Of the many interpretations of cantos and characters in Dante's Divine Comedy, few rival the wordplay in Gabriele Rossetti's commentary (1826-27). None that I know rivals its imaginative recreation of fourteenth-century literary and political history. According to Rossetti, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio and a nest of Cathari were members of an underground network. Dissident poets, politicians, and church reformers therein camouflaged their attacks against the papacy to prevent detection and reprisal.

Phaseolus vulgaris (navy bean) and P. acutifolius (tepary bean) were grown hydroponically and stressed with -0.25 MPa NaCl for 9 days beginning 22 days after planting. Chloride and sodium distribution in leaves and roots as well as percent ion leakage as an indication of membrane integrity in leaves were determined. Chloride levels in NaCl treated plants were significantly higher than in controls. Chloride levels were not significantly different between plant parts or between plant species. Sodium distribution differed significantly between the roots of navy and tepary but not between the leaves of the two species. Navy root tissue contained twice …

The purpose of this study was to investigate through electronic monitoring whether immediate post-exercise heart rates determined in an erect position are an accurate representation of heart rates achieved during swimming exercises performed in the prone position. In addition, a comparison was made to determine what differences, if any, existed between immediate post-exercise heart rates determined by radial palpation and immediate recovery heart rates determined by electronic monitoring.

Fourteen male and four female members of the Eastern Illinois University Swim Program volunteered to be subjects.

In the summer of 1705, as Sir John Vanbrugh was casting about for dramatic source material which might play successfully at the new Haymarket theatre, he rediscovered Florent Dancourt's Les Bourgeoises à la Mode and, in the manner of Restoration theatre playwrights, created an adapted version in many respects quite different from the original. This adaptation, known as The Confederacy, is considered by many Vanbrugh scholars to be one of the English author's best works.

This descriptive research was conducted to collect data concerning the accessibility of school microcomputers to students who have been labeled as having a mild (high prevalence) handicapping condition. One hundred thirty nine randomly selected school administrators in East Central Illinois were surveyed to determine the number of microcomputers in their schools and the types of programs that were offered to students with special needs. Listening training and development in organizations is becoming increasingly popular. Much literature has examined different aspects of listening and the training in this area used by organizations. The purpose of this thesis is to examine several areas concerning listening training in an organization.

A random sample of faculty at a medium sized midwestern university were utilized as the participants for this study. A fifty five percent usable return rate provided the data base. Age, Gender, And Religious Differences In Moral Perspective, Samuel L. Clay

An investigation was conducted to see if age and gender are related to a preference for a caring versus a justice morality. The World View Questionnaire with 40 word pairs was used to measure a preference for a caring morality. It was found that there was a significant gender difference in the caring score, with the females scoring higher than the males. There also was a significant religious difference in the caring score with religious and especially Mormon subjects scoring higher than non-religious subjects. There was not, however, a significant age difference as was predicted.

Intuitively, mission work in such lands would seems to have some impact but the actual conditions and changes are not carefully defined. This thesis seeks to describe one instance, the effect of the LDS Church upon Tonga. Here the Church is a fairly recent entrant into the land and its effects may readily be seen.

The present study included surveys of a four hectare section of Barkhausen Conservation Area and a two hectare forested section in the Sand Prairie-Scrub Oak Nature Preserve. This study examines the floristic composition and structure of these forests, and some of the ecological parameters that may be responsible for their existence. In this study, the number, size and species of all living and dead standing trees (above 10 cm dbh) were recorded for each quadrat. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between training mothers to systematically stimulate their infants using form, semantic, and pragmatic behaviors during interactions with their infants and the rate and quality of language acquisition. A review of the literature indicated that mother-child interactions have a significant effect on later linguistic development. Parkland College is a community college of approximately 8,000 students located in Champaign, Illinois. The faculty and administrative staff is concerned with student retention, particularly the retention of those students in the pre-college or underprepared category who take courses that are below the college level. This retention study identified characteristics of underprepared students, interventions that had been successful at model community colleges, and recommended program implications for the future.

One of the least studied trends in contemporary rhetorical discourse is what Richard Weaver called the ultimate "devil term,"--words which serve as the ultimate symbols of repulsion and repellant. The Isolation And Partial Characterization Of The Lipopolysaccharides From Rhizobium Leguminosarum Biovar Trifolii Strains Tb4, Tb104, And Tb112, Jill K. Miller

The lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) from Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii TB4 and two transposon (Tn5) symbiotic mutants, R. leguminosarum bv. trifolii TB104 and TB112, were isolated and partially characterized. Bv. trifolii TB4 is a derivative of R. leguminosarum bv. trifolii ANU843. The two mutant strains elicited incompletely developed clover nodules that exhibited low bacterial populations and very low nitrogenase activity. The LPSs were extracted using the hot phenol-water method and purified with gel filtration column chromatography using Sepharose 4B with an elution buffer consisting of EDTA and triethylamine. The hexose compositions were determined by gas chromatography of the alditol acetate derivatives. LPS …

Vehicle fuel economy has become the object of intense government regulation in the last two decades. In 1975, Congress legislated Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for all new cars produced after the 1978 model year. Today, Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations are being criticized as overly strict in an era of falling gasoline prices. This study provides an assessment of the costs and benefits of the controversial CAFE program and empirically analyzes its effects.
