We re-examine the double-mode RR Lyrae (RR_d) mass determination using both new and previously existing linear pulsation models. The independently written Los Alamos (Cox, et al. 1983. Ap. J. 266, 94) and Aikawa (Aikawa and Simon 1983, Ap. J. 273, 346) pulsation codes both yield "canonical" values for the RR_d masses, i.e., 0.55 M_ʘ for 0o I clusters, and 0.65 M_ʘ for 0o II clusters. These results are essentially independent of reasonable changes in helium abundance, the treatment of convection and the formulation of standard opacities. Marine terraces are prominent landforms along the southern Oregon coast, which forms part of the forearc region of the Cascadia subduction zone. Interest in the Cascadia subduction zone has increased because recent investigations have suggested that slip along plates at certain types of convergent margins is characteristically accompanied by large earthquakes. In addition, other investigations have suggested that convergent margins can be broadly classified by the magnitude of their uplift rates. With these hypotheses in mind, we generated new uranium series, amino acid, and stable isotope data for southern Oregon marine terrace fossils. These data, along with terrace elevations and …

Production practices that increase hay yields are important for beef cattle producers in the Nebraska Sandhills. This study evaluated the responses of subirrigated meadow vegetation to fertilization with N, P, and S over a 4-yr period. A factorial array of four levels of N (0, 45, 90 and 135 kg ha^-1), two levels of P (0 and 20 kg ha^-1) and two levels of S (0 and 22 kg ha^-1) were applied each year to the same plots, arranged in a randomized complete block design. Increased difficulty in stand establishment of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) has been reported by producers since the introduction of endophyte (Acremonium coenophialum Morgan Jones and Gams)-free tall fescue seed into the market place. This has encouraged the use of higher seeding rates for endophyte-free tall fescue without scientific basis. The objective of this study was to determine whether ‘AU Triumph’, and endophyte-free cultivar, and endophyte-infected ‘Kentucky 31’ differ in minimum seeding rates for successful establishment. Modification of plant roots can potentially increase the area. of adaptation of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Limited information is available on the heritability of root diameter and root volume in tall fescue. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with'50 random 'Kentucky 31' (Ky-31) tall fescue parents and their progeny grown in aerated nutrient solution during four separate time intervals. Agronomic differences between endophyte- (Acremonium coenophialum Morgan Jones and Gams) free and endophyte-infected tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) exist, and should be considered when implementing a management strategy. Although dry matter yield of tall fescue does not generally appear to be influenced by endophyte infection status, endophyte infection has been shown to improve seedling performance and survival, is associated with insect and nematode resistance, drought resistance, improved nitrogen assimilation, and higher seed set. Considering all biologically valuable characters of the endophyte-tall fescue relationship, survival of endophyte-infected tall fescue is probably better than that of endophyte-free tall fescue, especially in drought- …

Consideration of root/soil interactions is essential in, adapting tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) to soil and climatic conditions of the Coastal Plain region of the southeast. Sandy soils of the region are very susceptible to the formation of hardpans. These compacted layers often restrict plant root development to the plow layer (0 to 6 in.) and prevent plant roots from reaching available moisture and nutrients in the subsoil horizons. Information concerning hydraulic parameters on upland areas could be greatly expanded through the use of tracing techniques. If bromide is used as a tracer, adsorption of bromide onto sediment may be of concern. Therefore, a laboratory study was conducted to identify the effects of sediment content and initial bromide concentration on adsorption of bromide for selected soils.
When bromide solutions were used within the appropriate instrument measurement range, neither soil texture, liming, nor sediment content were found to significantly affect adsorption of bromide. In contrast to systems using fluorescent dyes, correction factors for estimating adsorption of bromide are unnecessary. Since …

In this research program, we have combined psychological and ecological approaches to the study of memory, and the results demonstrate the utility of this interdisciplinary strategy. Unlike most psychological research on learning and memory, this research program originated in the study of how a particular species solves a particular ecological problem. We test the hypothesis that body size and population density of the deposit-feeding gastropod, Hydrobia truncata, are greater in muddy than in sandy habitats as a result of faster growth on fine- compared to coarse-grained sediments. We refute this hypothesis using a combination of field measurements and laboratory experiments. Three out of three populations tested had higher maximal growth rates and two of three populations approached their asymptotic size more quickly on sand than on silt-clay fractions of natural sediment. Growth decreased with increasing snail density and was as high or higher on sand as on silt-clay at all …

Vestigial mutants are associated with imaginal disc cell death which results in the deletion of adult wing and haltere structures. The vestigial locus has previously been cloned, and mutational lesions associated with a number of vg alleles were mapped within a 19 kb DNA region defined as essential for vg function. Herein we report the identification and characterization of a developmentally regu-lated 3.8 kb vg transcript which is spliced from exons distributed throughout the essential interval defined above. In vitro mutagenesis was used to create putative opal suppressor alleles of a tRNA^Trp gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The construct with the requisite anticodon change did not result in an active suppressor, whereas when a second change was introduced into the portion of the gene encoding the intron, an active and specific opal suppressor was produced. We propose that the secondary structure of transcripts from the first mutant may prevent efficient pre-tRNA processing, whereas normal processing occurs with the double mutant.

In lek breeding Sage Grouse Centrocercus urophasianus in eastern California, male mating success is strongly correlated with individual differences in lek attendance, and in the rate and acoustic quality of courtship display, suggesting that these provide cues by which females choose mates. Increased lek attendance and high display rates also associated with elevated metabolic expenditure. This paper examines the hypothesis that the ability to commit energy to display is related to the incidence of blood parasites. A single hematozoan genus, Haemoproteus, was found in 37.5% of 184 Sage Grouse sampled over a five year period. Parasitism varied across years and …

Platte thistle (Cirsium canescens Nutt.) is a native monocarpic plant species of Sandhills prairie. We concurrently tested three biological interactions that could influence its recruitment and population density: (1) predispersal flower and seed consumption by insects; (2) postdispersal loss of seeds to vertebrates, and (3) seedling competition with established plants. Few previous experimental studies have analyzed more than one of these processes at a time. Each interaction had a significant negative impact on seedling establishment. Insect seed predation caused major losses that were magnified in each succeeding life history stage. A 3-fold reduction in viable seeds by insects led …

The mosquitocidal glycoprotein endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis was digested with chymotrypsin to yield protease-resistant domains which were then separated from smaller protease digestion products by high-performance liquid chromatography. Once purified, the domains no longer bound wheat germ agglutinin, a lectin which binds N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) and GlcNAc oligomers. Purified protease-resistant domains were as toxic for Culex quinquefasciatus larvae as intact solubilized toxin. In separate experiments, the toxicity of chymotrypsin-digested endotoxin for Aedes aegypti larvae was reduced fivefold or more. A model is presented in which GlcNAc-containing oligosaccharides are required for toxicity for A. aegypti larvae but not C. …

Two species of medium stomach worms are common parasites of the caribou, Rangifer tarandus. The two species, Ostertagia gruehneri Skrjabin, 1929, and O. arctica Mitzkewitzsch, 1929, differ so markedly in morphology of the spicules and genital cone that many nematode systematists place them in different genera. Recent studies of similar pairs of species parasitic in other ruminants have provided evidence that such pairs of species may be morphotypes of one species. The single-ended, cw impedance technique has been employed to study the squashing mode of superfluid ³He-B in a sound cell with a path length of 381 µm with ultrasound frequencies of 115.8 and 141.6 MHz. A doublet splitting of the squashing mode has been observed and the width of the splitting is dependent on the thermal gradient within the acoustic cell, which strongly suggests that the observed phenomena is induced by superflow.

We present measurements of longitudinal ultrasonic velocity on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt₃. The measurements show clear signatures of second-order phase transitions in the superconducting state, with the velocity anomalies well accounted for by Ginzburg-Landau theory. From these signatures we construct a phase diagram for UPt₃ that reveals all the boundary lines that have been identified as possible phase transitions. We are able to track the phase transition lines to a tetracritical point, located on the upper-critical-field curve, to within the width of the normal-superconducting transition.

Dunlins and western willets were collected on their winter feeding grounds at Bodega Bay and Bolinas Lagoon, California, during 1986. Six digeneans, eight cestodes, two acanthocephalans, and a new nematode were found in dunlins. Seven digeneans, two cestodes, one acanthocephalan, and the new nematode were found in western willets; four helminths including the new roundworm were common to dunlins. Thominx cecumitis sp. n. differs from other capillarid nematodes with a spinous spicule-sheath in having a short, globular vulvar appendage, peanut-shapcd eggs, a cuticular ball at the posterior tip of the body, narrow lateral alae, and a cuticular genital bursa.

Helminths are reported for the first time from ermines (Mustela erminea) and martens (Martes americana) in Washington, USA. Among 22 adult ermines, 41% were infected by one or more of five species (Taenia mustelae, Alaria mustelae, Molineus patens, M. mustelae, and Trichinella spiralis). Among 78 adult martens from three geographic localities, the prevalence was 83%. Nine species were identified (Mesocestoides sp., T. mustelae and T. martis americana, Euryhelmis squamula, M. patens, Baylisascaris devosi, Physaloptera sp., Soboliphyme baturini, and T. spiralis). In examining the decay of photon-produced Be 1s2s²np(¹P), n=2,3, we discovered that the vastly predominant decay mode is to the final excited ionic states Be⁺ 1s²np, rather than the ground state. For n=2, the 2p ion accounts for 95% of the total production, with Be⁺ 1s²3p the other main contributor. For n=3, 3p is predominant, again with a very small fraction of 2s.
