Regrowth And Palatability Of Acacia Shoots Following Pruning By African Savanna Browsers, Johan T. Du Toit, J. P. Bryant, K. Frisby

Stands of two species of African Acacia were monitored for 1 yr in a natural savanna ecosystem, to compare shoot regrowth and leaf chemistry in lightly browsed and heavily browsed trees. Where ungulates concentrated at a seasonal waterhole, A. nigrescens was more severely browsed than the thornier and finer leafed A. tortilis. Shoot regrowth in heavily browsed A. nigrescens more than compensated for herbivory, as net annual shoot extension was not significantly different from that in light browsed trees. Foliage of heavily browsed A. nigrescens was higher in nutrients and lower in condensed tannins than foliage of light browsed trees. …

The fourth key phase of the evolution of deregulation--globalization--is now underway. The U.S. experience with domestic airline deregulation offers some lessons for international airport managers about to experience deregulation in their nations (or in nearby nations). Airport managers in the international marketplace must be prepared for a new global airline situation which will change airport/airline relationships.

An extensive laboratory study of the asphalt paving mixtures containing baghouse fines has been conducted through seven sets of experimental designs to characterize the performance of pavement. Marshall size specimens of asphalt paving mixtures with different kinds and amounts of baghouse fines were fabricated using the gyratory testing machine. The following techniques were used to evaluate the influence of the various variables upon mechanical properties such as: gyratory parameters, resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength, indirect creep, and Hveem stability tests to evaluate their mechanical properties. The major purpose of this study was to use the high pressure-gel permeation techniques to evaluate the changes in asphalt subjected to different mix production parameters, including plant type, level of aging and fuel used in the burner of the drier. Additional objectives were to establish correlations between physical parameters of asphalts and their chromatographic parameters, and to determine whether the HPGPC technique could be used to detect burner fuel contamination in the mix produced by asphalt plants.

With increase in axle loads, tire pressures and volume of truck traffic there has been an increase in the rate of which bituminous pavements are exhibiting rutting. Because resistance to rutting can be increased by the addition of crushed aggregate, a need exists for a method of determining what amount of crushed material is required and the characteristics of that crushed material to optimize performance and economy.

The Effects Of The All-Red Clearance Interval On Intersection Accident Rates In Indiana, Brian Alan Roper, Jon D. Fricker, Kumares C. Sinha, Robert E. Montgomery

The research reported is an evaluation of all-red clearance intervals as the second phase of a project involving traffic signal operation. The first phase of the project dealt with leading versus lagging left turn signal phasing. The study analyzed both the short-term and long-term effects of all-red interval on accident rates in Indiana using accident records for the years 1981 to 1987. The results contradict those of previous studies. Statistical tests indicated that all-red clearance intervals did not cause a reduction in accident rates at the intersections studied in Indiana.

Speed Trends On Indiana Rural Interstate Highways, David L. Cochran

This report includes calendar years 1983 through 1989, and is the second speed survey made exclusively of rural interstate data. All data were retrieved from locations that have been exempted from the 55 MPH Speed Compliance Certification Program.

The results of this study show that all vehicles on all Indiana rural interstate highways, had an average speed of 65.6 mph in 1989. This is 1.6 mph higher than the 1988 average speed of 64.0 mph, and 1.7 mph higher than the average speed of 63.9 mph during the 1987 calendar year. The report completes a portion of the long-term project concerned with the development of county engineering soils maps in the State of Indiana. The soils mapping of Henry County was done primarily by the analysis of landforms and associated parent materials as portrayed on stereoscopic aerial photographs. Valuable information for soils was obtained from publications of the Soil Conservation Service, United States Department of Agriculture. Test data from roadway and bridge projects was obtained from the Indiana Department of Transportation. Pawns, Potentates, And Parasites: Thucydides On Faction And Civil War, John Patrick Coby

Thucydides offers two sustained accounts of cities torn by domestic strife, Corcyra and Athens. His analysis suggests that faction arises either from weakness or from strength. Corcyra was a dependent city, and its civil war was a function of foreign intervention; Athens was an imperial city, and its faction resulted from its own exorbitant desires and from the wear and tear of maintaining dominion. Thucydides has no easy solution to propose, but his ambivalence toward empire and his rejection of democracy point in the direction of moderation abroad and mixed government at home.
