A Comparative Study Of Hospice Vs Nonhospice Nurses' Attitudes Toward Death And Dying And Level Of Death Anxiety, Debra Panko Harber
A Comparative Study Of Hospice Vs Nonhospice Nurses' Attitudes Toward Death And Dying And Level Of Death Anxiety, Debra Panko Harber
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive survey was to assess nurses' attitudes toward death and dying and level of death anxiety. Sixty nine nurses from nonhospice and hospice settings were surveyed. Findings indicated the hospice nurses had a more positive attitude toward death and dying and lower level of death anxiety than nonhospice nurses; Frequent exposure to death and dying was significantly related to attitude toward death and dying for both the hospice and nonhospice groups. The number of funerals attended was also influential in shaping a more positive attitude toward death and dying for the nonhospice group; The category of …
Government Land Management And The Free Market In Southern Nevada, William Robert Jacobs
Government Land Management And The Free Market In Southern Nevada, William Robert Jacobs
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
About 93.4 percent of the land area of southern Nevada is controlled by government agencies. The control of such a great amount of land may represent an impediment to the action of a free market in southern Nevada; The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is the largest of several government land managers, consequently this paper concentrates on BLM regulations and practices. The BLM had little power until the passage of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976; In addition to the FLPMA, four other laws have particular significance to BLM land management actions in southern Nevada: the …
The Income Gap And Symphony Orchestras, Joseph Anthony Volpi
The Income Gap And Symphony Orchestras, Joseph Anthony Volpi
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Symphony orchestras are the supposed victims of a malignant disease entitled "Baumol's Disease" which occurs as costs rise at a faster rate than earned income. The gap between earned income and costs is called the "Income Gap." The remedy is injections of cash to stop the disease from expanding; This thesis takes actual data from the American Symphony Orchestra League and tests Baumol's diagnosis. The income gap does exist and it is growing over time; To determine if the income gap is an incurable disease, a more comprehensive model is designed including output composition variables, demographic variables, and the lagged …

System Identification Of A Hydraulically-Actuated Robot, Andreas Otto Ranz
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A feedback control system has been developed to operate an elastic robot arm. This work was funded by a grant from the U.S. Army Research Office. The goal of this investigation was to experimentally determine the operating curves, performance plots, and flow coefficients needed to produce an appropriate servovalve signal when operating the hydraulically-actuated robot arm. Through the assimilation of data collected in the laboratory the parameters were determined.

A Study Of Art Unions In The United States Of America In The Nineteenth Century, Jane Aldrich Dowling Adams
A Study Of Art Unions In The United States Of America In The Nineteenth Century, Jane Aldrich Dowling Adams
Theses and Dissertations
During the first half of the nineteenth century in many cities in Germany, England and the United States, free and public galleries were opened to encourage the purchase of art works. Some sponsoring organizations were controlled by artists and some by interested lay persons. All of the sponsors hoped to educate the public and to elevate artistic taste as well as to sell works of art. Many of the organizations offered a premium in the form of a yearly engraving to induce interest and to promote membership. Often there was an annual distribution of paintings and other works of art …

A Pilot Study To Improve Academic Learning Time In Physical Education, Robert Walker
A Pilot Study To Improve Academic Learning Time In Physical Education, Robert Walker
Theses : Honours
Academic Learning Time in Physical Education (ALT-PE) is defined as the portion of engaged time when a student is involved in practice appropriate to his or her ability. The amount of time students are appropriately engaged in physical education activities has been found to have a high correlation with student achievement (Godbout, Brunelle & Tousignant, 1983; Graham, Soares & Hanington, 1983; Harrison, 1987; Phillips & Carlisle, 1983; Placek & Randall, 1986; Silverman, 1985). The teacher has control over the amount of time children can practise the criterion skill in a particular lesson. Investigating the way in which the students spend …
The Effect Of The Teaching Of An Explicit Top-Level Expository Text Structure On The Structure Of Year Seven Children's Semantic Memory, Les Phul
Theses : Honours
In order to examine the effect of the teaching of a top-level expository structure through writing on children's schemata for text structure, children in year seven were asked to display graphically the relationships between 42 randomly presented text items related to a central topic. The text items were designed to approximate the kinds of information that may be found in an encyclopaedia or a science text about a given topic. One class of children was then allocated to the control group and the other to the experimental group. The experimental group was taught the top-level structure for a scientific report …
Base-Line Equivalence In Three Paired Groups Prior To The Implementation Of Primary Nursing, Julien Harris
Base-Line Equivalence In Three Paired Groups Prior To The Implementation Of Primary Nursing, Julien Harris
Theses : Honours
Primary nursing, one of the methods advocated for assigning nurses to care for patients, has been the subject of much investigation. The value of the system remains unclear. A review of the literature indicated a lack of consensus with positive, equivocal, and negative findings. This study formed phase one of a collaborative Project which measures the effects of the implementation of primary nursing over a two year period. This portion of the Project studies the base-line data of three paired nursing units, to determine whether there was evidence of base-line equivalence of the study and control groups, as determined by …
The Effect Of Employers' Attitudes On The Implementation Of Computer Aided Manufacturing Techniques In The Furniture Industry In Western Australia, Brian Ferguson
Theses : Honours
In this study, the incorporation of computers in industry is compared with the industrial revolution. It is envisaged that computers in industry will bring about similar sweeping changes to the workforce as those that took place during the eighteenth century. However, it is noted that, thus far, Australian industry leaders in general remain ignorant of these changes (Eckersley 1988,p.3) and the Western Australian furniture industry is no exception. If Australian industry in general and the Western Australian furniture industry in particular, are to avoid a similar decline in economic competitiveness to that experienced by European countries {Marcum 1986,p.28 ), there …
The Role Of The Media In Determining Fashion In Perth: A Study In Cultural Ambiguity, Kerry Giles
The Role Of The Media In Determining Fashion In Perth: A Study In Cultural Ambiguity, Kerry Giles
Theses : Honours
This study is contextualised within the international fashion framework. The notion of core and periphery has been established in preparation of the application to the local context. The practice of mimicry is examined. This has involved the comparison of global trends with the Perth market. The examination of the fashion condition focuses on the sources of inspiration. Core areas in which fashion concepts are created are identified and their relevance to the Perth fashion scene established. Post-colonial cultural theory has been applied as a critique of fashion in a marginal area. Sources of visual and written media have been identified …

Computer-Aided Drafting/Design In Technical Drawing In W.A. Secondary Schools, Edmund V. Beagley
Theses : Honours
This study was conducted with the intention of identifying what effects may have occurred within upper school Technical Drawing in W.A. high schools following the recent introduction of Computer-Aided Drafting/Design (CAD). With CAD being in its infancy in W.A. high schools it was decided that this study should attempt to answer four specific questions:- i) Were there any problems experienced by Technical Drawing teachers following the introduction of CAD? ii) Are there any educational benefits to either students or teachers to be derived from the introduction of CAD? iii) What methods of teaching and evaluating CAD generated drawings were being …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Retelling With The Aid Of A Story-Map Procedure With Weaker Readers, Madeleine Boekeman
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Retelling With The Aid Of A Story-Map Procedure With Weaker Readers, Madeleine Boekeman
Theses : Honours
This study examines the effectiveness of the 'Retelling with the aid of a story-map procedure' as an instructional approach which could help weaker readers in their second year of schooling. Based on the literature and research findings which support a view of language as a developmental, holistic and natural process, the 'Retelling with the aid of a story-map procedure' was chosen. It was hypothesised that it would help the weaker readers make connections between oral language and written language, develop meaning seeking behaviours and increase their 'data pool' of linguistic knowledge. The goal of this study was to seek answers …
Digital Image Processing Using Mathematical Morphology, Andrew Mehnert
Digital Image Processing Using Mathematical Morphology, Andrew Mehnert
Theses : Honours
This dissertation is a natural extension of my undergraduate research project entitled, "Digital Image Processing”. Whilst my undergraduate project dealt with a number of classical digital image filtering techniques such as spatial convolution and frequency domain filtering via the Fourier transform, this dissertation focuses on an alternative approach employing Mathematical Morphology. In contrast to classical filtering techniques, which often geometrically distort the original image, morphological operations, used sensibly, essentially preserve shape and geometry. Mathematical morphology therefore lends itself to image processing applications requiring the identification of objects and object features within an image. Herein basic morphological operations are developed, firstly …

Basic Communication Course Annual
This volume is the result of tremendous dedication and the ongoing belief in the need to provide a publication outlet for research and information dedicated solely to the basic communication course. Many people have contributed their time, energy and talents to this volume. I first want to recognize the excellent work provided by the Editorial Board who worked to meet my deadlines and provide useful feedback to the authors to help them revise and/or resubmit their research. Without excellent cooperation from each of the reviewers, the annual would not be complete.
The Future Of The Basic Course, Judy C. Pearson, Paul E. Nelson
The Future Of The Basic Course, Judy C. Pearson, Paul E. Nelson
Basic Communication Course Annual
This article recommends some changes that should occur in the basic course. The prescriptions are based on four notions: the course must include accurate information; it should be inclusive in nature; it must be responsive to our contemporary world and to our students' current and future communicative needs; and it must provide a unique contribution to our students' education. The authors suggest that the course has not been sufficiently attentive to accuracy, inclusiveness, responsiveness and uniqueness; furthermore, contemporary changes require increased vigilance in these areas.
Communication Apprehension In The Basic Course: Learning Styles And Preferred Instructional Strategies Of High And Low Apprehensive Students, John Bourhis, Charlene Berquist
Communication Apprehension In The Basic Course: Learning Styles And Preferred Instructional Strategies Of High And Low Apprehensive Students, John Bourhis, Charlene Berquist
Basic Communication Course Annual
Students who experience high levels of communication apprehension are at a distinct disadvantage in school when compared to those who do not. This is particularly true in basic courses in public speaking and interpersonal communication which students may be required to take to satisfy general education requirements. This study examines the relationship between communication apprehension, learning style, and preferred instructional strategies for students enrolled in a basic course in interpersonal communication. The results indicate that communication-apprehensive students are more passive than active in their learning styles. Both low and high communication-apprehensive students prefer instructional strategies which are consistent with their …
An Investigation Into The Communication Needs And Concerns Of Asian Students In Speech Communication Performance Classes, Ester Yook, William J. Seiler
An Investigation Into The Communication Needs And Concerns Of Asian Students In Speech Communication Performance Classes, Ester Yook, William J. Seiler
Basic Communication Course Annual
The University of Nebraska is one of the many institutions of higher education in the United States with a growing foreign student enrollment. Consequently, the numbers of foreign students enrolled in speech communication classes has been increasing. There, however, is currently a lack of systematic investigation into the needs and concerns of foreign students in speech performance classes. This study investigates the needs and concerns of Asian students in speech performance classes.
The study uses three methods to determine the needs of Asian students: (1) participant observation, (2) survey and (3) focus group interviews. The findings show that Asian students …
