The Development Of A Recruitment Program For Flight Faculty At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, John E. Phipps
The Development Of A Recruitment Program For Flight Faculty At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, John E. Phipps
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is a private institution offering graduate and undergraduate degree programs in aviation related fields. Members of the staff of Embry-Riddle's Flight Technology Department were concerned about the department's continued ability to attract sufficient quantities of qualified applicants for flight industry faculty positions given current trends in the industry. In response to those concerns a comprehensive plan for the recruitment of flight faculty was developed to meet both present and future departmental needs.
The research question investigated as a part of this developmental project was what steps need to be taken to ensure that Embry-Riddle is able to …
A Comparison Of Decision-Making Variables Used By Dual-Career Couples, Margaret K. Conrad
A Comparison Of Decision-Making Variables Used By Dual-Career Couples, Margaret K. Conrad
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The increasing number of households transitioning from traditional oneworker families to dual-career families has created complex issues for the individual, the family, employers, and society in general. Learning more about how these dual-career couples make decisions will help provide a better capability to tailor counseling needs to these individuals, as well as guide policy for employers. This study examined 115 dual-career spouses from four different occupational groups: Air Force, Army, Navy, and civilian organizations. The participants consisted of 54 husbands and 61 wives who completed a questionnaire designed for this study. The survey measured 12 decision-making variables identified in a …
Deep Level Characterization Studies In Gaas, Gordhan R. Barevadia
Deep Level Characterization Studies In Gaas, Gordhan R. Barevadia
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The goal of this research was to investigate deep levels in different types of GaAs, a material for high power optically controlled bulk semiconductor switches. For low resistivity semiconductors, such as silicon doped GaAs material (p =0.054 Ω cm), deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) was used to characterize deep levels. Three deep levels (EL6, EL3, and EL2) have been detected in this material. For high resistivity semiconductors (p > 104 Ω cm), difficulty of electrical carrier injection and of making a junction does not permit the use of DLTS technique. Therefore, an experimental set-up of the photo-induced current transient spectroscopy …
A Software Design Tool For Predictable Performance In Real-Time, Data Flow Architectures, Brij Mohan V. Mandala
A Software Design Tool For Predictable Performance In Real-Time, Data Flow Architectures, Brij Mohan V. Mandala
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A software design tool which aids in the performance evaluation and selection of operating points for an algorithm implemented in ATAMM defined data flow architectures is presented in this thesis. ATAMM (Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model) is a new graph theoretic model developed by researchers at Old Dominion University and the NASA-Langley Research Center. ATAMM is capable of modeling the execution of large-grained algorithms on distributed data flow architectures. A software tool is required for predicting the performance, determining the resource requirements and for selecting suitable operating points for an ATAMM based system. The ATAMM Design Tool presented in this …
Body Image And Perceptions Of Body Size Among Black And White College Women, Clifford E. Rucker Iii
Body Image And Perceptions Of Body Size Among Black And White College Women, Clifford E. Rucker Iii
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to examine several facets of body image and weight-related concerns among 121 Black and White female college students. This study evaluated body-image using multiple, internally consistent, self-report measures and the use of the body-image silhouettes to assess perceptions of body fatness. Three primary domains assessed in this study were: (a) body-image attitudes, (b) body-image perceptions, and (c) eating behavior and weight concerns. As hypothesized, the Black females held more favorable body-image attitudes than Whites, on both global and weight-related body-image affect, cognitions, and behaviors. Moreover, compared with Whites, the Black women held body-size …

The Hong Kong Jury: A Microcosm Of Society?, Peter Duff, Mark Findlay, Carla Howarth
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The claim that the jury is a randomly chosen and representative sample of community is an important part of the ideology which currently underpins the institution. Supporters of the jury argue that both its impartiality and its independence from the State are bolstered by the fact that it represents a randomly selected cross-section of the populace. In most common law jurisdictions where the jury operates, various steps have been taken over recent years in order preserve and strengthen the perception of the jury as a "microcosm of democratic society". For example, in England the property qualification for jurors was removed …
Product Health Claims And The First Amendment: Scientific Expression And The Twilight Zone Of Commercial Speech, Martin H. Redish
Product Health Claims And The First Amendment: Scientific Expression And The Twilight Zone Of Commercial Speech, Martin H. Redish
Vanderbilt Law Review
Imagine, for a moment, that Congress has enacted the "False and Misleading Medical and Scientific Reporting Act of 1990." The law is premised on a fear that scientific quackery may cause significant societal harm by confusing the public and inducing its members to seek out costly, worthless, and possibly harmful medical cures or supposed scientific advances. The Act establishes a special commission of scientific and medical experts to rule on the accuracy of any proposed scientific or medical theory that conceivably could cause public harm or confusion. Such scientific or medical assertions must be substantiated to the commission's satisfaction, or …
Franchising And The Collective Rights Of Franchisees, Robert W. Emerson
Franchising And The Collective Rights Of Franchisees, Robert W. Emerson
Vanderbilt Law Review
Assume that you are the franchisee of a nationwide restaurant chain. Your franchisor has acted contrary to what you believe to be in your best interest. For the franchisor, bigger is better: more outlets and discount programs mean higher sales volume and consequently additional franchise fees and royalties, with royalties typically being based on gross sales-not franchisee net profits. You are concerned that the franchisor is oriented more toward expansion than the well-being of existing franchisees. Franchisor assistance is less than you expected, but royalties and other charges seem steep.Facing a strong franchisor that appears not to worry about an …
Aids, Rape, And The Fourth Amendment: Schemes For Mandatory Aids Testing Of Sex Offenders, Paul H. Macdonald
Aids, Rape, And The Fourth Amendment: Schemes For Mandatory Aids Testing Of Sex Offenders, Paul H. Macdonald
Vanderbilt Law Review
Few subjects are as emotionally troubling as AIDS' and rape. The latter, of course, has plagued society throughout human history, but AIDS only recently has imposed itself upon our social and medical consciousness. Ever since AIDS became a familiar sight in the headlines nearly ten years ago, society has reacted to it with a mixture of anxiety, confusion, and despair. One consequence of the new societal awareness is the increased hesitancy with which individuals approach intimate contact. When intimate contact is involuntary as in the case of rape, fear of exposure to the disease is especially pronounced. Society, however, seems ill-prepared …

Tenure' is the crowning laurel of academia. The process of reviewing a candidate for tenure at the university level generally begins with an evaluation and recommendation by a group of the candidate's peers. Candidates who are denied tenure may seek judicial review of the decision and discovery of peer review materials. Not surprisingly, universities encourage courts to defer to tenure decisions and to deny plaintiffs access to confidential peer review documents.Traditionally, in fact, courts have given great deference to university tenure decisions. Judicial deference has pervaded every phase of review from discovery to trial and remedy. As deference to university …
The Use Of Risk Assessment Evidence To Prove Increased Risk And Alternative Causation In Toxic Tort Litigation, Gary E. Marchant, Michael S. Baram
The Use Of Risk Assessment Evidence To Prove Increased Risk And Alternative Causation In Toxic Tort Litigation, Gary E. Marchant, Michael S. Baram
Faculty Scholarship
Due to the difficulties of proving causation in most toxic tort suits, plaintiffs and defendants in toxic tort litigation have begun to develop and use scientifically sophisticated risk assessments as evidence in proving or disproving causation. This use has led to two new trends in tort liability. First, there is the trend in which risk assessment is used by plaintiffs to buttress claims for future injury or increased risk. Second, there is the trend in which risk assessment is used by defendants to establish that other factors caused, in whole or in part, plaintiffs’ injuries.
This article evaluates these two …
Gravitational Synchrotron Radiation From Cosmic Strings, Alan Cresswell, Robert L. Zimmerman
Gravitational Synchrotron Radiation From Cosmic Strings, Alan Cresswell, Robert L. Zimmerman
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This work studies the gravitational synchrotron radiation emitted from arbitrary cusps of cosmic strings. The results are expressed in terms of four parameters describing the motion of such a cusp. The power spectrum is derived for cusps moving at unit velocity. By using a phenomenological approach the authors also derive the power emitted when the radiation reaction on the cusps is taken into account. In both cases, the synchrotron nature of the radiation produces a power spectrum emitted in a narrow forward cone. If cosmic strings do exist, the radiation emitted by their cusps would seem to be a potential …
