Grounding Of Space Structures, Paul A. Bosela, D. G. Fertis, F. J. Shaker Sep 1992

Grounding Of Space Structures, Paul A. Bosela, D. G. Fertis, F. J. Shaker

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Space structures, such as the Space Station solar arrays, must be extremely light-weight, flexible structures. Accurate prediction of the natural frequencies and mode shapes is essential for determining the structural adequacy of components, and designing a controls system. The tension pre-load in the 'blanket' of photovoltaic solar collectors, and the free/free boundary conditions of a structure in space, causes serious reservations on the use of standard finite element techniques of solution. In particular, a phenomenon known as 'grounding', or false stiffening, of the stiffness matrix occurs during rigid body rotation. This paper examines the grounding phenomenon in detail. Numerous stiffness …

Comparative Patterns Of Winter Habitat Use By Muskoxen And Caribou In Northern Alaska, Mark Edward Biddlecomb Sep 1992

Comparative Patterns Of Winter Habitat Use By Muskoxen And Caribou In Northern Alaska, Mark Edward Biddlecomb

Biological Sciences

Snow depth and hardness strongly influenced selection of feeding zones, (i.e., those areas used for foraging), in late winter by both muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) and caribou (Rangifer tarandus grand) in northern Alaska. Snow in feeding zones was shallower and softer than in surrounding zones. Depth of feeding craters was less than the average snow depth in feeding zones. Moist sedge tundra types were used most often by muskoxen, and their diet, based on microhistological analysis of feces, was dominated by graminoids. Moist sedge and Dryas tundra types were most often used by caribou; lichens and evergreen shrubs were the major …

The Anchor, Volume 105.03: September 16, 1992, Hope College

The Anchor: 1992

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Explanation Mode For Bayesian Automatic Object Recognition, Thomas L. Hazlett, Rufus H. Cofer, Harold K. Brown Sep 1992

Explanation Mode For Bayesian Automatic Object Recognition, Thomas L. Hazlett, Rufus H. Cofer, Harold K. Brown

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

One of the more useful techniques to emerge from AI is the provision of an explanation modality used by the researcher to understand and subsequently tune the reasoning of an expert system. Such a capability, missing in the arena of statistical object recognition, is not that difficult to provide. Long standing results show that the paradigm of Bayesian object recognition is truly optimal in a minimum probability of error sense. To a large degree, the Bayesian paradigm achieves optimality through adroit fusion of a wide range of lower informational data sources to give a higher quality decision - a very …

Formal Derivation Of An Error-Detecting Distributed Data Scheduler Using Changeling, Hanan Lutffiya, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Alan Su Sep 1992

Formal Derivation Of An Error-Detecting Distributed Data Scheduler Using Changeling, Hanan Lutffiya, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Alan Su

Computer Science Technical Reports

Distributed database applications are a wide use of distributed systems. One of the major advantages of distributed database systems is the potential for achieving high availability in the presence of faults. Faults must be handled so that the system still operates or operates in a degraded mode. This paper focuses on being able to detect component errors which can lead to system failures in the scheduling part of the lock manager portion of the distributed database system by using embedded executable assertions. Changeling provides a systematic approach, based on the mathematical model of program verification, to deriving executable assertions that …

An Analysis Of Product Metrics In Terms Of Qualitative And Formal Metric Properties, Tuliz Dengi, George Zobrist Sep 1992

An Analysis Of Product Metrics In Terms Of Qualitative And Formal Metric Properties, Tuliz Dengi, George Zobrist

Computer Science Technical Reports

In recent years, the increased concern for developing reliable, cost-efficient software systems has been accompanied by a higher need to analyze and measure software complexity. Numerous metrics have been proposed to measure software complexity and functionality. Yet, testing the validity of these metrics has been a difficult and long process. As an initial test of metric validity, some researchers have suggested the use of formal metric properties so that metrics without a sound theoretical base are rejected right away. This approach has the additional advantage of allowing a reasonable and fair comparison of software metrics.

In this study, a discussion …

An Object-Oriented Approach To Data Exchange Applications: Development Of A Class Library For The Spatial Data Transfer Standard, Phyllis Altheida, John Prater Sep 1992

An Object-Oriented Approach To Data Exchange Applications: Development Of A Class Library For The Spatial Data Transfer Standard, Phyllis Altheida, John Prater

Computer Science Technical Reports

The object-orienced paradigm embodies a set of concepts that differentiates it from process-oriented and data-oriented methods. Among che commonly included principles are object, class, encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism. The synergism of the concepts creates a powerful and new perspective that can be applied to all phases of systems development. Application developers need to try out the object-oriented languages, methodologies and development tools to help define its niche. The problem domain of data transfer standards is used to test the applicability of object-oriented techniques. Data transfer standards have three levels of abstraction: conceptual, logical, and format. The Spatial Data Transfer Standard …
