Prior to the opening of William H. Spencer High School in 1930, the highest level of public education that Columbus, Georgia, provided for its black students was nine years of industrial schooling that was designed to prepare them for jobs as manual laborers or domestic workers. The process which led to the development of Spencer High School was complex and protracted and involved a variety of organizations and individuals, but the major impetus for the building of the school came from three sources. This study is a descriptive investigation of science instructional programs in three senior high schools, reviewed from four different standpoints. Criteria set forth by the Quality Basic Education Act of Georgia (QBE) and recommendations given by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) were used for the establishment of i Likert-style questionnaire which was distributed among a group of twenty-eight science teachers. Three of the seven high schools located in a southeastern city of approximately 200,000 population were selected at random to participate in this study. These schools ranged in enrollment from 1100 to 1250 students.

One hundred and thirty-four seventh grade students served as subjects to determine if a correlation existed between reading achievement and attitude toward reading. Of these students, fifty were randomly selected for data presentation. The Intermediate Reading Attitude Index and Georgia Criterion Reference Test were used to obtain data.

The Georgia Criterion Reference Tests were designed to provide teachers with diagnostic information on each student's test performance. The GCRT is comprised of math and reading tests. Attitudes Toward Science Among Participants Of A Summer Science Enrichment Program, Jan. White

Eighteen high school and junior high school participants of a summer science enrichment program at a selected college in Georgia were the subjects of this study which described and measured changes in attitudes towards science as a result of the program. A fifty-item questionnaire, developed on a modified Likert scale of one to four and administered on a pretest-posttest basis, served as the measuring instrument. Differences between pretest and posttest responses indicated changes in attitudes towards science.

Changes occurred in 37.1% of all individual responses. Analysis of responses within the various categories of items revealed the greatest positive change in …

We Determined the Prevalence of Dementia in 927 Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke Aged ≥60 Years in the Stroke Data Bank Cohort based on the Examining Neurologist's Best Judgment Diagnostic Agreement among Examiners Was 68% (K=0.34). of 726 Testable Patients, 116 (16%) Were Demented. Prevalence of Dementia Was Related to Age But Not to Sex, Race, Handedness, Educational Level, or Employment Status Before the Stroke. The primary biochemical mechanisms involved in chemically-induced cell injury remain to be elucidated. Elevation of intracellular ea²⁺ is a common feature to cell death due to a wide array of toxic chemicals, and on this basis hypotheses have been put forth suggesting that the chemically-induced elevation of cytosolic ea²⁺ is responsible for the onset of cell death. The mechanism by which elevated ea²⁺ causes cell damage may involve activation of ea²⁺-dependent proteases, phospholipases and endonucleases (2). In July 1954, the Geneva Accords set up a mechanism by which the war between the French and the Vietnamese would end and peace would be established in Vietnam. According to the agreements, Vietnam was to be divided temporarily into two sectors. The country was to be reunited in July 1956 after a nationwide election.

This paper outlines the development of a knowledge-based prototype system for construction planning and scheduling and evaluates its effectiveness as a tool for improving the productivity of inexperienced construction project schedulers. The simulated annealing approach is applied to stock cutting. The conceptual approach proposed uses an energy function that measures the area of the rectangular enclosure of all the patterns to be nested, the level of similarity between pattern pairs, and the amount of overlap among patterns in evaluating various pattern configurations to be generated by the simulated annealing algorithm. Three methods for pattern configuration generation are considered. The first method uses heuristics to generate the initial configuration. The second and third methods use random selection and random placement of patterns

This study deals with the electrochemical production of thin (35 μm) copper films on anodized titanium substrates. The formation of a microporous oxide layer on the titanium electrodes greatly enhances the surface density of copper nuclei during a potentiostatic experiment so that a complete coverage of the cathode surfaces may be obtained after short term (20 s) polarization. Moreover, the oxide film may act as a parting agent and the copper films may be easily stripped from their substrates. The electrodeposition of copper from a fluosilicate electrolyte has been investigated by electrochemical techniques, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The diffusion coefficient of cupric ion in a fluosilicate solution has been determined with the aid of a rotating disk electrode using the mixed control Levich equation. Gold (Au⁺³) was used as a tracer to evaluate the mass transport properties of the system. The polarization behavior of the electrolyte was measured in the presence and absence of gas sparging on a vertical stationary electrode to study the effect of the mass transport contribution. Drag Reduction In Pipe Flows With Polymer Additives, Daniel W. Grabowski

Polyethylene Oxides (PEO) with molecular weights of 4 and 6 million and a Polyacrylamide (PAM) with a molecular weight of 15 million, were added to a turbulent pipe flow (15000 < Re < 50000) for drag reduction. The polymer was injected directly into the test section in one scenario, premixed in a tank and then pumped through the test section in the second. The injection addition method was found to be optimal because it subjected the polymer to lower amounts of shear stresses than the premixed addition method. A maximum of 75% reduction in drag was obtained. Even trace concentrations, as low as 2.5 WPPM (weight parts per million) , resulted in as high as 37% reduction in drag. Long thin high molecular weight polymers (PEO) were more effective than coiled high molecular weight polymer (PAM) . For the same molecular structure it was found that the polymer with heavier molecules had better drag reducing characteristics. The polymer with coiled molecules, however, is more resistant to shear stresses which break down the polymer into smaller less effective molecules. It was found that there is a critical concentration for the greatest drag reduction. This concentration is approximately 375 WPPM (.0375% byweight) of PEO for the injection method, and 500 WPPM of PEO for the premixed method. At greater concentrations, the viscosity of the solution increases such that the drag reduction characteristics of the polymer can no longer compensate.

This design project documents the design of two low cost, easily assembled, easily replaced charging devices useable in the electrophotographic process. The design process begins with the purpose of the chargers and a comparison to previous designs. Manufacturing processes and material selections are covered. Two plastic springs are designed and analyzed using classical equations and finite element analysis. Consideration is given to temperature and time effects on these springs. The major plastic structure (the housing) is analyzed for stress and deflection using finite element analysis with consideration given to thermal and creep effects. Datum selection is discussed. The impact of artificial intelligence on computer vision has provided various perspectives and approaches to solving problems of the human visual system. Some of the symbolic processing and knowledge-based techniques implemented in vision systems represent a meaningful extension to the low-level, algorithmic processing which has been emphasized since the advent of the computer vision field.
