Mott Electron Polarimetry, Timothy James Gay, F. B. Dunning
Mott Electron Polarimetry, Timothy James Gay, F. B. Dunning
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electron polarimeters based on Mott scattering are extensively used in atomic and molecular, solid state, nuclear, and high-energy physics. This use stems from the increasing realization that much additional information concerning many physical processes can be obtained through spin-dependent measurements. In this review we discuss the basic physics and application of Mott polarimetry. A number of different Mott polarimeter designs are described that illustrate the wide range of operating energies (10 eV-1 MeV) and geometries that can be used in such instruments. The calibration of Mott polarimeters is discussed together with the potential sources of systematic error that can arise …

Correction Of Chromatic Aberration With An Electron Mirror, Michael Stewart Mauck
Correction Of Chromatic Aberration With An Electron Mirror, Michael Stewart Mauck
Dissertations and Theses
The theoretical basis for using electron mirrors as correctors of chromatic aberration is presented and an experimental verification of correction of chromatic aberration is demonstrated. A hyperbolic electrostatic electron mirror operating in its converging range and at unity magnification was used as a corrector. A novel separating system with deflections taking place at image planes was developed to implement the mirror without impairing the resolution. Correction was demonstrated in an electron optical probe system. The chromatic aberration was measured by means of the shadows cast by a fine mesh placed near the final image. The experimental method and equipment are …

Depressed Children In The Classroom, Colleen Burke Nardone
Depressed Children In The Classroom, Colleen Burke Nardone
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to learn more about the school experience of depressed children. Four dysthymic fifth grade students were observed in their special education classroom, and three of them were also observed in a day-treatment program to learn about them and their perceptions of their school experience. Findings revealed a pervasive pattern of limited expression of feelings and questionable integration of their social skills curriculum into their lives. The conditions under which they lived outside of school raised questions as to whether they were appropriately labeled emotionally disturbed and whether it is desirable to require a …
Georgia Goes Superfund: A Look At The New Georgia Hazardous Site Response Act, Robert D. Mowrey
Georgia Goes Superfund: A Look At The New Georgia Hazardous Site Response Act, Robert D. Mowrey
Mercer Law Review
The enactment in 1980 of the Federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act ("CERCLA") is commonly attributed to the uproar surrounding the evacuation of the Love Canal neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York. The discovery of thousands of buried drums containing hazardous waste on a Douglas County, Georgia horse farm known as Basket Creek might be considered Georgia's Love Canal, not because of any particular environmental similarities to the Niagara Falls site, but because of the similarities in legislative impact. Just as the publicity surrounding Love Canal gave sudden rise to CERCLA, Basket Creek provided the primary impetus to …

Training And Maintenance Of Breast Self-Examination Skills, Bernardine M. Pinto
Training And Maintenance Of Breast Self-Examination Skills, Bernardine M. Pinto
Dissertations
Maintenance of breast self-examination (BSE) skills is crucial to the effectiveness of self-exams in early detection of breast tumors. While researchers have developed an effective technology for training these skills, the maintenance of BSE proficiency is questionable (Pennypacker et al., 1982). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of reassessment (and retraining) on the maintenance of BSE skills. Twenty-nine women (ages 25-64) were trained to criterion using the MammaCare training package. Experimental subjects were required to demonstrate their skills at a 2 month reassessment and received retraining if their skills had declined below criterion. Control subjects were …
Detection Of Sexual Cues: An Assessment Of Nonaggressive And Sexually Coercive College Males, Rita Kenyon-Jump
Detection Of Sexual Cues: An Assessment Of Nonaggressive And Sexually Coercive College Males, Rita Kenyon-Jump
Dissertations
Seventy-four nonaggressive and 78 sexually coercive college males, as determined by the Sexual Experiences Survey (Koss & Oros, 1982) and ranging in age from 18-25 years, participated in a study designed to assess their ability to detect specific behavioral cues of female partners’ unwillingness to engage in kissing, genital fondling, and sexual intercourse. Contrary to prediction, a 2 (nonaggression and sexual coercion) X 3 (kissing, fondling, and intercourse) analysis of variance revealed no statistically significant difference between the nonaggressive and sexually coercive males in their ability to detect cues of female unwillingness to engage in kissing, genital fondling, and sexual …
Spectral And Spatial Pattern Recognition In Digital Memory, John M. Amrine
Spectral And Spatial Pattern Recognition In Digital Memory, John M. Amrine
Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this research is to develop a model that can be used to solve combined spectral and spatial pattern recognition problems. The basis of my model is a multiobjective discrete programming model developed by Benabdullah and Wright (B and W). The model will be modified and then tested by solving a real world problem with SPOT multispectral imagery. Several improvements were added to the B and W model, namely standard border length accounting and control over which pixels are selected by the model. The model was also improved to process more than one channel of imagery at …
Correlation Based Target Location And Identification, Richard A. Wenzel
Correlation Based Target Location And Identification, Richard A. Wenzel
Theses and Dissertations
Correlation was investigated as a technique for locating and identifying visible light terrain board images of tanks, airplanes, and trucks. A correlator was built which utilizes the Fast Fourier Transform. The 180 images in the image set were correlated in both the raw form and after pre-processing via energy normalization and local energy normalization. The correlation of the raw images led to development of quantitative and heuristic rules for possible inclusion in a rule based expert system. The correlation of the local energy normalized images resulted in a 100 percent target location rate and can be used as a baseline …

The limitations and advantages of both methods were considered. Loading arrangements included concentrated forces as well as moments.
A Synthetic Environment For Satellite Modeling And Satellite Orbital Motion, David L. Pond
A Synthetic Environment For Satellite Modeling And Satellite Orbital Motion, David L. Pond
Theses and Dissertations
Analysts tasked to study satellites moving in space must often rely on photographs to conduct their analysis. Often these photographs do not adequately represent how satellites move in space, their spatial relationships, or their interaction with other satellites. What analysts need is a three- dimensional synthetic environment that depicts satellites as they actually move and interact in space. This thesis addresses the early development of the Satellite Modeler (SM), a system that allows analysts to study, satellite motion and maneuvering of computer aided design (CAD) models of those satellites in a three-dimensional orbit. The system contains equipment that allows analysts …

This investigation is a continuation of the ICECAP-PC research project conducted under Prof. Gary B. Lamont at the Air Force Institute of Technology. It is an ongoing development of a public domain Computer Aided Design (CAD) package for Control Engineering students and faculty, with a special emphasis on education. This investigation focuses on three areas. First, an object-oriented environment is specified, designed and implemented. The functional structure of ICECAP-PC is then converted into an object-oriented structure because object-orientation provides an advanced logic and implementation structure and effectively addresses common software engineering issues. Additionally, a new interface featuring pull-down menus, mouse …
Neuropsychological Effects Of Short-Term Abstinence In Adolescent Alcoholics, Asiah Mayang
Neuropsychological Effects Of Short-Term Abstinence In Adolescent Alcoholics, Asiah Mayang
Dissertations
The Michigan Neuropsychological Battery (Smith, 1975) was administered to 14 to 17-year-old alcoholics from an inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment center within 7 days of their last drink, and again after 28-33 days of abstinence (a = 26). Comparisons were made between this group and an adolescent alcoholic group who did not abstain and was not receiving treatment for their alcohol abuse (n = 15). The non-abstaining group was also given the same test battery twice. Results indicated that subjects who abstained from drinking (experimental group) performed better than subjects who did not abstain (control group) on measures of …
