The Tennessee School Board Chairperson's Perception Of School Accountability, Dennis L. Peters Dec 1992

The Tennessee School Board Chairperson's Perception Of School Accountability, Dennis L. Peters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to obtain and analyze information about the perceptions of local school board chairpersons in Tennessee toward school accountability. A questionnaire was designed to gather information from all school board chairpersons in the state of Tennessee. The questionnaire contained 32 attitudinal statements related to school accountability and 11 demographic questions about the chairpersons and the system they represent. The mean score, frequency, and percentage of the responses were computed and analyzed. The Kruskal-Wallis one-was ANOVA was computed to determine if significant differences existed in the mean score of the 32 attitudinal statements based on the …

Functions And Responsibilities Of Superintendents And School Boards In Tennessee As Perceived By Superintendents And School Board Chairpersons, Steven L. Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if differences exist between the superintendents and the school board chairpersons of Tennessee in regard to the perceived functions and responsibilities of each group. The study also attempted to determine if factors such as age, size of the school district, educational level of the superintendent and the board member, years of service as superintendent or as a board member, the existence of clearly written board policies defining the functions and responsibilities of the superintendent and the school board, and elected versus school board appointed superintendent status had any effect on the perceived …

A Study Of Selected Strategies For Allocating Funds To Improve County Roads, Ronald E. Reid Dec 1992

A Study Of Selected Strategies For Allocating Funds To Improve County Roads, Ronald E. Reid

Dissertations

Strategies for the ranking of county road improvement projects can be based on a rating that reflects the physical condition of the pavement, a rating that reflects the pavement roughness, a rating that incorporates the combination of physical condition of the pavement and the pavement roughness (its pavement serviceability rating), or a rating that takes into account the age of the pavement and amount of traffic

This study compared the relationship between the strategy of the ranking of each road segment based on that segment's: (a) surface distress rating and roughness rating, (b) surface distress rating and pavement serviceability rating, …

The Naturalistic Study Of Performance Feedback In A Higher Education Administrative Setting, Karen M. Reese Dec 1992

The Naturalistic Study Of Performance Feedback In A Higher Education Administrative Setting, Karen M. Reese

Dissertations

Examined in this study is the performance feedback provided to administrative staff at the research location and the relationship of that feedback to performance. Data were collected through semistructured interviews from 27 subjects at a small midwestern coeducational public university. Six research questions were investigated: the conditions under which feedback occurs, the sources of feedback and their relative usefulness, barriers to feedback giving and seeking, and the relationship of feedback to performance.

The desire to correct a deficiency was the primary catalyst to informal feedback being given to staff. Supervisors became aware of staffs' deficiencies through observation and complaints from …

Axonal Degeneration In Diabetic Neuropathy: An Assessment Of Single Fiber Electromyography, Chein-Wei Chang, Lee-Ming Chuang, I-Nan Lien

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Peripheral neuropathy is an important complication of diabetes mellitus. However, neuropathological changes in diabetic neuropathy with axonal degeneration or segmental demyelination are still unclear. By using a newly developing electrodiagnostic method of single fiber electromyography (SFEMG) with a computer-aided program, mean jitter value and muscle fiber density were measured in extensor digitorum communis (EDC) and anterior tibial (AT) muscles from 36 diabetic patients with neuropathy (group 1) and 12 patients without neuropathy (group Ⅱ) proved by nerve conduction study. The results showed an increased mean jitter value, fiber density and abnormal percentage both in EDC and AT muscles in group …

Intracavernous Injection Of Prostaglandin E1 In Spinal Cord Injured Patient With Erectile Dysfunction: A Preliminary Report, Fuk-Tan Tang, Pong-Yuen Wong, May-Kuen Wong Dec 1992

Intracavernous Injection Of Prostaglandin E1 In Spinal Cord Injured Patient With Erectile Dysfunction: A Preliminary Report, Fuk-Tan Tang, Pong-Yuen Wong, May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Sexual dysfunction with inadequate or poorly sustained erection is a common problem among spinal cord injured patients although reflex erection may be preserved in upper motor neuron lesion and lower motor neuron and psychogenic erection may be preserved in incomplete lesion respectively. Methods to restore erection, such as vaccum tumescense constriction therapy and penile prostheses may be useful but potentially have adverse effects. Recently, intracavernous injection of prostaglandin E1 has been found beneficial to patients with neurogenic erectile dysfunction. In our study, we administered intracavernous injection of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), 15 μ g, to seven patients with neurogenic erectile dysfunction due …

Risk Factors In Chinese Young Strokes, Huey-Jen Lay, Chein-Wei Chang, I-Nan Lein Dec 1992

Risk Factors In Chinese Young Strokes, Huey-Jen Lay, Chein-Wei Chang, I-Nan Lein

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

One hundred and fifty nine patients who experienced the first episode of stroke between 15 to 45 year-old is analyzed for possible risk factors. These patients whose diagnosis of stroke were all approved by the computerized tomography, were collected from the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) from 1983 to 1990. They included 79 cases of cerebral hemorrhage (48 males and 31 females) and 80 cases of cerebral infarction (47 males and 33 females). The frequency of male stroke was about 30% higher than female. Atherothrombosis and rheumatic heart disease still dominate in cerebral infarction. The main etiology of cerebral hemorrhage …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Capsular tightening at the shoulder is a common disorder, usually referred to as frozen of cases seen by physiatrist are those in which no specific cause can be determined for the stiffening. It may also be a sequela of other diseases, such as stroke, fracture, malignancy, etc. We present four cases of secondary frozen shoulder without conspicuous etiology. The case 1 and 2 had the underlined malignancy. The case 3 and 4 suffered from fracture of forearm and painful sensation over the shoulder joint due to traffic accident. The first impression was secondary frozen shoulder due to proloned immobilization. However, …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Manipulation is a classical method used to treat musculo-skeletal soreness and pain with its own indications , but the etiologies of aching pain are versatile. It is extremely dangerous to apply manipulation before adequate diagnosis. This is a report of two cases with injury of cervical cord myelopathy by inadequate manipulation. The first patient was 52 year-old man who suffered form neck and right hand soreness for move than a year. He received manipulation two weeks before this episode. He had a sense of electrical shock during manipulation with numbness and weakness of all the extremities developed gradually after he returned …

Psychology Faculty Publications

The present study is part of an ongoing series of experiments aimed at delineation of the neural pathways that mediate fear-potentiated startle, a model of conditioned fear in which the acoustic startle reflex is enhanced when elicited in the presence of a light previously paired with shock. A number of cortical areas that might be involved in relaying information about the visual conditioned stimulus (the light) in fear-potentiated startle were investigated. One hundred thirty-five rats were given 10 light-shock pairings on each of 2 consecutive days, and l-2 d later electrolytic or aspiration lesions in various cortical areas were performed. …

Diagnoses of 50 intake clients at NOVA Therapeutic Community's residential facility were compared using Chi-Square analysis. Agreement between the two instruments was promising at the cluster level (p

An Object Based Approach Towards The Automation Of Office Procedures Using Intelligent Messages, Robert L. Palumbo Dec 1992

An Object Based Approach Towards The Automation Of Office Procedures Using Intelligent Messages, Robert L. Palumbo

Student Work

Office support systems are used to automate routine office tasks. Since office tasks often require the cooperation of several office workers who may be physically dispersed, it is important to develop advanced communication systems that better facilitate collaborative and cooperative office work among office workers.

In this thesis, we propose an approach to the construction of advanced communication systems in which messages are represented as objects that are “intelligent” and “active” and can therefore perform certain activities (such as interacting with various entities to collect data) and decisions (such as dynamically deciding which user to go to next) on their …
