Insecticide Toxicity, Synergism, And Resistance In The German Cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), Jeffrey G. Scott, Donald C. Cochran, Blair Siegfried
Insecticide Toxicity, Synergism, And Resistance In The German Cockroach (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), Jeffrey G. Scott, Donald C. Cochran, Blair Siegfried
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The toxicity of, synergism of, and resistance to insecticides in four strains of German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), were investigated. Toxicity of nine insecticides by topical application to the susceptible strain varied >2,000-fold, with deltamethrin (LD50 = 0.004 μg per cockroach) and malathion (LD50 = 8.4 μg per cockroach) being the most and least toxic, respectively. Resistance to pyrethrins (9.5-fold) in the Kenly strain was unaffected by the synergists piperonyl butoxide (PBO) or S,S,S-tributylphosphorotrithioate( DEE), suggesting that metabolism is not involved in this case. Malathion resistance in the Rutgers strain was suppressible with PBO, implicating oxidative metabolism as …

Effects Of Ethanol Extraction And Heat Treatment Of Soybean Flakes On Function And Morphology Of Pig Intestine, J. D. Hancock, E. R. Peo Jr., A. J. Lewis, Rodney A. Moxley
Effects Of Ethanol Extraction And Heat Treatment Of Soybean Flakes On Function And Morphology Of Pig Intestine, J. D. Hancock, E. R. Peo Jr., A. J. Lewis, Rodney A. Moxley
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Digesta and tissue samples were collected from the intestinal tracts of 27 pigs to determine the relationship between intestinal morphology and the utilization of nutrients from soybean flakes. Soybean flake treatments were under-, intermediate- and overprocessed (Le., 5, 20 and 60 min of autoclaving) either without extraction or with heating before or after extraction with a 55% ethanol-water mixture. Final BW was greatest (P< .001) for pigs fed soybean flakes given 20 min of heat treatment. There was a trend (P < .09) for plasma lysine concentrations to be reduced when the unextracted soybean flakes were over-processed (60 min of heat). Differences in the flow rate of DM and N through the ileum and colon reflected differences in DM and N intake, rather than differences in intestinal function. The soybean flake treatments had no effect (P > .OS) on pH of the contents of the stomach, duodenum, ileum or colon. The ethanol extraction process increased (P < .001) N digestibility of the soybean flakes, especially when the soybean flakes were underprocessed (interaction, P < .02). Villus size (area, height and perimeter length) tended to be greater in pigs fed the soybean flakes heated after extraction and(or) exposed to the intermediate level of heat treatment. Indicators of villus shape (villus area/ villus height) and proliferative activity (crypt depth and villus heigh/crypt depth) were not affected by soybean flake treatment (P > .OS). Ethanol extraction and heat treatment affected the utilization of nutrients …

Andrya rauschi n. sp. from Microtus guentheri differs from all other species in testes number (22-40) and distribution. Andryar auschi is superficially similar to Paranoplocephala omphalodes but differs in the development of the uterus. Paranoplocephala nevoi n. sp. from Spalax ehrenbergi, is most similar to Paranoplocephala gundii,/i> and Paranoplocephalaja nickii but differs in the number of testes (26-44). Paranoplocephala nevoi differs from the remaining species in the distribution of testes and in having unilateral genital pores.

The Obligation To Obey Law: A New Theory And An Old Problem, Tamar L. Smith
The Obligation To Obey Law: A New Theory And An Old Problem, Tamar L. Smith
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Numerous theories have been developed to explain the basis, beyond a legal one, upon which the citizen's obligation to obey the law rests. In The Authority of the State, Leslie Green has contributed a new theory of obedience, one which explores the bases of civility and tolerance as foundations for obedience rendered to the legal system. This new theory is discussed within the context of a real world problem, one that has distressed the world community for years - the treatment of blacks in South Africa. Does this theory have any significance for citizens caught up in a fundamental and …

Vincentian Studies
The life of Charles Boglioli is recounted to inspire his fellow Vincentians and the Daughters of Charity. Best known at the time of his death for his work among people with Hansen’s Disease (formerly known as leprosy), Boglioli had a varied and successful career. He taught at seminaries and served at mission stations all over Louisiana. During the Civil War, he was a chaplain. He inspired the establishment of the hospital for people with Hansen’s Disease in Carville and worked at the Charity Hospital in New Orleans among similar patients beginning in 1866. He died of Hansen’s Disease in 1882, …

An Empirical Comparison Of Direct Product Profit And Existing Measures Of Sku Productivity, Norm Borin, Paul Farris
An Empirical Comparison Of Direct Product Profit And Existing Measures Of Sku Productivity, Norm Borin, Paul Farris
Marketing
DPP (direct product profitability) has been heralded as one of the more important advances in supermarket shelf management, yet its acceptance by managers in the industry has been slow. Not only is DPP complex and expensive to calculate, but some question exists about whether decisions based on DPP are different from those based on traditional criteria such as gross margin and movement. A data base of nine dry-grocery categories is used here to compare DPP with other SKU indices. DPP is shown to lead to significantly different rankings in some categories, but not all. A Merchandising Attractiveness Index (MAl) is …

Notes On Neotropical Amanoa (Euphorbiaceae), W. John Hayden
Notes On Neotropical Amanoa (Euphorbiaceae), W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
Lectotypes are designated for Amanoa caribaea Krug & Urban and A. guianensis Aublet; presumed syntypes of the latter taxon are shown to be heterogeneous by inclusion of a previously unrecognized species. Four new species of Amanoa are described: A. congesta from French Guiana and northeastern Brazil; A. gracillima from Manaus, Brazil; A. nanayensis from Amazonian Peru and adjacent Colombia and Brazil; and A. neglecta from French Guiana and Surinam. Amanoa sinuosa is proposed as a new name for the later homonym A. robusta Leal. A key to the 13 neotropical species is presented.
Effectiveness Of The Epa's Regulatory Enforcement: The Case Of Industrial Effluent Standards, W. Kip Viscusi, Wesley A. Magat
Effectiveness Of The Epa's Regulatory Enforcement: The Case Of Industrial Effluent Standards, W. Kip Viscusi, Wesley A. Magat
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The EPA water pollution regulations-the focus of this study- represent an interesting departure from past patterns of regulatory failure. First, the nature of the regulations-discharge limits-relates directly to the policy objective of controlling pollution, and there is no potential for offsetting behavioral responses. If the pollution standards are binding and enforced, they should improve water quality. Second, the enforcement effort is so extensive that enforcement should affect firms' compliance. In the pulp and paper industry, which we will analyze, the EPA averages roughly one inspection annually per major pollution source. In addition, firms are required to file monthly discharge monitoring …
