Experience-Based Dialogues In Secondary English-As-A-Second-Language Classrooms, Carlina V. Lobos Jan 1992

Experience-Based Dialogues In Secondary English-As-A-Second-Language Classrooms, Carlina V. Lobos

All Graduate Projects

An informal study was conducted to explore the effectiveness of experience-based dialogues in the promotion of oral language use in secondary-level English-As-A-Second-Language classrooms. The twenty-one dialogues field-tested in the project were developed interactively, by teacher and students, in the sociocognitive context of each of the learner's background knowledge, experience and immediate communication needs. Experience-based dialogues are a method of language teaching and learning that focuses on the communicative act rather than on isolated or discrete grammatical items. An overview of the results of the informal study was presented here. Strategies for teachers to develop and implement, using this approach, were …

[Review Of] Raymond 1. Demallie And Douglas R. Parks. Eds. Sioux Indian Religion: Tradition And Innovation, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Most of the papers included in this anthology were presented in Bismarck in 1982 at a conference entitled "American Indian Religion in the Dakotas: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives." The conference was funded by the North Dakota Humanities Council and brought together a wide array of academicians and lay people representing different and sometimes conflicting experiential and philosophical points of view.

[Review Of] Roy Harvey Pearce. Savagism And Civilization: A Study Of The Indian And The American Mind. Rev. Ed. Of The Savages Of America, D. C. Cole

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This classic volume on the image of the Indian in the American mind first appeared in 1953. Although both limited and incomplete, Pearce's work compelled a virtual revolution in literary and historical approaches to analysis of public view concerning the role of Indians in the American past.

[Review Of] Susheila Nasta, Ed. Motherlands: Black Women's Writing From Africa, The Caribbean And South Asia, Opal Palmer Adisa

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In recent years writings by black women outside of the US have gained acceptance, and many such works have been included in syllabi. Motherlands provides critical, comparative analyses of several important black women (Asian women are included in this category) writing throughout the world, and as such, sets a precedent as it is probably the first such collection. Divided into three sections, Mothers/Daughters/Mother(land), the essays examine writers who have become icons, Bessie Head, Jean Rhys, Flora Nwapa, Buchi Emecheta, Nawal el Sa' adawi, Michelle Cliff, Joan Riley, Lorna Goodison, and Nayantara Sahgal. Some of the essays, however, explore use of …

[Review Of] St. Clair Drake. Black Folk Here And There , Vol. I, Bamidele J. Bracy, Jean E. Daniels

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

St. Clair Drake, the recently deceased anthropologist, has written an elaborate "summary essay" on the black experience as it relates to the continent of Africa. In his latter years at Stanford University, Drake was head of the University's Black Studies program. It appears obvious that Drake's consciousness was raised during this particular time span. The research and writing of this book is far different from his seminal work with Clayton (Black Metropolis, 1945). In his "emeritus" years, Drake decided to seek the high ground of an historical anthropological-philosopher and address certain issues that W.E.B. DuBois considered paramount to the study …

The Jurisprudence Of Genetics, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss, Dorothy Nelkin Jan 1992

The Jurisprudence Of Genetics, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss, Dorothy Nelkin

Faculty Articles

Our focus is on the impact of genetic research on traditional legal concepts. Genetics has profoundly altered the perception of personhood within our culture. This change has, in turn, challenged many of the core principles on which current norms are based and has compelled lawmakers to reconsider the legal rules that mediate the relationships among persons and between individuals and the broader community. Thus, we see this research as influencing not only the factual answers available to the decisionmaking process, but also the questions that are framed and the terms that are used in the debate.

Geology Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii, R. G. Baker Jan 1992

Geology Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii, R. G. Baker

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Fens are peatlands which are dependent on groundwater discharge to provide nutrient enrichment. Fens are found in a variety of landscape positions and in most Iowa landform regions. This paper presents a classification system for Iowa fens based on landscape position, stratigraphy, and hydrologic factors. Iowa fens can be separated into six categories: 1) fens along valley wall slopes; the groundwater source for these fens is sand and gravel buried between glacial tills (inter-till); 2) fens in hummocky topography on the northwestern margin of the Des Moines Lobe landform region; the water source is sand and gravel buried within glacial …

The University Of Iowa Museum Of Natural History: An Historical Perspective, George D. Shrimper Jan 1992

The University Of Iowa Museum Of Natural History: An Historical Perspective, George D. Shrimper

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The 132-year record of UIMNH essentially mirrors historical and on-going trends in related institutions. As scholarship grew in the natural sciences during the 19th century, natural history museums became centers for scientific research. A "Golden Age" of museum-based expeditionary work and taxonomic research was marked at UI by the careers of curator/naturalists Calvin, Nutting, Macbride, and Shimek. Systematic biology and paleontology thrived with the accumulation of extensive collections. De-emphasis of "natural history" studies followed after 1920-30 with a concomitant growth in cellular and molecular biology. In seeking new directions and financial support, many museums, including UIMNH, shifted emphasis to public …

Crime And Punishment In New Hampshire, 1812-1914 (Volumes I And Ii), Timothy Dodge Jan 1992

Crime And Punishment In New Hampshire, 1812-1914 (Volumes I And Ii), Timothy Dodge

Doctoral Dissertations

Changing definitions of crime accompanied the economic transformation of seacoast New Hampshire from a predominently agricultural, and rural society in 1812 to one that was mainly industrial, commercial, and urban by 1914. This dissertation analyzes a sample of 820 felony incarcerations (19.5%) of the total 4154 incarcerations recorded at the New Hampshire State Prison for the period 1812-1914. Court bills and indictments of Rockingham and Strafford County, New Hampshire are used to analyze felony convictions. Quantitative analysis involving 17 variables reveals that property crime was the most common conviction. Felony conviction rates per 100,000 population nearly doubled between 1812 and …

Review Of Gennans In The New World: Essays In The History Of Immigration, Jorg Nagler Jan 1992

Review Of Gennans In The New World: Essays In The History Of Immigration, Jorg Nagler

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This book is a collection of nine essays Frederick C. Luebke published between 1965 and 1985 and one essay specifically written for this volume dealing with German-American historiography of the last decades. The essays-including revisions and addenda-reflect Luebke's impressive contribution to the social, political, and cultural history of German Americans and provide an overview of the substantial German immigration to the United States. The essays also delineate Luebke's changing focus from the Great Plains and Midwest of the nineteenth century to an enlarged nationwide perspective of Germans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. To go even beyond this agenda, Luebke …

Review Of Pipe, Bible, And Peyote Among The Oglala Sioux: A Study In Religious Identity, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith Jan 1992

Review Of Pipe, Bible, And Peyote Among The Oglala Sioux: A Study In Religious Identity, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Pipe, Bible, and Peyote among the Oglala Sioux is a republication of a 1980 manuscript published in the Stockholm Studies in Comparative Religion. Steinmetz, a Jesuit priest, spent twenty years (1961-1981) on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where he served as clergyman and participated, observed, and reflected on the unique constellation of modem Lakota religion. Steinmetz outlines the complexity of different religious identities among the Sioux, to include: the traditional "pure" non-acculturative beliefs and its practitioners, reflected in the American Indian Movement's political emphasis on a return to indigenous practices; "Ecumenist I," designating Lakota Christians who practice both …
