The "Poison Porridge" Case: Chinese And The Administration Of Justice In Early Saskatchewan, Ken Leyton Brown Jan 1992

The "Poison Porridge" Case: Chinese And The Administration Of Justice In Early Saskatchewan, Ken Leyton Brown

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

On the morning of 8 August 1907 a number of patrons were taking breakfast in the Capital Restaurant on Lome Street in Regina. The restaurant had not been in operation long but was apparently doing a good business, so it must have been somewhat disturbing to Mr. Steele, the owner and manager, when shortly after beginning their morning meal a number of his patrons became ill. The symptoms included quite severe abdominal pains so the decision was taken to send for a doctor who arrived to find nine people suffering from what was obviously something rather more serious than indigestion. …

Review Of The Enduring Indians Of Kansas: A Century And A Half Of Acculturation, James A. Clifton Jan 1992

Review Of The Enduring Indians Of Kansas: A Century And A Half Of Acculturation, James A. Clifton

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In a region as well mapped and paved as Kansas Indian studies, anyone promising better roads to improved understanding faces large obstacles. The author pledges himself to a "true picture" of certain Kansas Indians as "multidimensional human beings," one that shows how they "strategically utilized their syncretic cultures in order to survive in a hostile Kansas." If not obvious, the latter statement is conceptual garbage, while the story he tells is everything but multidimensional. On the contrary, what this author does is to impose on the historical record his own version of the currently popular, orthodox Indian Story: his "enduring …

Objectivity In The Interpretation Of The Archaeology Of Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1992

Objectivity In The Interpretation Of The Archaeology Of Ghana, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the desires of the majority of archaeologists is to obtain from their analyses an objective knowledge of the societies they study. However, the mere desire to obtain objectivity does not ensure its attainment especially where biases cannot be controlled. Added to this difficulty of obtaining objectivity is that not only is the subject matter of archaeology vast and varied, but also archaeologists disagree on directions of study and interpretations, and in many cases very few scholars attempt to put themselves at a standpoint from which to measure the inadequacies and unevenness of their interpretations. Fundamental to interpretations in …

The Invisible Discourse Of The Law: Reflections On Legal Literacy And General Education, James Boyd White Jan 1992

The Invisible Discourse Of The Law: Reflections On Legal Literacy And General Education, James Boyd White

Book Chapters

Almost everyone who is not trained in the law has struggled to understand legal documents, such as contracts and guarantees - not because they read poorly but because they lack legal knowledge and experience with legal language. Readers can experience the same difficulty in other fields such as philosophy, literary theory, or economics; it takes time to gain the knowledge required to become an expert reader in these areas. However, between the extremes of the trained legal expert and the complete novice is "another possible meaning of legal literacy: the degree of competence in legal discourse that is required for …

Wife Abuse And The Political System: A Middle Eastern Case Study, Mary E. Hegland Jan 1992

Wife Abuse And The Political System: A Middle Eastern Case Study, Mary E. Hegland

Faculty Publications

Although wife abuse is common in Iran, it is a subject which has received almost no attention from scholars and little has been written on it. The purpose of this article is to examine the problem, to show the connection between wife-beating and the Iranian political system, and to raise questions for further research. The data on which this analysis is based come from my own research as well as from published sources. The two case histories of wife abuse presented exemplify social process in a political system characterized by arbitrariness and the need to dominate. The degree to which …

Necklace Radio Transmitter Attachment For Pheasants, Terry Z. Riley, Bruce A. Fistler Jan 1992

Necklace Radio Transmitter Attachment For Pheasants, Terry Z. Riley, Bruce A. Fistler

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We tested a pre-assembled, necklace-radio-transmitter-attachment design on female ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in northern Iowa. Birds were captured by nightlighting and bait trapping between September 1989 and March 1990. Radio transmitters were attached to 128 using a wire necklace. Two birds had problems adapting to the necklace, and 3 birds removed them. Twenty-three birds were still alive and wearing necklaces at the end of the study, for an average of 318 (SD= ± 52) days. Ease of attachment, long durability, light weight, and minimal bulk make the necklace an effective alternative to harness and poncho mounts.

Book Review: Landforms Of Iowa, Michael L. Thompson Jan 1992

Book Review: Landforms Of Iowa, Michael L. Thompson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Many of us are interested in the landscape around us. We ask: Why is this hill so steep or why is that valley so wide? Why does my garden's soil have so much clay? Why does Iowa have no mountains' Landforms of Iowa should capture a broad audience of teachers, students, agriculturalists of all sorts, historians, homemakers, naturalists, botanists, biologists, foresters, geographers, civil engineers, as well as geologists and pedologists-in short, just about any Iowan who has ever wondered how and when the landscape at his or her doorstep or outside the car window was fashioned. Its stated purposes are …

This Article considers some of the uses of counterfactuals in the law. Counterfactuals are a type of conditional statement. Conditional statements express the idea that something is or will be the case (the consequent), provided that some other situation is realized (the antecedent). Conditionals often take the form "if p then q", Counterfactuals are conditionals in which the author expresses the knowledge or belief that the antecedent is false.

Fifty Years Of Fisheries Management M An Obstinate Prairie Lake, Dennis L. Scarnecchia, James R. Wahl Jan 1992

Fifty Years Of Fisheries Management M An Obstinate Prairie Lake, Dennis L. Scarnecchia, James R. Wahl

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Little Wall Lake, a shallow 104 ha glacial lake in Hamilton County, Iowa, has been manipulated for about 50 years by fishery managers in an attempt to provide a stable sport fishery. Managers have used dredging, water level manipulation, aquatic vegetation control, mechanical fish removal and fish eradication with toxicants, sport fish stocking, introduction of piscivorous fish, artificial habitat structures, and winter aeration. Attempts to stabilize the fishery have been unsuccessful, and because of overpopulation and stunting of panfishes, total fish eradications were conducted in 1977 and 1989. We review the history of management efforts on the lake, and suggest …
