Red Cross Nursing In World War I: North Dakota Women's Response To The Call To Serve, Beverly Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

North Dakota women served in the United States Army and Navy Nurse Corps during World War I as Red Cross Reserve nurses. In 1935 the North Dakota American Legion Auxiliary collected and compiled, in manuscript form, brief biographies of these women and placed the manuscript at the North Dakota State Library in Bismarck. This paper is an attempt to describe the circumstances surrounding North Dakota nurses' participation in World War I.

The Red Cross Nursing Service Committee was the primary agency recruiting and training nurses. Numerous books, nursing journals, newspaper accounts, and magazine articles about Red Cross nursing were read. …

But the task that Alice Callin and Tim O'Meara have assigned me bears upon a different question, one that Mr. O'Meara framed in this manner: Should the church foster learning that is on the face of it secular? Some time ago I received a phone call from a young Jewish progressive thinker inviting me to give a short reflection at a gathering commemorating the eighth anniversary of the massacres at the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila in West Beirut, Lebanon. These massacres took place in September 1982, after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. and claimed at least 800 lives: the actual death toll may have been considerably higher.

The full account of the events and the motives which led up to the United States' savage attack on Iraq remains to be told. And further evidence unfolds almost daily. A key actor in this story was U.S. Ambassador to Baghdad, April Glaspie. The State Department "instructed" her to hold a "conversation" with the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on March 21, 1991. It must be emphasized that she was "instructed" not to give sworn testimony — nor provide requested documents, diplomatic cables, etc. — to the Foreign Relations Committee. The Effects Of Social Support On The Psychological Adjustment Of Navy Wives Experiencing Deployment, Marci A. Harris

The military, particularly a Navy deployment, provides unique challenges and stresses to the military family. The present study investigated the effects of social support on the psychological well-being of Navy wives experiencing spousal deployment. Sixty-three Navy wives in the Tidewater, Virginia area completed questionnaires on depression, self-esteem, and daily stress, as well as on the size of and satisfaction with affective and instrumental support. Assessments were made before, during, and after the deployment. Results of stepwise regressions showed that satisfaction with various aspects of social support significantly (p < .05) predicted levels of depression, self-esteem, and daily stress at all three phases of deployment. Results also showed that psychological wellbeing was lowest at middeployment. Findings demonstrate the importance of developing satisfactory social support systems prior to, during, and after deployment.

J. Robert Oppenheimer played a highly visible role in the development of nuclear weapons policy for the United States. He was very influential in President Harry S. Truman's Administration after the Second World War. Following the Soviet Union's first atomic bomb blast in August 1949, Oppenheimer became out of step with those who made nuclear weapons policy. He continued to give advice on disarmament issues. In 1953, the first year of Dwight D. Eisenhower's Administration, Oppenheimer questioned the utility of the Superpower's nuclear arms build up, particularly the hydrogen bomb, while leaving the American people ignorant of the impact such …

The viability of the Confederacy depended on its ability to organize a government and military defense force. Two early concerns were the operation of Gosport Naval Shipyard and protection of the Confederate capital at Richmond. Poised between them was Fortress Monroe.

With undisputed Union mastery of the Chesapeake Bay, Fortress Monroe was a constant reminder of the tentative security of these critical points. The man chosen to protect the Peninsula was Virginian, John Bankhead Magruder. Less than one year later, his efforts were denigrated by Commanding General Joseph E. Johnston who wanted to pursue his own strategic plan.

Effects Of Resistance Strategies On Rape, Janice M. Zoucha-Jensen

To determine what was the most effective resistance strategy to avoid rape and the relationship of resistance to additional physical injury, data were examined from 179 sexual assault police report forms. Data were gathered from June 1, 1988 to May 31, 1989 in Omaha, Nebraska. Victims under the age of 13, male victims, incest cases and assaults avoided due entirely to outside intervention were excluded from this study. 115 of the 179 were raped and 64 were rape avoiders. A total of 103 of the 179 were treated in a local hospital emergency rooms. None of the injuries resulted in …
