Tourism And Cultural Exchange: An Historical Perspective, John Towner Jan 1990

Tourism And Cultural Exchange: An Historical Perspective, John Towner

Visions in Leisure and Business

The paper examines aspects of cultural exchange between Britain and Europe (particularly France, Italy and Greece) from the 16th to the 19th century. This relationship was partly associated with British tourists. The nature of the cultural exchange reveals the changing attitudes of the tourists and their images of the host countries; from admiration of contemporary cultures to a feeling of superiority; from veneration of past cultural achievements to sentimental views of existing societies. Themes also include the social networks between hosts and guests and cultural transfer from Britain to Europe aided by tourism. These considerations lead to wide political and …

Swords Into Ploughshares: Defence Heritage Tourism As The Peaceful Uses Of The Artefacts Of War, G. J. Ashworth

Visions in Leisure and Business

Historic heritage has proved to be one of international tourism's most important primary resources. Such heritage contains an inevitable ideological component. The artefacts and place associations of war are one set of such resources which exercise a growing fascination and attraction for tourist visits. This defence heritage tourism may in practice be a vehicle for a variety of ideological ideas, including, despite the seeming contradiction, international peace and understanding. The distinctive characteristics of the resource, the variety of visitor motives, and the dominant ideologies in presentation will be examined, using North-West European examples. This in turn may lead to the …

The Local Importance Of Tourism: The Case Of San Francisco, Steven E. Spickard

Visions in Leisure and Business

The importance of tourism as a stimulus to local economies is well known. Few areas have been able to accurately quantify this economic importance, however, allowing for ranking of tourism along side other local industries. San Francisco (SF) has undertaken a multi-faceted research program which revealed that far more visitors come to the City than were previously counted.

Through primary research, for the first time SF is able to estimate the number of people staying with friends and relatives. Surprisingly, this "missing" market segment constitutes more visitor-days than those staying in the City's 23,000 hotel rooms. Due to the more …

Non-Profit Contracting: An Old Path To A New Fairness, Robert M. Wolff Jan 1990

Non-Profit Contracting: An Old Path To A New Fairness, Robert M. Wolff

Visions in Leisure and Business

This article explores the trend of privatization among public, quasi-public, and private institutions. The primary factor that must be resolved is whether a cooperative or a competitive approach is used. Morgan's model of privatization, with greater utilization of the private non-profit sector, coupled with voluntary involvement of dedicated individuals, seems to hold the most promise.

The Purchase Involvement Of Repeat Visitors To A Destination Resort, John C. Crotts Jan 1990

The Purchase Involvement Of Repeat Visitors To A Destination Resort, John C. Crotts

Visions in Leisure and Business

An understanding of the decision making processes repeat visitors use is important to resort managers since the economic health of their property is dependent to a large extent by such patronage. Employing the typology of Newman and Webel (16), this study found that few customers could be characterized as loyal patrons. In other words, the vast majority of repeat visitors in this data set were not beyond the influence of marketers. The relative abilities of respondent's age, education, planning time and distance traveled are examined in an effort to account for the degree of complexity repeat visitors used in vacation …
