The Mohawk Glass Trade Bead Chronology: Ca. 1560-1785, Donald A. Rumrill

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Early glass beads acquired by the Mohawk Indians of New York state were a mixture of whatever was made available to them by European traders. By the second quarter of the 17th century, the beads reflected a dominance of particular types and/or colors as villages were relocated. This phenomenon appears to have ritualistic connotations and suggests that the bead-selection process was a part of the ceremonialism practiced in the daily, seasonal and annual life modes of the Mohawk. Professor Louis Frederick Edward Goldie died suddenly of a heart attack on January 12, 1991 at the age of seventy-two. Professor Goldie's death deprives the world's legal community of one of its most outstanding scholars and is a grievous personal loss to his students and colleagues at the Syracuse University College of Law. Professor Goldie specialized in teaching the international law of the sea, international environmental and resources law, boundaries and zones, and treaties under the United States Constitution.

Christenson, in the annual FARMS lecture deliverd on 27 February 1991, examined the Maya New Year's harvest festival, perhaps the most important public festival of the year. The festival coincided with the main corn harvest in mid-November and served as the New Year's Day of the solar calendar, when kingship was renewed. The 1982 Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III) has given states jurisdiction over unprecedented scopes of ocean space. Marine scientific research is among the activities under coastal state control. This thesis examines five possible areas of impact of coastal state control on United States research programs. Emp Protection Validation Testing Approaches, George Baker

Selected Works

Integrated, operational system-level testing is required for confidence in any system's EMP hardness. Validation is not possible by analysis or inspection. Test capabilities exist to validate the EMP protection of properly designed systems. High-level free field simulators are the means of choice for testing aircraft and ground mobile systems. A combination of low level continuous wave and pulsed current injection testing are preferred for testing fixed facilities and systems connected to long line networks.

Reservation Leadership And The Progressive-Traditional Dichotomy: William Wash And The Northern Utes, 1865-1928, Davis Rich Lewis

History Faculty Publications

In the early twentieth century, Indian Bureau officials noted an increasing incidence of tribal factionalism parallel to changes in Indian reservation leadership. They described this factionalism in terms of a progressive-traditional dichotomy. Modern scholars have unintentionally fallen into this semantic trap. This article explores the complexity of individual motivations and factional politics among the Northern Utes through the life of William Wash and suggests that such cultural middlemen offer a more complete picture of reservation politics.
