Foreground And Background: Three Literary Treatments Of The Bubonic Plague, Gwenyth Hood
Foreground And Background: Three Literary Treatments Of The Bubonic Plague, Gwenyth Hood
English Faculty Research
Though many diseases bring suffering and death, plagues strike the imagination with special awe because they threaten death to whole cities and nations. So it is not surprising that novelists have treated of plagues now and then. A visitation of bubonic plague is the central event in Daniel Defoe’s Journal of the Plague Year and Albert Camus’s The Plague. In Alessandro Manzoni’s The Betrothed, it is the culminating event, through which all the plot lines are finally resolved. Though much separates these writers, including language, culture, century. and philosophical outlook. each presents the plague accurately according to the scientific knowledge …
Medieval Love-Madness And Divine Love, Gwenyth Hood
Medieval Love-Madness And Divine Love, Gwenyth Hood
English Faculty Research
Lovers in the Middle Ages had a tendency to go mad. In fact, they were subject to a whole range of disorders which nowadays are considered symptoms of mental illness, from pining away to outright suicide, to raging and raving madness. Of course, then as now, these manifestations of inner turmoil were not mutually exclusive. Malory's Sir Lancelot goes raging mad at one stage of his career and starves himself to death at the end of it. There are also more or less pure examples of each type: of pining away, Malory's Elaine, the fair maid of Astalot; of suicide, …
The French Declaration Of The Rights Of Man And Citizen And The American Constitutional Development, Rett R. Ludwikowski
The French Declaration Of The Rights Of Man And Citizen And The American Constitutional Development, Rett R. Ludwikowski
Scholarly Articles
The thorough examination of the influence of the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen on constitutions has long awaited proper implementation. The importance of the French act has never been questioned but its multi-sided impact has not been satisfactorily evaluated.
With respect to the American Constitution, this problem merits a specially comprehensive study. Although the American and French politics at the end of the eighteenth century were carefully examined, the links between the constitutional developments of both countries has never been researched exhaustively. The reasons seem to be threefold. First, with exception of the American Constitution, the …

Optical-Absorption In Undoped Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet, M. E. Innocenzi, R. T. Swimm, M. Bass, R. H. French, M. R. Kokta
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Room‐temperature optical absorption over a large dynamic range is reported for single‐ crystal undoped yttrium aluminum garnet (Y3Al5O12 or YAG). Absorption results are presented for the energy ranges 1.8 to 3.0 and 4.5 to 6.5 eV. For this work, ultraviolet (UV) absorption measurements were performed on four different boules of Czochralski‐grown undoped YAG. Absorption features were observed at 4.8 and 5.6 eV which can be attributed, at least in part, to trace impurity concentrations. Along with the UV measurements, calorimetric absorption results are presented at several laser wavelengths in the visible and near infrared (IR). The calorimetric results suggest a …

Physics: Faculty Publications
We report calorimetric measurements of the organic conductor (TMTSF)2ClO4 in the quantum limit. In addition to the field-induced spin-density-wave (FISDW) phases, we have measured the magnetic-field-dependent specific heat associated with the recently discovered reentrant phase. In terms of a semiempirical model, we find that the reentrant transition is second order, but that the electronic density of states is greatly reduced in the reentrant phase. We also observe a specific-heat signal corresponding to the anomalous fast oscillations which are known to coexist with the FISDW phases.

Surface And Bulk Infrared Modes Of Crystalline And Amorphous Silica Particles: A Study Of The Relation Of Surface Structure To Cytotoxicity Of Respirable Silica., R S. Pandurangi, M S. Seehra, B L. Razzaboni, P Bolsaitis
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Surface IR (infrared) modes of crystalline and fumed (amorphous) silica particles, calcined at temperatures up to 1095 degrees C, have been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The ability of these same particles to lyse cells has been measured by a hemolysis protocol. The untreated crystalline and amorphous materials differ by a factor of 40 in specific surface area, and the intensity per unit mass of the sharp surface silanol band near 3745 cm-1 in the amorphous material is an order of magnitude larger than in the crystalline material. A similar difference is observed in the lysing potential of the …
