A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study Of The Chick Chorioallantoic Membrane: Cell Death And The Involvement Of Oxygen Free Radicals, A. Easterling, G. J. Burton, J. N. Skepper, M. H. Nasr-Esfahani
Scanning Microscopy
Cell death is a normal feature within the chick chorioallantoic membrane, occurring principally between days 10 and 14 of incubation.
Samples of chorioallantoic membrane were obtained on days 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 of incubation, after the creation of artificial air chambers on day 3. These were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) after staining for acid phosphatase activity, and by light microscopy after demonstrating oxygen free radicals with nitro blue tetrazolium. On day 6, small defects in the plasmalemma, approximately 200 nm in diameter, could be seen by SEM. A sequence of events leading …

A free-radical retrograde polymerization process for forming a polymer. An admixture of reactants including predetermined amounts of a monomer, a solvent, and a free-radical-initiator is reacted. A precipitation polymerization reaction occurs such that a polymer-rich phase is at a temperature generally above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the admixture.

Patents Granted
A newly discovered microorganism was isolated in a biologically pure culture and designated Clostridium ljungdahlii, having the identifying characteristics of ATCC No. 49587. Cultured in an aqueous nutrient medium under anaerobic conditions, this microorganism is capable of producing ethanol and acetate from CO and H2O and/or CO2 and H2 in synthesis gas. Under optimal growth conditions, the microorganism produces acetate in preference to ethanol. Conversely, under non-growth conditions, ethanol production is favored over acetate.
