Gas recovery from sanitary landfills is increasingly being viewed as a valuable resource for its potential as a source of fuel gas. The operation and performance of a two-phase laboratory-scale anaerobic digestion system for improved gas production was studied for a period of two years. The system consisted of a simulated landfill loaded with representative municipal solid waste (MSW) and a separate upflow anaerobic methane reactor. The concept under investigation was the separation of the acidogenic and the methanogenic phases of anaerobic fermentation, converting the sanitary landfill into an acid reactor and using a separate upflow fixed-film anaerobic reactor for …

The relationships between the moral judgment score as measured by Rest's Defining Issues Test and certain demographic variables of higher education administrators were investigated. In addition, five personal interviews with higher education administrators were conducted to obtain personal anecdotes on decision making in ethical dilemmas. The population for the quantitative portion was a sample of all presidents, vice presidents for academics or provosts and academic deans at all four-year public higher education institutions in the United States. The research method used the DIT, an objective psychological test of moral judgment, and a demographic questionnaire developed by the researcher. To determine …

In this study, we have attempted to conduct an economic and policy analysis of the West Virginia natural gas producing industry. The research concentrated on industry activities, objectives and outcomes in the post-NGPA era. The primary goal was to determine the role of economic and market conditions on natural gas supply. First, the structure, conduct and performance of the West Virginia gas producing industry were examined with respect to key features of market structure--concentration, vertical and horizontal integration and barriers to entry. The one thing that is clear about the poor and the homeless is that their problems are multi-faceted. No one theory or group can provide all the solutions. People are poor and homeless for a wide variety of reasons, and they need different kinds of help. Providing more income assistance will not cure poverty, and providing more housing will not remedy homelessness. Neither the public nor the private sector …

Collaborative Reading At Home To Assist Children With Reading Difficulties, Criste R. Goldy

The effects of a collaborative home reading program on children with reading difficulties was studied. Students selected for the study were currently enrolled in special programs for reading and/or English as a second language. Students who participated in the Reading-At-Home program made substantial and immediate gains in reading skills, although greatest gains were made by younger students (five to eight years old). Participant reactions were also discussed.

This study assesses the goal commitment generated by different approaches to goal setting. The participants were the directors, board presidents, staff, board members and volunteers of two non-profit organizations. One group explored their history as an organization, significant events and the impact of those events before carrying out the same goal setting process as the other group. Self-efficacy was measured before the exercise began. Goal commitment was measured after participants prioritized goals and selected subgoals on which to take action. The hypothesis that cognitively reviewing past history would lead to greater commitment was rejected. A second hypothesis that the self-efficacy …

The author's goal in this article, is not merely to propose public health strategies for the future, but also to examine why government has been so slow, so equivocal, in its public health response to the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic. He argues that there has been a fundamental ambivalence in perceptions of the epidemic. For some, AIDS is perceived as a disease, with sympathy for sufferers. Once AIDS is viewed as a disease, like other catastrophic diseases, it follows that public policy will be based upon science and epidemiology--health education, research and treatment.

Transcriptional Regulation Of Gene Expression In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Laurie A. Stargell, Kathleen M. Karrer, Martin A. Gorovsky

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The only well-characterized study of gene expression in Tetrahymena thermophila (1) demonstrates that the temperature dependent expression of the Ser H3 gene is regulated at the level of mRNA stability. A run-on transcription assay was developed to determine if regulation of RNA stability was a major mechanism regulating gene expression in Tetrahymena or if transcriptional regulation dominates. The relative transcriptional activities of 14 Tetrahymena genes were determined in different physiological/developmental states (growing, starved and conjugating) in which many of the genes showed striking differences in RNA abundance.
