Levels Of Generality In The Definition Of Rights, Laurence H. Tribe, Michael C. Dorf
Levels Of Generality In The Definition Of Rights, Laurence H. Tribe, Michael C. Dorf
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
This article focuses on one important aspect of the quest for constitutional meaning: how to determine whether a particular liberty-whether or not expressly enumerated in the Bill of Rights-is a "fundamental" right. Whether under the somewhat tarnished banner of substantive due process or under a different rubric, the designation of a right as fundamental requires that the state offer a compelling justification for limitations of that right. In addition, under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, state-sanctioned inequalities that bear upon the exercise of a fundamental right will be upheld only if they serve a compelling governmental interest. …

Pricing In The Hospitality Industry: An Implicit Markets Approach, William E. Herrin, Steven A. Carvell
School of International Studies Faculty Articles
The authors apply economic theory to an analysis of industry pricing. Data from a cross-section of San Francisco hotels is used to estimate the implicit prices of common hotel amenities, and a procedure for using these prices to estimate consumer demands for the attributes is outlined. The authors then suggest implications for hotel decision makers. While the results presented here should not be generalized to other markets, the methodology is easily adapted to other geographic areas.

Stellar Populations In Shell Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Stellar Populations In Shell Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Faculty Scholarship
UBV surface photometry of the shell galaxies Arp 230, NGC 7010, and Arp 223 is presented. We find all to be the result of mergers. In Arp 230, the merger of two spirals reduced a burst of star formation which has declined in strength since the collision. The remnant seems likely to become elliptical. NGC 7010 has very red shells, perhaps redder than the galaxy itself. Evolution of the stellar content of these shells may be important. Arp 223 has shell colors which are slightly bluer than thee main body of the galaxy, consistent with an origin in an Sb. …

Analysis Of Bacterial Genome Organization And Replication Using Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis, A. Dingwall, L. Shapiro, Bert Ely
Faculty Publications
The techniques described in this chapter provide a framework with which to begin an analysis of important features of bacterial genome organization and gene function. In this report we describe the preparation of chromosomal DNA, conditions for digestion with restriction endonucleases, and electrophoretic methods that result in the optimal resolution of large DNA restriction fragments. The sizes of the separated fragments can be summed to accurately determine genome size. The fragments can also be probed in hybridization experiments to produce low-resolution genomic restriction maps, and the precise locations of insertion or deletion mutations can be rapidly identified. In addition, PFGE …
