Psychology, David E. Leary Jan 1992

Psychology, David E. Leary

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although the discipline of psychology, in its contemporary form, is only a century old, psychology's historical antecedents reach back to the beginnings of civilization. Whether defined as the study of the soul or the study of human faculties, as it was in earlier times, or as the study of consciousness, mind, or behavior, as it has been over the past hundred years, psychology has dealt with some of the fundamental questions and issues pertaining to the functions, processes, and mechanisms of human and animal nature.

Incestuous Wharton: A Consideration Of The Theme, Laura Kathleen Mcbride Jan 1992

Incestuous Wharton: A Consideration Of The Theme, Laura Kathleen Mcbride

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nineteenth century anthropologists had identified the development of incest taboos as the dividing line between savage and civilized human beings. Sigmund Freud expanded on these early anthropological notions of incest in identifying incestuous desire at the heart of human sexuality; In The Reef and Summer, Wharton toys with these scientific ideas about incest; the radically different way that Summer incorporates incestuous tension echoes Freud's more complex assumptions. In The Reef, Anna Leath upholds social order by rejecting her own sexuality. In refusing to marry Darrow, she takes a stand against the destabilizing forces of incestuous longing but loses her own …

A Comparative Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains From Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, And Kayenta Anasazi Archaeological Sites, Heidi Roberts

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Human skeletal remains from the prehistoric Parowan Fremont, Virgin Anasazi, and Kayenta Anasazi cultural traditions are examined, to quantify differences in skeletal parameters and burial practices. Statistical comparisons show no significant differences in skeletal metric traits among the 125 individuals studied; While most individuals examined were healthy, the prevalence of periostitis, osteitis, and linear enamel hypoplasia was found to be highest among Virgin Anasazi individuals. Two other pathologies, porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia, were most common among the Kayenta sample and least among the Parowan Fremont sample; From literature review and new data, much variability was found in mortuary practices. …

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith Jan 1992

Attitudes Toward International Harmonization Efforts: A Cross-Cultural Study., M. Aileen Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The last two decades have seen a significant increase in the number and size of multinational corporations and a growing global investment environment. Linked to that growth has been a call for standards that produce accounting information that is capable of crossing national boundaries. One of the groups of professional elites that have addressed the call for harmonized international accounting standards is the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC). The IASC objective (IASC 1988, 1) states that it will "work generally for the improvement and harmonization of regulations, accounting standards and procedures ... " To address such a goal, the IASC …

(2) Is there an alteration of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during their student teaching semester? (3) What factors appear to influence student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during …

Clinical Scholarship And The Justice Mission, Robert D. Dinerstein Jan 1992

Clinical Scholarship And The Justice Mission, Robert D. Dinerstein

Cleveland State Law Review

To many people, the relationship between clinical programs and the justice mission of American law schools is so clear as to be self-evident. These programs may pursue justice on behalf of individual clients or for groups of clients through class-action or other impact litigation. Moreover, clinical teachers frequently discuss with their students the need for the latter to serve justice in their legal careers, whether as the principal focus of their legal work or through pro bono publico activities. Indeed, for many law students, the law clinic may be the only place in which concerns about justice are discussed and, …

An Art-Historical Paradigm For Investigating Native American Pictographs Of The Lower Pecos Region, Texas, John Antoine Labadie Jan 1992

An Art-Historical Paradigm For Investigating Native American Pictographs Of The Lower Pecos Region, Texas, John Antoine Labadie

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In the shadows of deep canyons in Southwest Texas and Northern Mexico, where the Pecos, Devils, and Rio Grande flow, are thousands of paintings on the walls of hundreds of rockshelters and overhangs. Archaeologists term such works "pictographic rock art." These particular pictographs were created over many centuries by Native American groups known collectively today as the Lower Pecos Region cultures.

[Review Of] Rosalio Moises, Jane Holden Kelley, And William Curry Holden. A Yaqui Life: The Personal Chronicle Of A Yaqui Indian, Raymond A. Bucko Jan 1992

[Review Of] Rosalio Moises, Jane Holden Kelley, And William Curry Holden. A Yaqui Life: The Personal Chronicle Of A Yaqui Indian, Raymond A. Bucko

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The search for an "untouched" Native voice in American Indian autobiography, both experientially and stylistically, has proven as elusive as the search for the "untouched" Native. In the case of A Yaqui Life, it is precisely the of the native author's interaction-personal, literary, military, economic, religious, and familial-that makes the work both fascinating and significant. So, too, the text as a product of the interactions between the various authors enhances its ethnographic and historic significance. In 1954, at the suggestion of the anthropologist W. C. Holden, the core of the work was penned by Rosalio Moises, a Yaqui who lived …

[Review Of] Douglas Monroy. Thrown Among Strangers: The Making Of Mexican Culture In Frontier California, Carlos F. Ortega Jan 1992

[Review Of] Douglas Monroy. Thrown Among Strangers: The Making Of Mexican Culture In Frontier California, Carlos F. Ortega

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

As one drives through the state of California, the legacy of Indian, Spanish, and Mexican cultures is obvious everywhere. In school, children learn how this land fell into the hands of the Spanish Crown with its mission system starting to bring Christianity to the Indians, how California became Mexican via the independence movement, and finally in the nineteenth century, how the United States came to control California. Yet little is known or understood about what the transfer of power meant or how it occurred.

[Review Of] Elsie Clews Parsons. American Indian Life, Laurie Lisa Jan 1992

[Review Of] Elsie Clews Parsons. American Indian Life, Laurie Lisa

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In Joan Mark's introduction to the Bison edition of this classic work, she offers a good analysis of the impact of these twenty-seven fictional stories written by anthropologists and first published in 1922. Anthropology's radical change in methodology at the turn of the century -- of which Parsons and Franz Boas (twenty of these stories can be identified with Boasian anthropology) were noticeable figures in the transformation -- led Parsons to attempt to tackle the problem of the relation of the individual to the culture. Consequently, she asked her fellow anthropologists to write fictions about Native Americans in which they …
