Behavior Of A Centrally Notched Cross-Ply And Unidirectional Ceramic Matrix Composite In Tension-Compression Fatigue, William A. Weidenaar
Behavior Of A Centrally Notched Cross-Ply And Unidirectional Ceramic Matrix Composite In Tension-Compression Fatigue, William A. Weidenaar
Theses and Dissertations
Centrally notched (hole), cross-ply, ((0/90)2)s, and unidirectional, (0)8 laminates of Silicon Carbide fiber-reinforced Aluminosilicate glass, SiC/1723, were fatigue tested under tension-compression loading with a load ratio of -1. Damage accumulated continuously for both lay- ups, leading to eventual failure and a reduced fatigue life. Critical damage in the cross-ply consisted of longitudinal cracks in the 90° plies growing and combining with transverse cracks to effectively eliminate the 90° plies' load carrying capability and allowing the specimen to buckle. Critical damage in the unidirectional lay-up consisted of longitudinal cracks which initiated at the shear stress concentration …

X-Aaarf An X Windows Version Of The Afit Algorithm Animation Research Facility, Charles R. Wright Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The AFIT Algorithm Animation Research Facility was developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) as a teaching aid for data structures and algorithm design of sequential processes. However, AAARF's unique design makes it particularly suitable for the animation of algorithms running on remote systems. In particular, an extensive set of parallel performance animations has been developed for the Intel iPSC/2 Hypercube for parallel program analysis and performance optimization. The AAARF system was originally developed using the Sun Microsystems' SunView(TM) windowing system. Recent advances in Graphical User Interface (GUI) technology combined with Sun's adoption of the X Window System …
An Object-Oriented Computer Aided Design Program For Modern Control Systems Analysis, Frederick L. Trevino
An Object-Oriented Computer Aided Design Program For Modern Control Systems Analysis, Frederick L. Trevino
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation is a continuation of the ICECAP-PC research project conducted under Prof. Gary B. Lamont at the Air Force Institute of Technology. It is an ongoing development of a public domain Computer Aided Design (CAD) package for Control Engineering students and faculty, with a special emphasis on education. This investigation focuses on three areas. First, an object-oriented environment is specified, designed and implemented. The functional structure of ICECAP-PC is then converted into an object-oriented structure because object-orientation provides an advanced logic and implementation structure and effectively addresses common software engineering issues. Additionally, a new interface featuring pull-down menus, mouse …

Identification Of The Initial Transient In Discrete-Event Simulation Output Using The Kalman Filter, Mark A. Gallagher
Identification Of The Initial Transient In Discrete-Event Simulation Output Using The Kalman Filter, Mark A. Gallagher
Theses and Dissertations
Data truncation is a commonly accepted method of dealing with initialization bias in discrete-event simulation. Algorithms for determining the appropriate initial-data truncation point for univariate and multivariate output are proposed. The techniques entail averaging across replications and estimating a steady-state output model in a state-space framework. Using the estimated model, Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE), which uses Kalman filters with different parameter vectors, is applied. Based on the filters' residuals, the conditional probabilities of each filter's specific parameter vector being correct are determined. The MMAE parameter estimates are the probabilistic- weighted average of the filters' assumed parameter vectors. The estimated …
Solving Nonlinear Composite Material Problems Using The Automated Structural Optimization System (Astros), Robert Bolha
Solving Nonlinear Composite Material Problems Using The Automated Structural Optimization System (Astros), Robert Bolha
Theses and Dissertations
Most advanced composite materials have nonlinear stress versus strain curves--grossly so in the laminas shear direction. If linear approximations are used, overly conservative design will result. This thesis expands the usefulness of the Automated Structural Optimization System (ASTROS) finite element (FE) program by incorporating a newly developed capability to include material nonlinearities. By dividing a FE problem into several intervals, and incorporating the changing nature of the nonlinear material properties within each element, a good approximation of the laminate's actual stresses and strains can be obtained without the undue experimentation involved in testing every individual configuration. Each material property is …
Nonlinear Large Displacement And Moderate Rotational Characteristics Of Composite Beams Incorporating Transverse Shear Strain, Stephen G. Creaghan
Nonlinear Large Displacement And Moderate Rotational Characteristics Of Composite Beams Incorporating Transverse Shear Strain, Stephen G. Creaghan
Theses and Dissertations
This research was directed toward the investigation of nonlinear large displacements and moderate rotations of composite beam structures considering a finite element potential energy approach incorporating through the thickness shear strain as an analytical function. This approach was compared to large rotation theories. Test cases were run to evaluate numerical algorithms Riks method and displacement imposed techniques were employed. The limitations and advantages of both methods were considered. Loading arrangements included concentrated forces as well as moments.
Effect Of Thickness And Ply Layup On The Collapse Characteristics Of Cylindrical Composite Shells With Large Cutouts, James C. Hatfield
Effect Of Thickness And Ply Layup On The Collapse Characteristics Of Cylindrical Composite Shells With Large Cutouts, James C. Hatfield
Theses and Dissertations
This study involved a numerical and experimental investigation of the geometric instability(collapse loads/displacements) of vertically unsupported graphite/epoxy cylindrical shell panels undergoing axial compression. Symmetric quasi-isotropic and cross-ply laminates, with and without 4 X4 centralized cutouts, were investigated for three thicknesses:8,16,and 24 plies. The experimental data was compared to results from SHELL, a geometrically nonlinear finite-element computer program which incorporates a parabolic transverse shear strain distribution through the thickness. Good correlation was obtained for shells with large cutouts between the SHELL numerical data and the experimental results. This research verified that the SHELL program will provide good predictions of the collapse …
Creating And Manipulating Formalized Software Architectures To Support A Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Cynthia G. Anderson
Creating And Manipulating Formalized Software Architectures To Support A Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Cynthia G. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated technology which enables sophisticated users to specify, generate, and maintain application software in domain-oriented terms. To realize this new technology, a development environment, called Architect, was designed and implemented. Using canonical formal specifications of domain objects, Architect rapidly composes these specifications into a software application and executes a prototype of that application as a means to demonstrate its correctness before any programming language specific code is generated. Architect depends upon the existence of a formal object base (or domain model) which was investigated by another student in related research. The research described in this thesis relied on …
A Unified Model Of Program Behavior, Douglas T. Michel
A Unified Model Of Program Behavior, Douglas T. Michel
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an attempt to account for and unify the three types of locality: temporal, spatial, and structural. A diverse sample of traces are used in measuring program behavior with respect to these localities and a model is presented which represents the memory references a program generates as it goes through execution. The model is validated by estimating, the entropy of a synthetically generated trace and comparing it with actual traces. The results indicate that there is more predictability contained in the original trace than what the model was able to capture. Different variations of the model were tried …

An Investigation Of Structural Locality In The Memory Referencing Behavior Of Computer Programs, Michael E. Bletzinger
An Investigation Of Structural Locality In The Memory Referencing Behavior Of Computer Programs, Michael E. Bletzinger
Theses and Dissertations
The nature of structural locality as defined by same stack distance access is investigated in this thesis. The question is whether structural locality can be characterized as an inherent type of behavior. The results revealed that structural locality is strongly influenced by a program's design and phase of execution. Entropy measurements revealed that the predictiveness of structural locality is also influenced by program design. A Markov model was refined to capture the characteristics of structural locality that were measured. Trace synthesis demonstrated some success in reproducing same stack distance run distributions when the model had enough states to encompass the …

Development Of A Prototype Air Force Institute Of Technology (Afit) Research Management System (Arms), David N. Schaaf, Carl W. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study was to design, develop, test, and evaluate an initial prototype information system to enhance the conduct and management of research in the School of Systems and Logistics at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). To accomplish this goal, the researchers developed and completed a methodology that was generally patterned after the milestones in a typical system development life cycle. The proof-of-concept nature of this research caused the researchers to also map the study's seven major objectives into a second system development model called the Spiral Model (Boehm, 1988:61). This hybrid approach provided better defined …

The Air Force has equipped its aircraft with avionic systems such as Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Guidance Systems (INS) capable of providing accurate navigation solutions. The aircrews flying these aircraft require a system that can either survive the hostile environments encountered in combat or notify the aircrew that their performance has been significantly degraded. This research focuses on failure detection and isolation techniques using an extended Kalman filter and generalized likelihood ratios using matched filters. Analysis is conducted using a Kalman filter development package known as the Multimode Simulation for Optimal Filter Evaluation (MSOFE). Both a large order …
Processability Of Polythiophene Thin Films By Ultraviolet Photo Bleaching, Derek D. Fletcher
Processability Of Polythiophene Thin Films By Ultraviolet Photo Bleaching, Derek D. Fletcher
Theses and Dissertations
Materials possessing strong 𝜒(3) optical properties such as Polythiophene are sought for the production of optical switches. Polythiophene thin films produced by plasma enhanced CVD show a surface rms roughness of 10-15 angstroms over single square micron areas which is acceptable for wave guiding in the near IR. This research investigates permanently changing the optical properties of such a thin film by exposure to UV radiation (254 nm, 35 mW/cm2), known as photo bleaching, in hope of creating a refractive index boundary for use in total internal reflection. After 60 minutes exposure the refractive index shows …
