Women Denied Partnerships: From Hishon To Price Waterhouse V. Hopkins, Gerald A. Madek, Christine Neylon O'Brien

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

This article reviews the seminal Supreme Court decision governing access to partnership status in professional settings in the context of a sex discrimination challenge. As women entered the workforce in record numbers, they thrived against the backdrop of the 1964 Civil Rights Acts. There were still obstacles however, to the complete participation of women in the workforce one generation later. Although legal precedent existed for the equal treatment of women in low and middle management jobs, this was not the case for women seeking executive and partner-level jobs. Like the fool for the king, the modern child of the Romantics represents for the adult original human nature in all its ambiguity and ambivalence. The child's nature, like the fool's, is both fallen and innocent, amoral and beyond morality and what is even more confusing, alternately one or the other. The child's unsocialized presence reveals and exposes the imperfections of the socialized world of adult artifice and hypocrisy. Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article conceptualizes media ecology as an analytical lens for understanding how successive communication technologies generate ideology, shaping language, cognition, and social organization. Integrating systems thought, Marxist materialism, and time space analysis, it traces transformations from the typographic revolution to contemporary television and computer environments. Case illustrations ranging from monastic clocks and the printing press to satellite linked financial markets reveal that each medium reconfigures cultural values such as individuality, privacy, rational discourse, and civic participation. The discussion underscores the responsibility of communication administrators to anticipate technological biases, cultivate critical literacy, and adapt curricula amid accelerating digital change.
