The National Assessment of Educational Progress's Mathematics assessment (hereafter the report) provides the national, educational policy makers, and practitioner the opportunity to stop pretending not to know. The report plainly confronts our own professional knowledge regarding mathematics education. In many instances it conforms much of what research has all ready described and what we have feared regarding mathematics education.

In some instances the report agrees with Carol Glickman's view that "professionals have gone about the business of teaching and operating schools in ways they privately admit are not in the best interests of students." From this view one of the …

Le chantier de construction est un milieu de travail en constante évolution et dont plusieurs éléments physiques et organisationnels disparaissent quotidiennement pour faire place à de nouveaux. Il est donc difficile d'y analyser la nature et la fréquence d'accidents dans un contexte statique. L'étude d'accidents, survenus lorsque des machines, principalement de chantier, entrent en contact ou amorcent des arcs avec des lignes électriques sous tension, représentent une phase importante du projet de développement d'un dispositif limiteur de portée pour grues mobiles conventionnelles.

Les conclusions de cette étude serviront à indiquer des priorités à suivre dans la prévention de ce genre d'accidents. Elles serviront aussi d'indication dans les moyens de prévention à mettre en œuvre, selon la technologie des machines en question.

William A. Wilson writes of the importance of keeping family histories as a way to include ourselves and our families in the ever expanding canon of literature and as a means of giving direction to our lives. Wilson shares his own family stories through the lives of his grandfather, Robert Green, and his mother, Lucile Green Wilson. Both were Mormon settlers in Riddyville, Utah. He tells of their adventures at Lake Bonneville and in McCammon and about their everyday family interactions.

Motivational differences for resort vacation travel among family life cycle stages have not been addressed in travel research. However, from a marketing standpoint, segmenting the resort market into family life cycle groups can be reasonably important. Linking an identified group of motivat􀁄ons with these stages is the purpose of this article. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and analysis of variance are used to evaluate the data. Twenty motivations are . reduced into five motivation factors that coincide with established travel motivations or needs. Examining the ongoing debate concerning congressional power to eliminate federal court jurisdiction over cases arising under federal law from thefederal Indian law viewpoint allows consideration of the issues in a concrete setting. Experience under the Indian Civil Rights Act during the last twenty years indicates that some federal review of actions arising under federal law is needed if the command of the supremacy clause is to be fully effectuated. At the same time, it indicates that a uniform interpretation of that federal law is not essential to the enforcement of the clause. This examination thus provides support for the distributive …

An investigation was completed which contributes to the understanding of chemical dynamics in the marine photic zone. The research was directed toward a description of natural photochemical processes which influence hydrogen peroxide (HOOH) distributions, the oxidation-reduction chemistry of iron in surface seawater, and the availability of iron to phytoplankton.

An enzyme catalyzed fluorometric method based on the dimerization of phydroxyphenylacetic acid (POHP AA) was developed for analysis of HOOH in seawater. Preconcentration of the fluorescent product provided a limit of detection for HOOH of 0.2 nanomolar (nM). A microorganism capable of synthesizing biosurfactant from cheap and renewable water-soluble substrate such as carbohydrate was isolated' from the environment in our laboratory. It was selected from other isolates by screening for its ability to reduce the tensiometric properties of the culture broth. The isolated organism (JIZAN-1) produced significant extracellular surfactant activity during growth in batch culture on modified mineral salts medium (MMSM) containing 0.2% glucose as a carbon source and 0.02% yeast extract as a growth cofactor. The Clean Air Act was the product of a spasm of extraordinary political unanimity. Its actual implementation, however, has been divisive and controversial from the start. For two decades now, politicians, members of the regulated community, environmental activists, and academics have been debating whether the Act represents a rational investment (current expenditures for air pollution control are generally estimated at something above thirty billion dollars), uses optimal or even sensible regulatory mechanisms, or has accomplished anything at all.

No single issue between lawyer and client arises more frequently or generates more public resentment than fee problems. Ethical tenets urge lawyers to resolve fee 4isputes without resort to litigation. Where such procedures exist, attorneys are admonished to submit disputes to arbitration. In several jurisdictions, arbitration has gained endorsement from bar associations as the preferred method of fee dispute resolution.

This design project documents the design of two low cost, easily assembled, easily replaced charging devices useable in the electrophotographic process. The design process begins with the purpose of the chargers and a comparison to previous designs. Manufacturing processes and material selections are covered. Two plastic springs are designed and analyzed using classical equations and finite element analysis. Consideration is given to temperature and time effects on these springs. The major plastic structure (the housing) is analyzed for stress and deflection using finite element analysis with consideration given to thermal and creep effects. Datum selection is discussed. Drag Reduction In Pipe Flows With Polymer Additives, Daniel W. Grabowski

Theses

Polyethylene Oxides (PEO) with molecular weights of 4 and 6 million and a Polyacrylamide (PAM) with a molecular weight of 15 million, were added to a turbulent pipe flow (15000 < Re < 50000) for drag reduction. The polymer was injected directly into the test section in one scenario, premixed in a tank and then pumped through the test section in the second. The injection addition method was found to be optimal because it subjected the polymer to lower amounts of shear stresses than the premixed addition method. A maximum of 75% reduction in drag was obtained. Even trace concentrations, as low as 2.5 WPPM (weight parts per million) , resulted in as high as 37% reduction in drag. Long thin high molecular weight polymers (PEO) were more effective than coiled high molecular weight polymer (PAM) . For the same molecular structure it was found that the polymer with heavier molecules had better drag reducing characteristics. The polymer with coiled molecules, however, is more resistant to shear stresses which break down the polymer into smaller less effective molecules. It was found that there is a critical concentration for the greatest drag reduction. This concentration is approximately 375 WPPM (.0375% byweight) of PEO for the injection method, and 500 WPPM of PEO for the premixed method. At greater concentrations, the viscosity of the solution increases such that the drag reduction characteristics of the polymer can no longer compensate.

We have studied the production of Ds mesons in the decays of B mesons at the Υ(4S) resonance. We report on the first observation of exclusive B-meson decays B->Ds−D*+, B→Ds−D+, and B→Ds−D0. We also present a new measurement of the branching ratio and the momentum spectrum for the inclusive decay B→DsX.
