A Review Of The Public Relations Courses Offered In Departments Of Colleges And Universities, Bonita Dostal Neff
A Review Of The Public Relations Courses Offered In Departments Of Colleges And Universities, Bonita Dostal Neff
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reviews United States university catalogs to map public relations curriculum across academic disciplines. Content analysis identifies communication departments as the principal locus of course offerings, outpacing journalism, business, mass communication, and interdisciplinary units. Although journalism and mass communication once were presumed dominant, findings reveal substantial growth within liberal arts based communication programs, including robust five course sequences that meet professional accreditation guidelines. The study also shows that most programs are administratively situated in liberal arts colleges rather than journalism schools, challenging prevailing assumptions in national commission reports. By comparing departmental titles, administrative homes, and the prevalence of internship …

A Study Of Selected Faculty Handbooks: Policies On Promotion, Tenure, And Research, William W. Neher
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article analyzes faculty handbooks from United States liberal arts colleges to illuminate how academic governance codifies promotion and tenure standards. Through systematic content analysis, the study maps language governing academic freedom, probationary service, degree expectations, and research productivity, comparing these provisions with AAUP statements. Results show pronounced diversity. Teaching effectiveness consistently holds primacy, while scholarship is flexibly defined to include creative activity, consulting, and curricular innovation. Many institutions adopt religious or financial clauses, impose tenure quotas, or offer renewable multi year contracts, thereby modifying the classic permanence model. Degree requirements range from earned doctorate to appropriate terminal credential, and …

Computerized Instructional Responses: An Option For Providing Student Feedback, Kathleen German
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Use cases span public speaking interpersonal communication writing intensive assignments and basic course administration, showing that computer managed instruction can enhance formative assessment, increase feedback specificity, and conserve instructor time. The discussion evaluates advantages such as improved critique quality, increased computer literacy, and scalable application across large enrollment programs, …

Legislating Confession Law In Great Britain: A Statutory Approach To Police Interrogations, Mark Berger
Legislating Confession Law In Great Britain: A Statutory Approach To Police Interrogations, Mark Berger
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Part I provides an overview of the development of British confession law, including the changes under PACE. Part II examines PACE's impact on related subjects, such as detention conditions, access to legal advice, and waiver of the right of access to a solicitor. Finally, Part III suggests that the British experience in developing a statutory framework to regulate these issues can serve as a model for undertaking such reforms in the United States.
Summary Judgment Before The Completion Of Discovery: A Proposed Revision Of Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 56(F), John F. Lapham
Summary Judgment Before The Completion Of Discovery: A Proposed Revision Of Federal Rule Of Civil Procedure 56(F), John F. Lapham
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Part I of this Note discusses the purpose of summary judgment in a regime of notice pleading. Part II examines how the federal courts have interpreted and applied rule 56(f). Part III suggests that rule 56(f) be modified to require a more significant factual showing before a court may grant a continuance for further discovery. In addition, Part III examines the policy considerations that support a more stringent rule. Finally, Part IV provides a hypothetical example illustrating the benefits of this proposal.
Sex-Bias Topics In The Criminal Law Course: A Survey Of Criminal Law Professors, Nancy S. Erickson, Mary Ann Lamanna
Sex-Bias Topics In The Criminal Law Course: A Survey Of Criminal Law Professors, Nancy S. Erickson, Mary Ann Lamanna
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article addresses the empirical question of whether law school curricula have advanced to the stage of integrating materials on gender-related topics into core courses, thus exposing students to gender-related topics in the law and presenting a perspective shaped by women's as well as men's experiences. We examine one of the central courses of the law school curriculum: criminal law. Although some of the attention directed to sex discrimination in law has focused on specific areas of criminal law such as rape and spouse abuse, a more systematic scrutiny of the substantive rules of criminal law and the ways in …

Narrowing The Scope Of Civil Drug Forfeiture: Section 881, Substantial Connection And The Eighth Amendment, James B. Speta
Narrowing The Scope Of Civil Drug Forfeiture: Section 881, Substantial Connection And The Eighth Amendment, James B. Speta
Michigan Law Review
This Note offers two justifications for narrowing the scope of section 881 forfeiture. Part I argues that courts should apply the substantial connection test to section 881 forfeitures. This Part analyzes the statute using the traditional tools of statutory interpretation. While the text of the statute seems to support the broadest possible interpretation, the legislative history and context of adoption suggest that the substantial connection test is consistent with Congressional intent. In amending section 881, subsequent Congresses have favored application of the substantial connection test. Consistent with this narrower reading, present strategy in the "war on drugs" focuses stiff penalties …
Selecting Law Clerks, Patricia M. Wald
Selecting Law Clerks, Patricia M. Wald
Michigan Law Review
April may indeed have been "the cruellest month" this year for federal judges and their prospective clerks. For a decade now, federal judges have been trying - largely without success - to conduct a dignified, collegial, efficient law clerk selection process. Because each federal judge has only to choose two to three clerks each year, and there is a large universe of qualified applicants graduating each year from our law schools, this would not seem an insurmountable task. And because each federal judge has choice first-year positions to offer and has no need or ability to dicker on salary or …

The Reading Teacher As A Workplace Literacy Consultant, Patrick P. Mccabe
The Reading Teacher As A Workplace Literacy Consultant, Patrick P. Mccabe
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
A number of leaders in industry and government have asserted that many workers in this country lack the basic skills to perform adequately on the job; they claim that a wave of workplace illiteracy is sweeping this nation as never before. Whether the cause of this problem is perceived to be a deficit in the educational delivery system or a lag in skills due to the sudden technological explosion, it seems that there are many adults who need training in basic workplace skills in order to obtain and keep employment.
