Recent Research On Appropriate Strategies To Facilitate And Enhance Reading Comprehension Instruction Primary Level, Linda Kennedy
Recent Research On Appropriate Strategies To Facilitate And Enhance Reading Comprehension Instruction Primary Level, Linda Kennedy
Graduate Research Papers
At a time when literacy is more important than ever, national attention has refocused on reading to insure that all children learn this critical skill. Through the years, the entire realm of reading has been considered extremely complex and even controversial. In no other area in the whole field of education is there more partisanship than in the area of the teaching of reading. Samuels and Farstrup (1992) stated that after years of having more educational research dedicated to the subject than to any other, there is still no precise answer resolving the question of how to teach a child …

Writing Workshop For Eighth-Grade Students: A Descriptive Study, Jann Thompson Knight
Graduate Research Papers
This descriptive study was conducted to document and describe the implementation of a writing workshop program in an eighth-grade classroom. The success of this workshop approach to writing instruction was determined through evaluation of growth in written work as well as measurement of changes in student attitudes toward writing. Significant growth in the area of writing development was demonstrated by the students participating in the writing workshop program. Positive changes in attitudes toward writing were also reflected in the data collected as part of this study.

A Survey Of Wellness Perceptions Among Athletes/Nonathletes And Males/Females At A Community College In Rural Iowa, Darci J. Reutzel
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to identify differences that may exist in the perceived importance of specific wellness components, and their contributions to an individual's total wellness among: (1) athletes and nonathletes and (2) males and females at a community college in rural Iowa.
This descriptive study utilized a sample consisting of all spring semester students that lived in the residence halls at a community college in rural Iowa. The sample included 77 females and 145 males, for a total of 222 students. Of the 77 females, 18 were athletes, while 59 were nonathletes. Of the 145 males, 78 …

Portfolio Assessment In The Classroom, Ronda D. Steenblock

In many classrooms today, educators are implementing the whole language concept. Whole language is a theory of instruction--a set of beliefs about language, literacy, and learning that guides teaching (Pinnell & Matlin, 1989). Language is a process rather than a product. Children develop thinking-language abilities while engaging in the functions of language within the structure of whole units.
Communicating Teacher Expectations To Students, Susan A.H. Smith
Communicating Teacher Expectations To Students, Susan A.H. Smith
Graduate Research Papers
One can hardly begin research in the area of teacher expectations without beginning with Pygmalion in the Classroom, Rosenthal and Jacobson's 1968 study at the Oak School. Although debate continues as to the significance of the results it is important to note the innovations that this research generated. The education profession has been sensitized to the idea that teacher expectations may influence student performance. Research continues that may validate or disprove this notion. Good (1987) summarized much of the current research. In this 1987 research review he looked at self-fulfilling prophecy, how teachers formed expectations and several models for indirect …
Reading In The Preschool, Mary C. Simons
Reading In The Preschool, Mary C. Simons
Graduate Research Papers
Reading is the process of getting meaning from, or making sense of print (Anderson, 1969; Thorne, 1988). As quoted in Gallasch (1982), Goodman said "The reader starts with a graphic display, printed or handwritten, and if he is successful, he ends with meaning, a reconstruction of the writer's message" (p. 19 ). The critical component in reading is comprehension (Bromley, 1988; Goodman, 1982; Thorne, 1988). It is not enough to recognize or name a word. "The task is to get the underlying structures, to get at the meaning, and to constantly keep the meaning in mind" (Goodman, 1971, p. 7).
A Program Teachers Can Establish To Help Persuade Parents To Read Frequently To Their Children, Maureen Gilhooley Walker
A Program Teachers Can Establish To Help Persuade Parents To Read Frequently To Their Children, Maureen Gilhooley Walker
Graduate Research Papers
The teaching of reading begins before formal schooling. It begins before age five and before nine o'clock in the morning (Clark 1976). It starts with the first story that is read to the child and builds from there. A problem occurs when parents do not see the role of reading to their children as vital, and thus do not read to them frequently. Teachers should not only read to their students, but also convince parents that "they stand at the center of their children's educational world" (Smith 1990). Reading to children is an important aspect of reading development and success. …

Revising And Editing In Writing Workshops : Teacher-Student Conferencing, Peer Conferencing, Self-Conferencing, Miriam Baker
Graduate Research Papers
In the past ten years there have been major changes in the area of writing instruction. Calkins (1986), Graves (1983), Atwell (1987) and others have promoted the writing process where students choose to write about their own topics, conference about their work with teachers and peers, make revisions, edit, and publish. The process is often called Writers' Workshop with the emphasis placed on the individual writer's interests, skills, and needs. It has become an integral part of the Whole Language approach to the teaching of reading and writing.
Assessing Children's Emerging Literacy Through Anecdotal Records, Reva R. Arends
Assessing Children's Emerging Literacy Through Anecdotal Records, Reva R. Arends
Graduate Research Papers
Implementing the whole language concept into an instructional program involves a change in the assessment of student growth. With the focus on student involvement in the language processes to nurture language abilities, the traditional formal measures, usually standardized tests, are inappropriate. They report in quantitative terms a child's mastery of language fragments. Little information is acquired about how a child creates meaning within the structure of a whole unit--a story or poem
Cooperative Learning: Its Many Effective Uses In The Mathematics Classroom, David H. Michels
Cooperative Learning: Its Many Effective Uses In The Mathematics Classroom, David H. Michels
Graduate Research Papers
Most middle school educators agree that a major challenge for middle school teachers is to seek ways to create classroom environments and school learning climates that promote school success while reducing the disappointment and futility that saps students of their drive to engage in the learning process. One proven route to meeting this challenge is the use of cooperative learning in the classroom (Tyrrell, 1990). Many studies have shown that students in cooperative learning groups learn more than do students in traditional programs (Slavin, 1987).

Extending The Whole Language Concept Through A Thematic Unit, Susan Carlson Nothwehr
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to explore the process of integrating the language arts program through a literature base representative of the different genres. From the supporting professional references that will be cited, a unit utilizing these implications for instruction will be offered. The unit that illustrates the process of instructional development is Fun and Games and is appropriate for the upper elementary grade levels.

Sensitivity To 2,4-D In Sunflower As An Indicator Of Tolerance To The Sunflower Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), Marc D. Anderson, Gary J. Brewer
Sensitivity To 2,4-D In Sunflower As An Indicator Of Tolerance To The Sunflower Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), Marc D. Anderson, Gary J. Brewer
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Nine sunflower hybrids were evaluated for their sensitivity to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as measured by the production of ethylene. Sensitivity to 2,4-D was then compared with the degree of field tolerance to the sunflower midge, Contarinia schulzi Gagné, exhibited by each hybrid. For the hybrids evaluated, ethylene production increased with 2,4-D concentration and sensitivity to 2,4-D was inversely proportional to midge tolerance. The procedure may be useful in identifying midge tolerant germplasm.

Bounds On The Polymer-Length Distribution In Equilibrium Polymerization, Rolfe G. Petschek
Bounds On The Polymer-Length Distribution In Equilibrium Polymerization, Rolfe G. Petschek
Faculty Scholarship
We obtain upper bounds on the polymer-length distribution in a class of models for equilibrium polymerization. This rules out a recent claim for the existence of a collapsed phase in which a nonzero fraction of the monomers are in infinite polymer(s). We discuss the behavior of finite systems, in which a collapse of sorts does occur, and indicate how this collapse disappears in the thermodynamic limit.
The Geographical Analysis Of Mormon Temple Sites In Utah, Garth R. Liston
The Geographical Analysis Of Mormon Temple Sites In Utah, Garth R. Liston
Theses and Dissertations
The first eight temple sites in Utah were studied to determine important geographical characteristics of each, and to test the hypothesis that Mormon temple sites conform to definitions of sacred space. President Brigham Young of the Church greatly influenced the selection of the first four temple sites, and the construction of each until his death in 1877. Claimed revelation from God to Young and other leaders and members of the Church, was evident concerning the temple sites. The later four temple sites of the twentieth century were approved by the First Presidency of the Church, but local Church leaders and …
