National Service: The Overview, Unknown Oct 1990

National Service: The Overview, Unknown

Service Learning, General

An INDEPENDENT SECTOR national survey report indicates that many Americans are not being asked to volunteer. Among the 41 percent who were asked to volunteer in the past year, 87 percent actually did. Among the 57 percent of those who were not asked, only 30 percent volunteered. These findings suggest that if more Americans are asked to volunteer, the proportion of the population that volunteers can be measurably increased.

Designing And Implementing A Values Education Program, Bonnie S. Copeland, Mary Ellen Saterlie Oct 1990

Designing And Implementing A Values Education Program, Bonnie S. Copeland, Mary Ellen Saterlie

Service Learning, General

Most educators are vitally interested in values education. Encouragement and support come from parents, the business' community, law enforcement agencies, and local government officials. The problem lies in creating a values education program that is acceptable to all segments of the community.

The Australian Lupin Collection - Passport Data For Wild And Semi-Domesticated Accessions Introduced Into Australia To 1990, J. C. Clements, W. A. Cowling Oct 1990

The Australian Lupin Collection - Passport Data For Wild And Semi-Domesticated Accessions Introduced Into Australia To 1990, J. C. Clements, W. A. Cowling

Grain and other field crops published reports

This report contains passport (including collection site) data and Commonwealth Plant Introduction (CPI) numbers for all wild and semi-domesticated Lupinus accessions introduced into Australia to 1990 (a total of 1071 accessions with CPI numbers between 10650 and 122692). Scientists or plant breeders with an interest in the characteristics of wild lupins from certain natural environments, such as high soil pH or low rainfall, will find this information invaluable when they select accessions for their experiments. The majority of the accessions were introduced by Western Australian scientists following collecting missions in the Mediterranean region, and the remainder were donated from institutions …

The Slowdown In Soviet Defense Expenditures: Comment, Abdur Chowdhury, Josef C. Brada, Ronald L. Graves Oct 1990

The Slowdown In Soviet Defense Expenditures: Comment, Abdur Chowdhury, Josef C. Brada, Ronald L. Graves

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The reason for the apparently opposing results in Brada and Graves' (1988) attempt to explain the reasons for the slowdown in USSR defense expenditures in the mid-1970s is that their analysis suffers from a serious serial correlation problem. The majority of the regressions display Durbin-Watson statistics that reject the null hypothesis of no autocorrelation. A reestimation of their results, after correcting for serial correlation, changes some of their major conclusions regarding the factors influencing Soviet defense spending. The corrected results indicate that no structural break occurred in the mid-1970s. These results suggest that there has been no change in Soviet …

Space Structures: Issues In Dynamics And Control, H. Benaroya, Mark L. Nagurka Oct 1990

Space Structures: Issues In Dynamics And Control, H. Benaroya, Mark L. Nagurka

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A selective technical overview is presented on the vibration and control of large space structures, the analysis, design, and construction of which will require major technical contributions from the civil/structural, mechanical, and extended engineering communities. The immediacy of the U.S. space station makes the particular emphasis placed on large space structures and their control appropriate. The space station is but one part of the space program, and includes the lunar base, which the space station is to service. This paper attempts to summarize some of the key technical issues and hence provide a starting point for further involvement. The first …

The Role Of The Democratic And Republican Parties As Organizers Of Shadow Interest Groups, Jonathan R. Macey Oct 1990

The Role Of The Democratic And Republican Parties As Organizers Of Shadow Interest Groups, Jonathan R. Macey

Michigan Law Review

This article advances a new theory to explain the relationship between political parties and interest groups. Among the as yet unanswered questions that I resolve are: (1) why many politicians -both Republicans and Democrats - develop a reputation for "party loyalty" despite the parties' inability to employ any meaningful sanctions against politicians who deviate from the party line; (2) why candidates for public office run in contested primaries when running as an independent generally would be a less costly mechanism for getting on the ballot; (3) why the two major U.S. political parties continue to attract resources from contributors and …
