Celebrants Or Celebrities, Worship Or Suicide, David Kocka O.F.M. Jan 1990

Celebrants Or Celebrities, Worship Or Suicide, David Kocka O.F.M.

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

The North American Roman Catholic bishops have suggested that our present age is one of "supreme crises." If this be the state of things, then such a statement goes to reassert the challenging aspect that Christ presented to his hearers. He referred to the scribes and pharisees as "hypocrites," that is "under-thinkers" or rather those who were concerned with the "pseudo-crises," over and against the "supreme crisis." Christ's incarnation caused his hearers to make a judgment whether to live either the "kingdom" or "history." If an age is faced with a similar "Supreme Judgment," then part of that judgment …

Visible Words: The Image Is The Message, Sandra Essex Jan 1990

Visible Words: The Image Is The Message, Sandra Essex

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

From our earliest existence, we have been creators. We have made images, art, with our hands. We drew on the walls of our cave homes. We formed clay into pottery and decorated it. We took metal from the earth and hammered it into objects of beauty and objects for adornment.

Holy Things: Foundations For Liturgical Theology, Gordon Lathrop Jan 1990

Holy Things: Foundations For Liturgical Theology, Gordon Lathrop

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

Christian corporate worship has biblical foundations. This is so, of course, in the most obvious ways: at the heart of the meeting the book called the Bible is read and then interpreted as having to do with us. Sometimes, as ceremonial preface to that reading, the book is carried about, even enthroned. Furthermore, the text of the Bible provides the source of the imagery and, often, the very form and quality of the language in prayers, chants, hymn texts, and sermons. Psalms are sung as if that ancient collection were for our singing. Snatches of old biblical letters are …

Characteristic Discharge And Suspended-Sediment Relationships In Two Glacier-Fed Rivers In The Karakoram, Richard E.J. Kelly Jan 1990

Characteristic Discharge And Suspended-Sediment Relationships In Two Glacier-Fed Rivers In The Karakoram, Richard E.J. Kelly

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate relationships between meltwater flow and production and flushing of suspended-sediment beneath two alpine glaciers. During the ablation seasons of 1987 and 1988, discrete, hourly measurements were taken of discharge, stage, suspended-sediment concentration and electrical conductivity in two rivers draining catchments of the Bualtar and Batura Glaciers in the Karakoram, N. Pakistan. The discharge time series of the Bualtar River reveals that flow varies over a daily period of three to four weeks, at a diurnal level and over one to four hours. Over all three time scales, electrical conductivity is inversely proportional …

Water Quality Dynamics In Meltwaters Draining Peyto Glacier, Alberta, Christopher Bradley Jan 1990

Water Quality Dynamics In Meltwaters Draining Peyto Glacier, Alberta, Christopher Bradley

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Variations in the quantity and quality of meltwaters draining Peyto Glacier, Alberta, are assessed to examine to what extent meltwater characteristics might be indicative of any distinctive source and routing of water through a glacierised drainage basin. Continuous monitoring of solute concentrations of the principle melt-stream, Peyto Creek, was undertaken for significant periods in 1982, 1984 and 1987, coupled with measurements of suspended sediment concentration at the glacier terminus. Discharge of meltwater was determined for periods in 1982 and 1987. Supplementary monitoring of hydrogen-ion variation and total solute concentration was undertaken at additional sites within the basin, at a stream …

Identifying Directional Properties Of Spatial Point Patterns An Investigation Of Two Methods, Rolf Puchtinger Jan 1990

Identifying Directional Properties Of Spatial Point Patterns An Investigation Of Two Methods, Rolf Puchtinger

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Analyses of spatial point patterns tend to focus on deviations from randomness by either clustering or regularity. One assumption of these analyses implies that the point generating process is equal in all directions. However, the association of the location of points with a process biased in one or more directions is widely neglected due to a lack of appropriate statistical procedures. This is surprising, since patterns generated by directional processes are important in Geography. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the blunt-triangle method and the third moment method for their potential of identifying directionality in spatial point patterns. …

Bed Load Measurements: Nottawasaga River And Selected Tributaries, Ontario, Canada, Marylou B. Burkard Jan 1990

Bed Load Measurements: Nottawasaga River And Selected Tributaries, Ontario, Canada, Marylou B. Burkard

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Between July, 1989 and March, 1990, bed load samples were taken from ten bridge sites on the Nottawasaga River and three of its tributaries. The Helley-Smith Sampler was used to collect bed load samples, the DH-48 Suspended Sediment sampler was used to sample the suspended load, and velocity estimates were obtained with a Marsh-McBirney Model 512M electromagnetic current meter. Results show that the Pine River, which is a tributary of the Nottawasaga River, had higher bed load transport rates than the Nottawasaga River. The other tributaries, Willow Creek and Boyne River, transported less. During the summer and fall, bed load …

Depositional And Deformational Structures In Three 'Esker-Like' Ridges, Southwestern Ontario, John D. Parish Jan 1990

Depositional And Deformational Structures In Three 'Esker-Like' Ridges, Southwestern Ontario, John D. Parish

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Dundalk Till Plain in southwestern Ontario is crossed by five “esker-like” ridges, believed to have been formed simultaneously during the early stage of the mid-Port Burce Stadial. The three middle ridges are the focus of this research, with each ridge having a different topographic form, but the length of, and distance between, ridges are similar. Occurrences of differing depositional structures and the presence of deformational structures over short lateral and vertical distances reveal the complexity of processes involved. The dominant primary sedimentary structures are large-scale tabular cross-beds. Many individual cross-beds are composed of poorly sorted, matrix-supported gravels. High variability …

Using a stakeholder approach, data were collected on measures of hospitalization, adaptive functioning, community integration, social support networks, employment, housing, service use, and quality of life. Results indicated that the program clients …

Determinants And Distinguishing Variables Of Pro-Disarmament Behaviour And Responsible Environmental Behaviour, Lisa Sara Nemiroff Jan 1990

Determinants And Distinguishing Variables Of Pro-Disarmament Behaviour And Responsible Environmental Behaviour, Lisa Sara Nemiroff

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The possibility of nuclear holocaust and the destruction of our environment are two issues that threaten all of humanity. As one would expect, disarmament proposals and proposals aimed at improving the quality of the environment have received overwhelming public support. However, while the public often engages in behaviour congruent with their attitudes toward environmental problems, they do not demonstrate attitude-behaviour congruence with regard to nuclear arms race issues. In addition to attempting to substantiate past research results concerning the determinants of peace and environmental activism, the purpose of this thesis was to identify the variables that bring about this discrepancy. …

The Retention Of Children's Mental Health Workers In Northern Ontario, Sydney Jean Parlour Jan 1990

The Retention Of Children's Mental Health Workers In Northern Ontario, Sydney Jean Parlour

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this qualitative study, I explore with Northern Ontario children’s mental health administrators and clinicians their concerns about employee retention, given the high costs of turnover in human (providers and consumers) and financial terms. I use an ecological framework, borrowed by community psychology from the biological sciences, whereby retention is considered to be not only a work-related phenomenon but also influenced by a variety of non-work factors. In the belief that employee retention is best understood from a holistic, multi-level perspective, I review literature from a variety of related areas. I consider the characteristics of rural life, practice and practitioners; …

Responsible Environmental Behaviour: A Test Of The Hines Model, Karen Hayward Jan 1990

Responsible Environmental Behaviour: A Test Of The Hines Model, Karen Hayward

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

As the number and salience of environmental problems have increased so have the number of studies which investigate environmentally responsible behaviour. Hines (1984), after conducting a meta-analysis of this literature, identified crucial variables which predict responsible environmental behaviour. While Hines has proposed a crude model which contains the variables thought to explain this type of behaviour, she has failed to hypothesize about the relationships that exist amongst many of these variables. The present study, therefore, was designed to develop a more elaborate model which attempts to explain some of these relationships, as well as predict responsible environmental behaviour. The sample …

Homily At The Opening Service, George W. Hoyer

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

"No other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, Jesus Christ." It is a measure of the experience of faith when we echo Thomas, "My Lord and my God." It is a measure of the experience of faith when we acknowledge "The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner;" when we exclaim, "This is the Lord's doing and it is marvelous in our eyes"; when we say with Thomas, "My Lord and my God!"

Development Of An Adoption Agency As Supplement To Current Services Of A Residential Group Care Facility, William E. Painter Jr

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The shortage of adoptive parents trained and prepared to successfully parent sexually abused children to youth indicated a need for this residential group care facility to develop a proposal for the addition of a specialized adoption agency as an adjunct to current agency services.

The author developed a proposal for the addition of a specialized adoption agency based upon extensive research and a needs assessment of referral sources. The plan for the addition of the adoption agency was therefore based upon not only the agency's own experience in placement of the graduates of its preparation for adoption program, but also …

Modifying Negative Attitudes Toward Reading Of Eighth Grade Literature Students Through An Individualized Reading Program, Cynthia J. Johnston

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum was designed to provide a setting where negative attitudes towards reading in some eighth-grade literature students would be modified. The first goal of this practicum was that members of the eighth-grade literature class would have regular opportunities for successful experiences in reading, since reading for enjoyment usually means having a positive attitude towards reading. A second goal for this practicum was that members of the eighth-grade reading class will enjoy reading this year.

The author presented an individualized reading program as the curriculum for the eighth-grade literature class. Students chose their own reading materials and read during and …

Increasing Business And Parental Involvement In Grades Four Through Seven By Forming Partnerships Between The School And Local Businesses, Kay S. Hinson Jan 1990

Increasing Business And Parental Involvement In Grades Four Through Seven By Forming Partnerships Between The School And Local Businesses, Kay S. Hinson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum was designed to improve the educational experience of students in grades 4 -7 by increasing the involvement of local businesses and parents in the total education of the students. Because middle grade students have very little experience or understanding of the business world in which they will function more and more as they grow older, it was decided that local businesses would be solicited to form partnerships with the school.

The writer determined a need for increased business and parental involvement for students in grades 4 - 7 based upon teacher input, the State Department of Education's emphasis, …
