[Review Of] Elsie Clews Parsons. American Indian Life, Laurie Lisa
[Review Of] Elsie Clews Parsons. American Indian Life, Laurie Lisa
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In Joan Mark's introduction to the Bison edition of this classic work, she offers a good analysis of the impact of these twenty-seven fictional stories written by anthropologists and first published in 1922. Anthropology's radical change in methodology at the turn of the century -- of which Parsons and Franz Boas (twenty of these stories can be identified with Boasian anthropology) were noticeable figures in the transformation -- led Parsons to attempt to tackle the problem of the relation of the individual to the culture. Consequently, she asked her fellow anthropologists to write fictions about Native Americans in which they …
[Review Of] Jack Weatherford. Native Roots: How The Indians Enriched America, David M. Gradwohl
[Review Of] Jack Weatherford. Native Roots: How The Indians Enriched America, David M. Gradwohl
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This volume and Weatherford's penultimate book (Indian Givers: How the Indians of the Americas Transformed the World, New York: Fawcett Columbine, 1988) discuss in detail the contributions of Native American populations to the Old World and to the culture of the invaders who ultimately conquered the New World. Both books are timely in terms of the current hoopla concerning the quincentennial of Christopher Columbus's arrival on Caribbean shores. They both put the lie to the idea that acculturation is a one-way street. Native Roots additionally indicates the tenacity of many American Indian traditions in surviving centuries of attempts at forced …

[Review Of] Vernon J. Williams. From A Caste To A Minority: Changing Attitudes Of American Sociologists Towards Afro-Americans, Cary D. Wintz
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Attitudes towards specific racial minorities have been central to the history of the United States. These attitudes have influenced the development of social and cultural institutions, they have determined the structure of our communities, and they have affected our laws and our politics. Given the centrality of race in American culture, it is surprising that until the second half of the twentieth century there was little effort to examine systematically the role of race in US history, or to examine changing attitudes towards race; and the efforts that were made rarely made it into the mainstream of American historiography.
[Review Of] Julie Cruikshank. In Collaboration With Angela Sidney. Kitty Smith. And Annie Ned. Life Lived Like A Story: Life Stories Of Three Yukon Native Elders, Laurie Lisa
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Life Lived Like a Story, a volume in the American Indian Lives Series, contains the transcribed autobiographies of three women of the Yukon: Angela Sidney, Kitty Smith, and Annie Ned. In her introduction, Cruikshank states that the book is "based on the premise that life-history investigation provides a model for research." To meet this goal, Cruikshank's methodology depended upon ongoing collaborations between interviewer and interviewees. The three remarkable women who share their life stories in this volume were all raised on the inland side of the high country frontier separating coastal Tlingit and interior Athapaskans; all can claim both Athapaskan …

Intellectual Authority And Institutional Authority, Charles W. Collier
Intellectual Authority And Institutional Authority, Charles W. Collier
UF Law Faculty Publications
This is an essay about the power of ideas and the influence of institutions.
What Gibbon termed the pure. "force of persuasion," unaided and unhindered by institutional context, I refer to as "intellectual authority." This has been defined as "the authority exerted by arguments that make their way simply by virtue of a superior rationality and do not depend for their impact on the lines of power and influence operating in an institution." The contrastive notion of "institutional authority" refers to the nonintellectual influence exerted by social, political, cultural, historical, legal, literary, educational, religious, and other institutions. The nonintellectual influence …
Remote Area Nursing In Western Australia: An Examination Of A Conceptual Model For Practice, Anne Magee
Remote Area Nursing In Western Australia: An Examination Of A Conceptual Model For Practice, Anne Magee
Theses : Honours
The intent of this research was to explore the phenomenon of remote area nursing in relation to a theoretical framework, the SUN Conceptual Model. A Theory-Research-Theory strategy was chosen in order to modify, refine or redevelop the model. Using a descriptive, interpretive design, a sample of eight Remote Area Nurses (RANs) in Western Australia were asked to describe their experiences of remote area nursing. The data were collected by telephone interview. Themes were extrapolated and categorised according to key concepts of the previously developed model. Common components of significant statements were identified in order to gain understanding of the meanings …

Mass Dependent Loss Of Resolution In Radially Inhomogeneous Exb Ion Traps, Mark A. Capron, Susan S. Haskin, Curtiss D. Hanson
Mass Dependent Loss Of Resolution In Radially Inhomogeneous Exb Ion Traps, Mark A. Capron, Susan S. Haskin, Curtiss D. Hanson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
ExB ion traps, such as Fourier transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance mass spectrometers (FY:ICR), mass analyze sample ions based on differences in their cyclotron frequencies in a homogeneous magnetic field. The high resolution mass measurements of FT-ICR are based on the relationship between the frequency of the cyclotron orbit and the mass-to-charge (m/q) ratio of an ion. Both the orbit and the frequency/mass relationship result from the radial forces on the ion. Ions trapped by inhomogeneous electric fields experience different magnitudes of the radial electric fields at different positions resulting in a positionally dependent frequency. Such differences in orbital frequencies for …
Worker Participation In Health And Safety Regulation: Lessons From Sweden, Eric Tucker
Worker Participation In Health And Safety Regulation: Lessons From Sweden, Eric Tucker
Articles & Book Chapters
The toll capitalist production takes on the lives and health of workers has been, and continues to be one of its least acceptable features. For this reason, the labour movement and political parties seeking labour's support have often made reform of occupational health and safety regulation a major objective. In recent years, for example, the New Democratic Party in Ontario has vociferously criticized the failures of the governments of the day to protect adequately the workers in the province. Their recent electoral success provides a great opportunity to improve the work environment and to strengthen the ability of the labour …
Law Schools, The Justice Mission, And Bob Mckay, John Sexton
Law Schools, The Justice Mission, And Bob Mckay, John Sexton
Cleveland State Law Review
The general points I make link to the justice mission of law schools. We must produce people prepared to practice at the very highest levels; and we must produce the kind of detached thinking that one associates with a great research institution. Most of us were educated in the system created by Langdell: the casebook method. It is startling that Langdell's method enjoys the pervasive dominance of legal education that it does. The notion of a static corpus juris which provided the foundation upon which Langdell built his model is impossible to maintain. Another general observation, the demographics of our …

The Waccamaw-Richmond Hill Waterfront Project 1991: Laurel Hill Barge No. 2., Lynn Harris
Research Manuscript Series
The purpose of this multi-year project is to conduct historical and archaeological research in the waterfront area of the three Georgetown area plantation sites – Richmond Hill, Laurel Hill and Wachesaw. This season of work was devoted to recording a large barge located in proximity to Laurel Hill. The primary goal was to document architectural features which would reflect the carpentry techniques used by the builders and the possible function of the vessel. Limited surface artifact sampling was conducted to provide some insights into activities and date ranges associated with the local riverine area. This project was also intended as …
Feminist Theory And Legal Practice: A Case Study On Unemployment Compensation Benefits And The Male Norm, Deborah Maranville
Feminist Theory And Legal Practice: A Case Study On Unemployment Compensation Benefits And The Male Norm, Deborah Maranville
UC Law Journal
This Essay explores the application of two key insights of feminist theory to practice. First, the law is often structured to fit male life patterns in a way that creates unstated male norms which are mistaken as inevitable or natural. Second, these male norms often disadvantage women. A recent unemployment compensation case handled in the University of Washington Civil Law Clinic illustrates these insights.
The clinic challenged the denial of unemployment benefits to a client who sought only part-time work so she could care for her special needs child. Initially, feminist theory provided a basis for recognizing and challenging the …
Parasitology As An Interpretive Tool In Archaeology, Karl J. Reinhard
Parasitology As An Interpretive Tool In Archaeology, Karl J. Reinhard
Karl Reinhard Publications
Parasitological studies of archaeological sites can be used to interpret past behavior and living conditions. During the 1980s problem-oriented research into prehistoric- and historical-period parasitism developed and resulted in thefield of archaeoparasitology. Archaeoparasitology attempts to integrate parasite data into archaeological theory and interpretation. Within the last decade, four major archaeoparasitological laboratories emerged. They developed interpretive frameworks that apply parasitological data to a remarkable variety of prehistoric behaviors. Parasite remains can be used to reconstruct aspects of diet, health, and other behaviors such as transhumance and trade. Finally. analysis of the distribution of parasite remains can be used to interpret aspects …

The Persistence Of Bandhani Production In Barmer, Rajasthan, India, Mary Ann Fitzgerald
The Persistence Of Bandhani Production In Barmer, Rajasthan, India, Mary Ann Fitzgerald
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
In Barmer, Rajasthan, India, traditional alizarin and alizarin-indigo cotton bandhani1 (tie-dye) garments are produced and distributed to rural populations. The producers of these garments are the Khatri, traditional Hindu dyers and weavers of cotton and silk, while the garments are purchased and worn by Sindhi Muslims and the Hindu Khumbhar women. Thus, the producers and consumers are socially distinct groups. This historical association between producers and consumers has created a tradition of bandhani production that is currently threatened by the introduction of inexpensive screen-printed textiles.
There are two aspects of this traditional bandhani production that may play an important …

The Nwagu Aneke Igbo Script: Its Origins, Features And Potentials As A Medium Of Alternative Literacy In African Languages, Chukwuma Azuonye
Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series
The present paper is a study of the origins, features and significance of the Nwagu Aneke Igbo Syllabary (otherwise known as the Umuleri Igbo Script), one of the thirty or so indigenous systems of writing which (re-)emerged in West Africa during the colonial period as a medium for challenging alien cultural values and for the re-assertion of the superiority of African spiritual and moral traditions and of the thought-patterns which lie behind them. Beyond the claims of a one-time prosperous land-owner and diviner, the late Ogbuevi Nwagu Aneke of the village of Umuleri in the Anambra Local Government Area of …

Beads In The Lives Of The Peoples Of Southern Togo, West Africa, Pascale Nourisson
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Beads are objects of infinite diversity among the Mina-Guen of southern Togo. They accompany the people in all the material and spiritual aspects of their existence. However, while the beads serve such varied functions as ornaments, currency and emblems of wealth and prestige, they find their principal use in voodoo.

This article reviews the different kinds of drawn and wound glass beads that have found broad acceptance in west-central Cameroon and discusses their diverse applications. Beads of other materials, as well as cowries and buttons, are also dealt with.
Interpreting Sacred Texts: Preliminary Reflections On Constitutional Discourse In China, Janet E. Ainsworth
Interpreting Sacred Texts: Preliminary Reflections On Constitutional Discourse In China, Janet E. Ainsworth
UC Law Journal
The 1982 Constitution of the People's Republic of China provides the foundation for a nation governed by the rule of law rather than by Party fiat. It remains unclear whether and to what extent this ambitious Constitution will be implemented in practice. In her Article, Professor Ainsworth asserts that the way in which Western scholars to date have analyzed Chinese constitutions demonstrates the ethnocentric assumptions inherent in Western scholarship.
Professor Ainsworth suggests that Chinese constitutional discourse needs to be understood in a Chinese context, requiring a historical study of the traditional Chinese exegetical methodology used in interpreting the Confucian Classics. …
Beyond Cut Flowers: Developing A Clinical Perspective On Critical Legal Theory, Phyllis Goldfarb
Beyond Cut Flowers: Developing A Clinical Perspective On Critical Legal Theory, Phyllis Goldfarb
UC Law Journal
In her Essay Professor Goldfarb examines the relationship between clinical legal education and critical legal theory. She highlights the resemblances between the two movements while elaborating a clinical educator's perspective on and critique of some of the ideas associated with critical legal studies.
As the heirs to different versions of legal realism--critical legal studies being associated with "rule skepticism," and clinical legal education with "fact skepticism"-both are engaged in a project of theoretical deconstruction. For each the goal of this project is to generate a climate favorable to social change. Professor Goldfarb, however, argues that much of the cls perspective, …
Disabled Clients, Disabling Lawyers, Anthony V. Alfieri
Disabled Clients, Disabling Lawyers, Anthony V. Alfieri
UC Law Journal
People with disabilities, especially the impoverished among them, have long been the object of legal advocacy. In the rush of advocacy, lawyers have forgotten that the concept of the disabled, like the concept of the poor, is an artifact of American law and society. It is a thing mediated through ideals and discourses, a thing constructed rather than naturally or necessarily given. The social construction of disability occurs in the daily practices of advocacy, administration, and adjudication. These material practices form the dominant and subordinate visions of the disabled.
The dominant vision of the disabled conjures images of dependence, incompetence, …
