Genotypic And Phenotypic Adaptations Of The Southern Oyster Drills, Stramonita Canaliculata And S. Haemastoma Floridana To Salinity., Li-Lian Liu Jan 1990

Genotypic And Phenotypic Adaptations Of The Southern Oyster Drills, Stramonita Canaliculata And S. Haemastoma Floridana To Salinity., Li-Lian Liu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Environmental and genetic effects on salinity adaptation in the southern oyster drill were estimated by their salinity-related genotypic (i.e. determined by electrophoresis) and phenotypic (i.e. determined by salinity tolerance and microcalorimetry) variations. The systematics of Stramonita haemastoma were studied using allozyme, radular and shell characteristics to exclude taxonomic differences which might have obscured variations in salinity adaptation. Radular and shell features are not reliable as systematic characteristics. S. h. canaliculata and S. h. floridana are separable using allozyme characteristics. Nei's genetic distance (D = 0.28) and the fixed allelic differences in Fum, LeuAla, Mdh, and 6-Pgdh indicate that the differences …

The Geology And Stratigraphic Evolution Of The North-Central Part Of The Early Archean Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa., Louise Dorothy Hose Jan 1990

The Geology And Stratigraphic Evolution Of The North-Central Part Of The Early Archean Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa., Louise Dorothy Hose

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The north-central part of the 3.5 to 3.2 Ga Barberton greenstone belt, southwest of the town of Barberton, contains both the northern and southern facies of the Swaziland Supergroup including, from base to top, the Onverwacht, Fig Tree, and Moodies Groups. The facies are divided by the Inyoka Fault, a major thrust fault that was reactivated by dextral shearing. The two facies of Fig Tree and Moodies strata appear to be laterally gradational. The Moodies Group, a 2800+ m sequence of predominantly lithic arenite, sublitharenite, and arkosic arenite was studied in four large, structurally isolated blocks in the north-central part …

The Theoretical And Empirical Implications Of Money In Asset Pricing Models With Special Reference To The Equity Premium., James Daniel Peterson Jan 1990

The Theoretical And Empirical Implications Of Money In Asset Pricing Models With Special Reference To The Equity Premium., James Daniel Peterson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the role of money, monetary uncertainty, and monetary policy for the pricing of financial assets. The existing literature is extended in several ways. First, closed-form solutions for asset returns are obtained, thereby allowing analytical results to be derived. Second, nominal equity prices and returns are computed, thereby allowing problems associated with estimating inflation to be avoided. Furthermore, shifts in the money stock that result from changes in monetary regime are distinguished from those that result from changes in monetary uncertainty. The introduction of money leads to qualitative predictions about asset prices that differ from those obtained in …

Experimental Investigation Of The Longitudinal Movements Associated With Highway Bridge Joints., Herodotos Antreas Pentas Jan 1990

Experimental Investigation Of The Longitudinal Movements Associated With Highway Bridge Joints., Herodotos Antreas Pentas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bridge deck expansion joint systems often develop serious problems requiring extensive and expensive maintenance. This has become a nuisance to users and to bridge engineers, and many states have been involved in investigations aiming to alleviate this problem. Results reported by various states regarding the behavior of specific joint sealing systems have been contradictory, indicating that the problems may not be inherent with the particular system. Rather, the problems may stem from a failure to properly assess the actual joint movements, inadequate design criteria, improper installation procedures or other factors such as differences in environmental conditions. In recognition of these …

Role Duality As Represented In The Antiabolitionist Speeches Of James Shannon., Barry Cole Poyner Jan 1990

Role Duality As Represented In The Antiabolitionist Speeches Of James Shannon., Barry Cole Poyner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation alleges that a speaker may juggle roles in a given rhetorical situation, what may be termed role duality. Role duality refers to a speaker's attempt to effect multiple intentions while fulfilling or partially fulfilling multiple role expectations. A purpose of this dissertation was to speculate further on the nature and function of role duality by analyzing the speeches of James Shannon. Correspondingly, another purpose was to evaluate through rhetorical criticism the pro-slavery, anti-abolitionist speeches of Shannon. Shannon (1799-1859), an evangelist in the Churches of Christ and an influential educator, delivered two principal speeches in defense of slavery: (1) …

Sensitive Cryogenic Transducer Development And Analysis For Use On Gravity Wave Detectors., Norbert Daniel Solomonson Jan 1990

Sensitive Cryogenic Transducer Development And Analysis For Use On Gravity Wave Detectors., Norbert Daniel Solomonson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The design and development of an improved superconducting inductively modulated transducer is discussed. The transducer is designed to optimize the performance of a 2-mode, resonant bar, gravitational wave antenna. A detailed theoretical analysis which includes all relevant noise sources is described. Conditions for optimizing 2-mode detector performance are derived and design curves are presented. Based on the results of this analysis, an optimal transducer has been designed for use on the LSU gravitational wave detector. The fabrication and testing of several optimal mass 400gm transducer resonators is described. The effects of low temperature annealing on the mechanical Qs of the …

Impact Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service Clothing Education Program., Evva L. Zeagler Wilson Jan 1990

Impact Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service Clothing Education Program., Evva L. Zeagler Wilson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objectives of this study were to determine: the practices of the LCES clothing program audience and of the general public, if differences exist between factors of the clothing program audience and the general public when controlled for urban or rural status, and if respondent characteristics are significant predictors of clothing practice factors. The research procedure utilized a descriptive design. A questionnaire was mailed to 400 randomly-selected Louisiana homemakers for each of four strata of Extension audience (urban and rural) and general public (urban and rural). Descriptive statistics were used to define the samples. Factor analysis was computed on 41 …

Specific Cell Adhesion And Its Application To Monitoring And Control Of Mixed Culture Bioreactors., Joseph William Roos Jan 1990

Specific Cell Adhesion And Its Application To Monitoring And Control Of Mixed Culture Bioreactors., Joseph William Roos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Specific cell adhesion was proposed as a means to separate and selectively remove or recycle a population in a mixed culture reactor. Theoretical analysis indicated that stable coexistence steady states of competitive mixed cultures and unstable recombinant cultures are possible with this method. Specific cell adhesion was used to separate populations of Escherichia coli based on their expression of maltoporin an outer membrane protein. This separation was possible due to maltoporin binding immobilized starch. Various methods for operating a packed bed of the immobilized starch support are reported. Operating conditions are identified that allow quantitative estimates of populations based on …

Existentialism And New England: The Poetry And Criticism Of Hayden Carruth., Anthony Jerome Robbins Jan 1990

Existentialism And New England: The Poetry And Criticism Of Hayden Carruth., Anthony Jerome Robbins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Hayden Carruth (b. 1921) has reached an advanced stage in his distinguished career as a poet, critic, and editor without having received the critical attention which he deserves and which has been accorded many of his less able contemporaries. He is a thorough-going existentialist, a dyed-in-the-wool Yankee, and an anarchist. The study uses these characteristics to explore the importance of his poetry and the nature of his complex relations with his chosen traditions. The first three chapters describe and analyze Carruth's development book by book from 1959 to 1983. The fourth chapter, "Carruth's Existential Revisions of Walden," considers Carruth's response …

"Her Excellence To Marre": The Problem Of Feminine Authority In Spenser's "Faerie Queene"., Mary Antonia Villeponteaux Jan 1990

"Her Excellence To Marre": The Problem Of Feminine Authority In Spenser's "Faerie Queene"., Mary Antonia Villeponteaux

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Spenser has difficulty expressing an acceptable version of his queen's authority in The Faerie Queene. He must valorize her monarchy and its power, but his uneasiness about female political authority emerges throughout the text. Like the Petrarchan poet who fictionalizes his abject devotion to his lady while he also creates and so controls her through the same fiction, Spenser praises the queen's authority while at the same time he attempts to control it and contain it in the poem. This uneasy process is exemplified in the figure of Britomart: Spenser initially presents her as the near-perfect champion of Elizabeth's signature …

Formation Evaluation Using Temperature Buildup Curves., Hui Xu Jan 1990

Formation Evaluation Using Temperature Buildup Curves., Hui Xu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents a formation evaluation method using the formation thermal properties (heat conductivity and volumetric heat capacity). The formation heat conductivity is determined by a modified Horner method, and the volumetric heat capacity is determined by the temperature buildup curve matching method. The comparisons show that the pressure and temperature diffusivity equations and initial and boundary conditions are similar. Therefore, the temperature diffusivity equation can be solved by a method similar to that used in solving the pressure diffusivity equation. The wellbore fluid storage effect is an important boundary condition and is considered in the solution of the temperature …

A Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Sesbania Drummondii On The Hepatic Cytochrome P-450 Monooxygenase Systems Of Chickens And Rats., Marcy Iva Banton Jan 1990

A Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Sesbania Drummondii On The Hepatic Cytochrome P-450 Monooxygenase Systems Of Chickens And Rats., Marcy Iva Banton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of an extract of Sesbania drummondii on the hepatic cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase system was evaluated in two experimental models, the White Leghorn chicken and the Sprague-Dawley rat. The cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase systems were compared using studies of catalytic activities and two major enzyme components, cytochrome P-450 and NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase. Two "classical" cytochrome P-450 inducers, phenobarbital and $\beta$-naphthoflavone, were used to probe induction mechanisms. S. drummondii induced opposite effects on the hepatic cytochrome P-450 component of chickens versus rats. Cytochrome P-450 specific content was increased 2-fold in chickens but decreased 2-fold in rats. Qualitative differences in microsomal proteins …

Crustal Extension In The Southern Snake Range And Vicinity, Nevada-Utah: An Integrated Geological And Geophysical Study., A. H. M. Shah Alam Jan 1990

Crustal Extension In The Southern Snake Range And Vicinity, Nevada-Utah: An Integrated Geological And Geophysical Study., A. H. M. Shah Alam

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study of late Cenozoic crustal extension in the southern Snake Range metamorphic core complex, the southern Snack and the Hamlin Valleys utilizes industry-acquired seismic data, two petroleum exploration boreholes, gravity data and surface geology of the adjacent ranges. Isotopic age determinations from outcropping igneous rocks were used to date the structural and tectonic events. The dominant structural elements of the southern Snake and the Hamlin Valleys are relatively young ($<$17 Ma), and are north-south striking, planar normal faults and associated half-grabens. The valleys are separated by an east-west striking accommodation zone and evolved independently by temporal and spatial interference and superposition of half-grabens. Progressive thickening of basin-fill sequences towards the bounding normal faults within each half-graben suggest semi-continuous slip along the bounding faults; interruptions are represented by angular unconformities which define three seismic sequences above the volcanic unit. K-Ar age determinations of 34 and 26 Ma from volcanic rocks in the Needles Range are correlated with the bottom and top of the volcanic unit; this volcanism was followed by inception of basin formation recorded by the oldest valley-fill sequence. The geometry of the oldest valley-fill sequence indicates that it continued to the west but is now eroded as the Snake Range core complex was uplifted. The intermediate valley-fill sequence records a major stage of tectonism synchronous with displacement along the Snake Range Decollement in the southern Snake Range between 17-18 Ma. Deposition of the youngest valley-fill sequence began at 10 Ma synchronously with a 45$\sp\circ$ change in the regional extension direction. A late-stage (Late Cenozoic) uplift was recognized in the south-east corner of the Snake Range core complex as a top lap in the seismic data and as a previously recognized unconformity in the outcrop separating angular, older Tertiary conglomerates from flat-lying younger conglomerates on top. Late-stage, local uplifts, as results of disruption of a previously bent elastic plate by normal faults and of differential deformation of various components of a heterogeneous crust in response to bending stress, superpose broad, regional uplifts and explain the total uplift in the Snake Range metamorphic core complex.

Failed Or Failing Lending Institutions Behavior And Implications For The Pricing Of Mortgages., Quang Vinh Do Jan 1990

Failed Or Failing Lending Institutions Behavior And Implications For The Pricing Of Mortgages., Quang Vinh Do

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As of 1989 more than one-fifth of the nation's federally insured saving and loans institutions have negative net worth. Very little is known, however, about their pricing behavior of financial assets. Most of the existing literature has focused on whether insolvent institutions bid up their cost of funds. The asset pricing issue of insolvent institutions has not been examined in the mortgage literature. This dissertation extends the literature by examining whether failed or failing saving and loan institutions offer their conventional fixed- and adjustable-rate mortgages at a discount relative to solvent institutions. A theoretical argument for the underpricing proposition is …

Individual Motives For Campaign Giving., Sheldon D. Beychok Jan 1990

Individual Motives For Campaign Giving., Sheldon D. Beychok

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The basic assumptions of this study are that individual contributors to campaigns are motivated by a desire to enhance their self-esteem through access, acquired through giving, and that large givers exhibit behavior that indicates a greater desire for access. Large givers exhibit such behavior to a significantly greater extent than moderate or small givers, and seek "status" by giving for other than politically-explicit reasons. It is hypothesized that: (I) All contributors have a greater sense of political efficacy and greater trust in government than the general public. (II) Individuals contribute as a result of conventional, acceptable motives, which are: (1) …

Isolation And Physical Mapping Of The Mitochondrial Chromosome From The Zygomycete Mucor Racemosus., Mary Louise Schramke Jan 1990

Isolation And Physical Mapping Of The Mitochondrial Chromosome From The Zygomycete Mucor Racemosus., Mary Louise Schramke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mitochondria were isolated from Mucor racemosus and DNA was purified from these organelles by cesium chloride/ethidium bromide isopycnic centrifugation. Examination of mitochondrial DNA samples with a transmission electron microscope revealed a circular mitochondrial chromosome approximately 63.8 kbp in length. Summation of restriction fragments of mitochondrial DNA separated by agarose gel electrophoresis yielded a comparable value of 63.4 kbp for the size of the intact molecule. Electrophoretic mobility and stoichiometry were determined for restriction fragments generated using nine different restriction enzymes. A physical map was deduced from single and double digestions of mitochondrial DNA with several of the restriction enzymes. The …

A New Approach To Analyzing High-Resolution Aerial Photographs Of Urban Areas., Timothy Dwayne Phillips Jan 1990

A New Approach To Analyzing High-Resolution Aerial Photographs Of Urban Areas., Timothy Dwayne Phillips

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation proposes a new approach for analyzing high resolution aerial photographs of urban areas. Analyzing aerial photographs is the process of constructing an overall description of a scene. It involves knowledge of visual sensors, computing systems, artificial intelligence, software engineering, and perceptual psychology. Researchers have had only limited success in this area. This dissertation considers a high level analysis approach. Most aerial photograph interpretation systems concentrate on analyzing an airport, roadway, or urban scene. Those systems, however, do not explain how they know they were examining such a scene. This dissertation concentrates on how to reach that point. It …

Coronary Heart Disease, Negative Affectivity, And Response Bias., Sharon Elaine Alcock Parisi Jan 1990

Coronary Heart Disease, Negative Affectivity, And Response Bias., Sharon Elaine Alcock Parisi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between negative affectivity, a broad band construct of negative emotions, and coronary heart disease. It was hypothesized the relation had been obscured in previous research by the tendency of some subjects to underreport negative affects. To test this hypothesis, 78 male cardiac patients between to ages of 37 and 65, who had undergone cardiac arteriography procedures within the previous 6 months, were given the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale Short Form (TMAS-S; Bendig, 1956) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale Form C (MCSD-C; Reynolds, 1982). In a series of multiple regression …

Studying The Iceberg From Its Tip: A Comparison Of Published And Unpublished Employment Discrimination Cases, Peter Siegelman, John J. Donohue Iii

Faculty Articles and Papers

Researchers often rely on published opinions to draw conclusions about cases decided by the courts, determinants of court decisions, and broader social phenomena. We demonstrate that 80 to 90 percent of employment discrimination cases filed in federal court do not produce a published opinion. There are good theoretical reasons to believe that the process generating a published opinion is not random and thus that samples of published cases will not be representative of all cases. Through a direct comparison of published and unpublished cases, we show that the two actually do differ in significant and predictable ways. Examining several studies …

The Narrative Creation Of Self In The Fiction By African-American And African-Caribbean Women Writers., Jerome P. De Romanet Jan 1990

The Narrative Creation Of Self In The Fiction By African-American And African-Caribbean Women Writers., Jerome P. De Romanet

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study entails an examination of the works of six authors (Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, Paule Marshall, Toni Morrison, Gloria Naylor and Simone Schwarz-Bart) whose works are shaped by values and perceptions influenced by their experiences of sexual, racial and social marginalization. While I acknowledge differences in origin, beliefs and personality, I explore the common ground which unites them, and more specifically the complex ties that bind their individual "writing I" with their environment--"communitas," to use Victor Turner's term. This study is also an exploration of the modes in which these six writers create their idiosyncratic selves out of the …

The Eating Disorders Diagnostic Inventory (Eddi): The Development Of A New Assessment Instrument., Cecilia Jo Davis Jan 1990

The Eating Disorders Diagnostic Inventory (Eddi): The Development Of A New Assessment Instrument., Cecilia Jo Davis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The area of eating disorders have been intensively by both the psychological and medical researchers over the last two decades. Differential diagnosis of the four most prevalent eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, compulsive overeating, and the non-binging obese) continues to be a problem for both researchers and clinicians. Diagnosis of these disorders has been complicated by the many changes in diagnostic criteria for each of the disorders. One consequence of these frequent changes is that there is no single self-report inventory for differential diagnosis which is based on currently accepted diagnostic criteria. The purpose of this study was the …

Exterior Vertices In Graphs And Realization Of Plurality Preference Digraphs., Weizhen Gu Jan 1990

Exterior Vertices In Graphs And Realization Of Plurality Preference Digraphs., Weizhen Gu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Part I: Peripheral and eccentric vertices of graphs. For a connected graph G, let P(G) and EC(G) denote the sets of peripheral vertices and eccentric vertices of G, respectively. In 1988 F. Buckley initiated the study of the class S of graphs G for which P(G) = EC(G). We provide several families of graphs which are in S. For certain graphs G with diameter equal to 2r(G) or 2r(G) or 2r(G) $-$ 1, we give criteria for P(G) and EC(G) to be equal. Also, for certain products, we characterize those pairs of graphs so that their product is in S. …

Some Problems For Graph Minors., Bradley Scott Gubser Jan 1990

Some Problems For Graph Minors., Bradley Scott Gubser

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation solves two problems relating to the structure of graphs. The first of these is motivated by Kuratowski's Theorem, perhaps the most famous result in graph theory. This theorem states the $K\sb5$ and K$\sb{3,3}$ are the only non-planar graphs for which both $G\\ e$, the deletion of the edge e, and G/e, the contraction of the edge e, are planar for all edges e of G. We characterize the non-planar graphs for which $G\\ e$ or G/e is planar for all edges e of G. The second problem we solve is motivated by Tutte's wheels theorem. An immediate consequence …

Popular Participation And Farming Systems Research And Extension--Examining The Central Visayas Regional Project 1 In Bohol, Philippines., Jonathan Manning Hubchen Jan 1990

Popular Participation And Farming Systems Research And Extension--Examining The Central Visayas Regional Project 1 In Bohol, Philippines., Jonathan Manning Hubchen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Central Visayas Regional Project 1 (CVRP) in the Philippines uses a Farming Systems Research and Extension (FSR&E) approach which addresses the interrelated components facing the rural household system. A major principle of FSR&E is local participation. This study was conducted to measure the level of popular participation in a CVRP "working area". The study measured local performance and importance of activities relating to the planning, execution, and evaluation of CVRP projects as perceived by beneficiaries. It determined which of the participation activities had a higher score for perceived importance than for perceived performance. Then it determined the relationship between …

Design Of A Two-Stage Procedure For Three-Class Screening., Chungtae Kim Jan 1990

Design Of A Two-Stage Procedure For Three-Class Screening., Chungtae Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A two-stage screening procedure is developed for a situation where the items can be sold in one of two markets, or scrapped. The item's selling price and product specifications differ for each market. In the first stage of the screening procedure, each item is inspected on a surrogate variable that is correlated with the performance variable of interest. If a decision is not reached at this point, the item is subjected to a second-stage inspection on a performance variable. A loss in selling price is incurred by the producer when an item that meets the specifications of a higher-price market …

An Exploratory Study Of Self-Efficacy's Network Of Relationships., Ginger Kay Kendell-Brainard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study explored the construct of self-efficacy and provided information about its relationships with intelligence, academic achievement, social skills, and family variables. Specifically, a correlational analysis examined the associations with academic and social self-efficacy, intelligence, academic achievement, and social skills. Exploratory univariate analyses investigated whether self-efficacy beliefs differed for students with varying family structures. Multiple regression analyses were utilized to determine significant predictors of self-efficacy. The results of the analyses indicated that academic self-efficacy was significantly correlated with intelligence, three areas of academic achievement, and social skills. Social self-efficacy was significantly correlated with social skills and two areas of academic …

The Influence Of Prior Performance, Slack, And Top Management Turnover On Divestiture And Subsequent Firm Performance., James Wilburn Logan Jr Jan 1990

The Influence Of Prior Performance, Slack, And Top Management Turnover On Divestiture And Subsequent Firm Performance., James Wilburn Logan Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research is an investigation of the influence of contextual factors on a multidivisional firm's decision to divest an entire business unit, and the effects of that divestiture on firm operating performance, market performance, and organizational slack generation and usage. Contextual influences and outcomes are assessed for a sample of 102 U.S. based firms representing 43 different industries, as defined by primary four-digit Standard Industry Classification (SIC). This research drew on prior research in strategic management, finance, and organizational theory to develop an integrated model of firm-level influences on divestiture and determine if those influences can be used to predict …

The Development Of The Toddler Behavior Screening Inventory., Paula Yvette Mouton Jan 1990

The Development Of The Toddler Behavior Screening Inventory., Paula Yvette Mouton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop a Toddler Behavior Screening Inventory (TBSI) to rapidly assess maternal-perceived toddler behavior problems. The TBSI is a 40-item socially valid measure intended for use in clinical settings as it will aid child care professionals in planning parent-child intervention strategies. Empirical methods were followed to construct the TBSI. The item pool was generated primarily by 187 mothers with toddlers and relevant professionals. Items were reviewed and formatted before 312 mothers rated the initial 93-item TBSI in terms of behavior frequency and problem severity in order to eliminate items. Forty items were retained based …
