The Japanese Labor Market In A Comparative Perspective With The United States: A Transaction-Cost Interpretation, Masanori Hashimoto

This study offers a comparative analysis of a number of Japanese labor market features in relation to the U.S. The author examines employer-employee attachment, workforce adjustment, and industrial relations including "unique" Japanese institutions such as joint consultation and consensus-based decision making. Hashimoto argues that cultural-traditional influences, which shape the transaction-cost environment, interacted with technological progress in shaping the various uniquely-Japanese labor market features.

Vroman introduces a model-based approach to the study of UI financing. He creates simulations for several large states in order to examine a series of funding issues, and analyzes the performance of those state's systems. In addition, he presents the regional aspects of UI funding. Vroman concludes with a brief presentation of UI solvency prospects and a description of a possible federal role in enhancing UI fund solvency.

Subshell Electron Capture In Collisions Of Fully Stripped Ions With He And H2 At Intermediate Energies, L. Meng, C. O. Reinhold, Ronald E. Olson

Classical phase-space models of the hydrogen molecule and helium are utilized to study shell and subshell electron-capture processes in collisions of fully stripped ions on charge states from 1 to 15 with H2 and He at intermediate impact energies (20200 keV/amu). Autoionization after double electron capture is approximated and is found to be an important channel for high projectile charges. The resulting (n,l) distributions for proton impact of He and H2 as well as total capture cross sections are found to be in very good agreement with experimental data. l distributions for high projectile charges are also analyzed for …

Serial Conditioning As A Function Of Stimulus, Response, And Temporal Dependencies, William L. Palya, Rick A. Bevins

Six experiments were used to examine the effects of explicit response, stimulus, and temporal dependencies on responding in an interfood interval. The first two experiments demonstrated that 10- segment 60-s interfood clocks controlled similar distributions of key pecking in pigeons regardless of whether response-reinforcement contiguity was required, allowed, or precluded. The third and fourth experiments found that in the absence of an explicit response-reinforcement dependency, systematic explicit stimuli in an interfood interval were sufficient to establish and maintain the characteristic distribution of key pecking and that an interval without an explicit clock failed to establish or maintain key pecking. Groundwater Seepage Into The Indian River Lagoon At Port St Lucie, Ashok Pandit, Clovis Clovis El-Khazen

A finite element program, GROSEEP, was developed to estimate the groundwater seepage from the surficial aquifer into Indian River lagoon along a selected cross-section in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The model is a general purpose model and can be used at other cross-sections. Model results using a single layer indicate that groundwater seepage could be an important freshwater source into the lagoon. Sensitivity analysis using a three-layer model predicted that among other parameters the presence of windows in the clay layers could significantly affect seepage rates into the lagoon.

Holocene Evolution Of Indian River Lagoon In Central Brevard County, Florida, Sharon F. Bader, Randall W. Parkinson

This study examined the coastal response of central Brevard County to rising Holocene sea level as it has been recorded in sediments of Indian River lagoon. The typical Holocene sediment sequence, in ascending order, consists of: (1) depauperate marsh muds, (2) sandy muds and muddy sands that contain a restricted marine fauna, and (3) sands and muddy sands that contain an abundant, more normal marine fauna. This transgressive sequence developed as rising Holocene sea level flooded a Pleistocene topographic depression (paleolagoon). It is often capped by (4) a coarser sand that exhibits a decrease in faunal abundance and diversity. The …
