 1992

"Butchery And Plunder In God's Name": The Causes Of Oliver Cromwell's 1649-1650 Irish Campaign, Thomas M. Mulhern

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes to examine the campaign of Oliver Cromwell against the Irish in the years 1649-1650, and its immediate and long-range causes. This will be done by examining the campaign itself and the history of the English and Irish from their first meeting to the final confrontation between the Irish and Cromwell.

The introduction looks at the events occurring, in England and Ireland, in 1649 and why Cromwell was called upon to mount a campaign against the Irish.

The first chapter explores the Ulster Rising of 1641 and the eight years of war that followed, culminating in the arrival …

Congress And Early Federalist Military Policy: An Examination Of Defense Related Roll Calls In The Second United States Congress, 1792-1793, Elbert S. Barker Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The legislators of the Second United States House of Representatives faced a set of challenging military and political problems when they met in November 1791. The issue of what would be the primary means of the young nation's defense had not yet been determined. The old British and colonial precedents of a militia as the first line of defense were firmly rooted in the minds of most congressmen meeting in Philadelphia. Many of the legislators had been indelibly imprinted with a fear of a large standing army in peacetime from their own personal experiences in the pre-Revolutionary days. Many of …

Neurophysiologic Bases For Abnormal Muscle Coactivation Patterns In Hemiparetic Stroke, Julius P.A. Dewald Dec 1992

Neurophysiologic Bases For Abnormal Muscle Coactivation Patterns In Hemiparetic Stroke, Julius P.A. Dewald

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To study disturbed muscle activation patterns in hemiparetic stroke, the EMG activity in spastic-paretic and contralateral elbow muscles of 10 stroke subjects were compared during graded directionally varying voluntary isometric contractions. We observed significant shifts in the peak EMG angle and increases in the angular range of EMG activity in the impaired upper limb. Furthermore, we observed stereotypic coactivation of many muscles acting at the same joint or at different joints across all subjects.

The effect of elbow angle changes on muscle coactivation patterns was studied by examining isometric torque-angle relations under passive and active conditions in 8 stroke subjects. …

Rebuilding For Efficiency: Improving The Energy Use Of Reconstructed Residences In South Florida, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

On August 24th, 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated a large part of South Dade County in Florida. With over 35,000 homes to be rebuilt, there is interest in seeing if these reconstructed residences can be made more energy-efficient.

This report provides a comprehensive assessment of potential energy efficiency improvements for both new and existing homes in South Florida. Over forty energy-efficiency measures were considered in the analysis. Many homes in the effected zone experienced damage to their windows, roofs and the surrounding landscape. As a result, the analysis closely examined options associated with these design aspects. All major end-uses of electricity …

Formal Specifications And Design Of A Message Router, Christian Creveull, Gruia-Catalin Roman Dec 1992

Formal Specifications And Design Of A Message Router, Christian Creveull, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Formal derivation refers to a family of design techniques that entail the development of programs which are guaranteed to be correct by construction. This paper investigates the possible application of one such technique-- UNITY-style specification refinement-- to industrial-grade problems. The formal specification and design of a message router illustrates the derivation process and helps identify those methodological elements that are likely to contribute to successful use of this technique in industrial environment. Although, the message router cannot be characterized as being industrial-grade, it is a sophisticated problem that pose significant specification and design challenges-- its apparent simplicity is rather deceiving, …

Efficient Accommodation Of May-Alias Information In Ssa Form, Ron Cytron, Reid Gershbein Dec 1992

Efficient Accommodation Of May-Alias Information In Ssa Form, Ron Cytron, Reid Gershbein

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We present an algorithm for incrementally including may-alias information into Static Single Assignment form by computing a sequence of increasingly precise (and correspondingly larger) partial SSA forms. Our experiments show significant speedup of our method over exhaustive use of may-alias information, as optimization problems converge well before most may-aliases are needed.

The Effect Of Delayed Feedback Information On Network Performance, Andreas D. Bovopoulos, Aurel A. Lazar Dec 1992

The Effect Of Delayed Feedback Information On Network Performance, Andreas D. Bovopoulos, Aurel A. Lazar

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The performance of a network subject to either state dependent or state independent flow control is investigated. In the state dependent case, the flow control policy is a function of the total number of packets for which the controller has not yet received an acknowledgement. In this case it is shown that the optimal flow control is a sliding window mechanism. The effect of the delayed feedback on the network performance as well as the size of the window are studied. The state independent optimal rate is also derived. The performance of the state dependent and state independent flow control …
