The impact of artificial intelligence on computer vision has provided various perspectives and approaches to solving problems of the human visual system. Some of the symbolic processing and knowledge-based techniques implemented in vision systems represent a meaningful extension to the low-level, algorithmic processing which has been emphasized since the advent of the computer vision field. The higher-level processes attempt to capture the essence of visual cognition, specifically by encompassing a model of the visual world and the reasoning processes that manipulate this stored visual knowledge and environmental cues. Dynamic scheduling is the ability to create an effective schedule based on the current state of a manufacturing factory. I have developed such a scheduler for an injection molding department. The molding department provides the "factory" for which the schedule is created. In order to test my scheduling algorithm, I have developed three modules that form a complete factory model. A user interface allows access to the factory system. A factory database system permits the user to create and maintain the data that is required. This thesis describes a system for the creation and realistic depiction of non-geometric, complex, three dimensional solid models by utilizing a ray tracing algorithm and a graphics relational database. Geometric primitives such as a sphere, cylinder, block, and cone are combined together by using the Boolean set operations of union (+), intersection (&), and difference (-). The three dimensional solid models are built based on the concept of constructive solid geometric modeling. The disadvantage with fibre optics is the high cost and the need for a cable to connect the sender to the receivers, hence making it impractical to have fibre optic cables over large distances. CRT (cathode ray tube) based, direct selection dialogs for computing machines and systems were apparently a cure for issues like ease of learning and ease of use. But unforeseen ~ and probably unforeseeable problems arose as increasingly sophisticated systems and dialogs were developed. This paper describes some of the emerging problems in CRT-based dialog design, develops theories about why they occur, and discusses potential solutions for them as a basis for future research. This investigation also provides a survey of the research into what makes programming and programming languages difficult, and what makes them simple.

Shift-Invariant Image Reconstruction Of Speckle-Degraded Using Bispectrum Estimation, Steven M. Wear

Coherent speckle noise is modeled as a multiplicative noise process that has a negative exponential probability density function. Using a homomorphic transfor mation, this speckle noise is converted to a signal-independent, additive process. The speckled images are randomly jittered from frame-to-frame against a uniform background to simulate image motion and/or platform jitter. Multiple images are logarithmically transformed and ensemble averaged in the bispectral domain. The bispectrum ignores this image motion so no blurring results from the ensemble averaging. Object Fourier magnitude and phase information are also retained in the bispectrum so that the resultant image can be uniquely reconstructed. This …

The analysis and simulation of the motion of a digitally-controlled digital imaging system is presented. The dynamic system consists of a scanning carriage, power transmission elements, a prime mover, and a control subsystem. The prime mover is a permanent magnet DC motor that is positioned by a direct digital control system. The scan carriage motion is mathematically modeled and simulated using ACSL and DADS simulation software. T he simulation results are compared to empirical data. This study examined the effect of flexographic printing, using both natural rubber and photopolymer printing plates, on the top-to-bottom compression strength of RSC style shipping containers. six sets of factors were studied including, 1) Print location on panels (center, one-inch to edge); 2) Number of panels printed (two majors, all four); 3) Print coverage (15%, 30%); 4) Number of colors of print (one-, two-color); 5) Flute size (B, C); and 6) Shape of print (square, rectangle). In this paper, a model for predicting the quantum efficiency and responsivity of silicon based solid state photodiodes is presented. The model is first developed using semiconductor theory and then implemented in a computer software program. Correct operation of the modeling program is verified by comparing the published reflectance curves of several silicon dioxide-silicon substrate samples with the reflectance curves produced by the modeling program. Next, a system capable of measuring photodiode quantum efficiency and responsivity is presented and used to measure quantum efficiency and responsivity for a photodiode specimen. The polarization of helium (2³S₁) metastable atoms saturates at 50% when the ensemble is optically pumped with the D0 (2³S₁-2³P₀) transition. We have obtained polarizations approaching 100% with a simple, straightforward modification to the conventional experimental arrangement. The addition of a small amount of -polarized D₀ light incident on the cell perpendicular to the defining field direction doubles the polarization produced by circularly polarized + light along the field direction. A simple rate-equation model illustrates the enhancement. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

The radiative Auger emission (RAE) from 0.946.25-MeV/u ₁₆S¹³⁺ (lithiumlike) projectiles excited in collisions with He target atoms has been measured. For these highly stripped ions the intensity of RAE photons relative to K x-ray emission is enhanced by about a factor of five compared with theoretical calculations and an earlier experimental measurement for S ions with few electron vacancies. The enhancement of RAE for S¹³⁺ is qualitatively similar to results reported previously for lithiumlike ₂₃V²⁰⁺; however, some differences between S and V are evident. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Measurements of the differential and total cross sections for production of free electrons are reported for collisions of 66.7350-keV/u C+ ions with He. The experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations that include electron emission from both target and projectile using the classical-trajectory Monte Carlo method and the independent-electron approximation. Good agreement is observed between theory and experiment, and structures appearing in the electron spectra can be explained in terms of either, or both, target and projectile ionization. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

The effects of rotational-vibrational interaction, and of rotational coupling between the B 2p u+1 and C 2p u1 electronic states, on the B X fluorescence continuum of H2 associated with spontaneous dissociation were investigated spectroscopically using monochromatized synchrotron radiation for selective excitation of rovibronic states. The rotational shifts and perturbations in the modulated continua intensities observed agree well with close-coupling and Jeffreys-Wentzel-Kromers-Brillouin (JWKB) calculations also performed and are explained in terms of nonadiabatic coupling effects and rainbow-interference structures. A straightforward experimental technique is described to detect mixed electronic states. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

The thermoelastic problem of an orthotropic beam supported by an elastic foundation which resists lateral deformations as well as displacements parallel to the beam axis is considered. The solution for a relatively thick beam is obtained based on the first-order shear deformation theory. The problem is reduced to- the solution of an ordinary seventh-order differential equation which can be obtained in the closed form. The case of a slender beam is treated as a particular case of a more general solution for a shear deformable beam. © 1990 ASME.

Marchand and Duffy have reported detailed measurements of the temperature and strain as a shear band develops in a HY-100 steel. Assuming their torsional tests in thin-wall tubes can be adequately modeled by a viscoplastic block undergoing overall adiabatic simple shearing deformations, we investigate the effect of modeling the viscoplastic response of the material by a.power law, and flow rules proposed by Litonski, Bodner and Partom, and Johnson and Cook. This study investigated public high school teachers perceptions about religions in the curriculum, and practices of public high school teachers when teaching about religions in public high school classrooms. The study used a modified version of the analytical induction model of qualitative research presented by (Bogdan & Biklen, 1982). Three pre-selected high schools in the state of Iowa were identified by the researcher for study. A common departmental structure was used to identify teachers from across the curriculum as participants in the study. The schools were of three different enrollment sizes. Reading teachers in Chapter I school programs are currently following a job description based upon expectations of the past (Robinson & Pettit, 1978). Traditionally, the solution for schools' reading problems has been to employ specially trained teachers to work with students on a referral basis outside the classroom. An increased interest in reading and an abundance of government funding during the 1950 1 s and 1960 1 s served to reinforce this plan. The emphasis in these remedial programs was on correcting reading failure after it had happened rather than preventing it (Smith, 1962).

Controversy continues in the realm of acceleration for gifted children. Acceleration is widely accepted and endorsed by experts in the field of talented and gifted education as a viable, valid, and necessary aspect in meeting the needs of intellectually gifted students (Aldrich, 1989; Bolenbaugh, 1980; Brody & Benbow, 1987; Daniel & Cox, 1987; Gohlke, 1979; Huffman, 1983; Kulik & Kulik, 1984; Pollins, 1983). However, it is an objectionable option for many educational policy makers and practitioners in the educational field and in local schools (Southern, Jones, & Fiscus, 1989).
