Absence Of A Family Safety Net For Homeless Families, Kay Young Mcchesney
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Analysis of data from interviews of 80 mothers in five shelters for homeless families suggests that the availability of housing support from kin may be a selection mechanism determining which families become homeless. The availability of kin housing support is seen as a function of four factors: family structure, proximity, control of adequate housing resources, and estrangement. Policy implications are discussed

Production Of A High-Density State-Selected Metastable Neon Beam, J. A. Brand, J. E. Furst, Timothy James Gay, Laird D. Schearer
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We have developed a high-density source of metastable neon and have selectively quenched both metastable species using a standing-wave dye laser. The source is compact, stable, and produces an average intensity of 3.6x1014 sr-1 s-1 and a density on target of 7.7x106 cm-3.

Extrapolation Procedures In Mott Electron Polarimetry, Timothy James Gay, M. A. Khakoo, J. A. Brand, J. E. Furst, W. V. Meyer, W. M.K.P. Wijayaratna, F. B. Dunning

In standard Mott electron polarimetry using thin gold film targets, extrapolation procedures must be used to reduce the experimentally measured asymmetries A to the values they would have for scattering from single atoms. These extrapolations involve the dependence of A on either the gold film thickness t or the maximum detected electron energy loss in the target ΔE. Using a concentric cylindrical-electrode Mott polarimeter, we have studied and compared these two types of extrapolations over the electron energy range 20-100 keV. The potential systematic errors which can result from such procedures are analyzed in detail, particularly with regard to the …

The Impact Of Site-Based Management On Perceived Roles Of Superintendents, Board Chairpersons, Principals And Selected Central Office Personnel In Tennessee School Systems, Narvia D. Haywood

The introduction of site-based management has had an impact on the operation of school systems in Tennessee; however no one seems to know for certain what that impact was. Findings from this study revealed that there is a basic understanding of the impact of site-based management as perceived by superintendents, board chairpersons, principals, personnel, budget, curriculum, and staff development administrators. Findings also revealed that central office staff and principals, for the most part, perceive that the superintendents and board chairpersons were supportive of site-based management programs. One hundred and eighty-one educators, including board chairpersons, responded to a fifty-four item questionnaire. …

Established in May of 1991, the Walter Anderson Museum of Art (the WAMA), a private non-profit 501 (C) (3) organization located in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, is the outgrowth of the volunteer membership organization the Friends of Walter Anderson (hereafter called the Friends) The Friends was incorporated in 1974 with the wife and four children of Walter Anderson (hereafter called the Family) participating as original incorporators; other Anderson enthusiasts joined the organization, whose purpose was to acquire works by the artist Walter Inglis Anderson (19031965), preserve and document those acquisitions, and build a museum to house the collection (1).

The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) was established in 1967, as an autonomous agency of the state government to distribute line-item appropriations to the major arts institutions in the state. Even though, as stated in its founding legislation, the mission of the newly formed Arts Council was to create a nurturing environment for all the arts throughout the state, it was believed, at the time of its inception, that the only arts that deserved to receive public funding were presented by the five already established major arts organizations (Backus 1992). This internship report describes the student's experiences from January until May 1992, while she worked for the Visual Arts Department of the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The paper will also give the reader some insight into the history and the current operating conditions of the Center. The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) is a non-profit, government and community supported institution, and is the home of the nation's third largest artists' organization, the National Association of Artists' Organization. Trimethyltin (TMT) is a neurotoxin occurring in the environment. Exposure to (TMT) is known to destroy specific neuronal components of the hippocampus in the rat and to cause clinical symptoms in exposed humans, including mnemonic deficits, that indicate hippocampal involvement. In addition to hippocampal cell loss TMT causes significant increases in cholinergic markers such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) stain density and choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity in the hippocampus of rats. However, despite these observations the effect of TMT on hippocampal cholinergic system has not been investigated in detail. A Study Of The W. Edwards Deming Total Quality Management Concept As It Applies To Education In Tennessee, Ronald Wilcox

The purpose of this study was to determine Tennessee superintendents' perceptions of the educational application of the W. Edwards Deming Total Quality Management Model. The Total Quality Management Model was divided into four parts for the purpose of this study based on review of the literature. The parts are eight selected underlying principles, Deming's 14 points, Deming's deadly diseases, and process improvement tools. A survey instrument developed by the investigator was sent to all 139 Tennessee superintendents. A total of 112 of the superintendents responded representing 81% of the population. Fifty-one percent of the respondents are using some of the …
