The Immune Responses Of Carp, Cyprinus Carpio L., Following Direct Immersion Immunization, Alan Foster Bridges Jan 1990

The Immune Responses Of Carp, Cyprinus Carpio L., Following Direct Immersion Immunization, Alan Foster Bridges

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The investigations presented in this thesis include studies on a) the immune responses of carp following direct immersion immunization and subsequent intraperitoneal (i.p.) challenge, b) the uptake and accumulation in carp of a direct immersion vaccine and c) phagocytic uptake by carp peritoneal exudate cells (PECs). To assess the cell-mediated immune response of carp, a micro chemotaxis technique was developed, measuring the production of chemotactic factor-like activity in supernatants from incubations of pronephric cells with antigen. In no case were serum antibody titres or a cell-mediated immune response detectable after immersions alone in antigen. It was found that an i.p. …

The Immune Response Of The Grey Mullet, Chelon Labrosus (Risso, 1826), To Cryptocotyle Lingua (Creplin, 1825), (Digenea), Bradbury Patrick Wood Jan 1990

The Immune Response Of The Grey Mullet, Chelon Labrosus (Risso, 1826), To Cryptocotyle Lingua (Creplin, 1825), (Digenea), Bradbury Patrick Wood

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The ability of thick-lipped grey mullet to mount both humoral and cellular immune responses to Cryptocotyle lingua has been demonstrated here for the first time. Of the 3 procedures for immunisation investigated, namely exposure to live cercariae, intraperitoneal (ip) injection of whole killed cercariae and ip injection of a cercarial sonicate, the former gave the highest primary antibody titres with a peak response at 4 weeks post infection. Peak titres occurred at 5 and 7 weeks after immunisation by ip injection of sonicated cercariae and whole killed cercariae respectively. An enhanced secondary antibody response was observed following challenge by ip …

In Vitro Selection And Characterization Of Lead Resistant Somaclonal Variants From Daucus Carota L., Janice Mary Bateson Jan 1990

In Vitro Selection And Characterization Of Lead Resistant Somaclonal Variants From Daucus Carota L., Janice Mary Bateson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Lead was shown to inhibit both callus initiation and callus growth in cultures of Daucus carota L. subsp. sativus (Hoff. Thell.) cv. Nantes ''Tiptop'' and ''Nanthya''. Taproot explants of Daucus carota were stressed with lead. The callus cell lines which initiated under this stress were shown to exhibit resistance to the effects of lead ions. The growth of the selected and nonselected cell lines on non-lead containing media was comparable and the resistance possessed by the selected cell lines did not result in reduced growth rates in the presence of lead. The resistance characteristic was shown to be stable and …

Factors Affecting The Pathogenicity Of Yersinia Ruckeri, Maria Dolores Furones Nozal Jan 1990

Factors Affecting The Pathogenicity Of Yersinia Ruckeri, Maria Dolores Furones Nozal

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A group of 42 strains of Yersinia ruckeri were characterized and found to show homogenous biochemical profiles. The optimal conditions for in vitro culture of a representative strain of Y. ruckeri were established. The virulence was increased by passage through fish. A standard method for infection of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with Y. ruckeri was devised. As a result cultures of Y. ruckeri grown on full strength of BHIA for 5 h at 30°C in static conditions were found to be most suitable for infection by both intraperitoneal injection and immersion. Virulence of stored cultures was maintained for over 1 …

Immune Response Of Carp Cyprinus Carpio (L.) To IChthyophthirius Multifiliis (Foquet), With Reference To Events Within The Epidermis, Martin Leslie Cross Jan 1990

Immune Response Of Carp Cyprinus Carpio (L.) To IChthyophthirius Multifiliis (Foquet), With Reference To Events Within The Epidermis, Martin Leslie Cross

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The in vitro and in situ immune responses of carp Cyprinus carpio to Ichthyophthirius multifiliis were investigated in order to characterise the immune mechanisms involved in protection. 'O' group and adult carp were immunised against I.multifiliis by controlled infection procedures. Sterile immunity was not achieved; theronts were observed to penetrate the skin of immunised fish, although in the majority of cases this did not lead to successful trophozoite establishment. It was concluded that most parasites prematurely exited the epidermis of immunised fish within two hours of penetration as an active survival strategy. Trophozoites remaining in immunised fish beyond two hours …

Stalking The Squeeze: Understanding Commodities Market Manipulation, Richard D. Friedman Jan 1990

Stalking The Squeeze: Understanding Commodities Market Manipulation, Richard D. Friedman

Articles

This article addresses the perplexing and important problem of how to distinguish valid, large-scale trading activity from a squeeze. Part I analyzes and reformulates what I will call the price-impact test, according to which manipulation is conduct motivated by its impact on price. This test, I contend, states a necessary but not sufficient condition for characterizing conduct as a squeeze. Part II offers a substantially different test, which I call the modified-sanctions approach. Under this approach, the price-impact test is used as a preliminary safe-harbor standard. The modified-sanctions approach goes further, however, recognizing that the essence of a squeeze is …

Administered on a bicycle ergometer, the Wingate Anaerobic Test was given to 15 members of the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team four different times over the course of a season. During the season the team participated in no specific conditioning program for anaerobic power and relied on regular practices and games for all conditioning.

The Wingate Anaerobic Test measured maximal anaerobic power, anaerobic capacity, and …

A Comparison Of Locus Of Control Between High School Athletes Who Experienced Burnout And Those Who Did Not, Mary Elizabeth Smith Griffin Jan 1990

A Comparison Of Locus Of Control Between High School Athletes Who Experienced Burnout And Those Who Did Not, Mary Elizabeth Smith Griffin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to compare the locus of control between those individuals who indicated they had terminated their high school athletic participation because of burnout and those who did not. It was hypothesized that athletes who dropped out of sport due to burnout would have a higher external locus of control (individuals who perceive that outside factors control their lives) as compared to those who did not. Students (N = 189) who were enrolled in required wellness classes at the University of Northern Iowa served as the subjects for this study. Based on data collected from a …

Survey Of Public Profiles, Attendance, And Preferences For Cedar Falls/Waterloo Community Leisure And Arts Activities, Steven Michael Wikert

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Community administrators who plan leisure and arts activities for the public, many times lack adequate information to base important decisions upon. Therefore, possessing the knowledge and techniques needed to gain this information becomes of vital importance to both profit and non-profit agencies.

Some questions that might arise for administrators when trying to develop programs, schedules, or facilities include: What are the characteristics of attenders and nonattenders? What are the most effective publicity methods for outreach? What programs need to be retained or initiated? What community leisure and arts events does the public prefer? How does local attendance at cultural events …

A Study To Identify Stress Factors Of Early Childhood Special Education Teachers, Brenda Marie Hanken-Crawford Jan 1990

A Study To Identify Stress Factors Of Early Childhood Special Education Teachers, Brenda Marie Hanken-Crawford

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Stress, an everyday fact of life, can be either positive or negative (Bradfield & Fones, 1985a; Truch, 1980). When faced with too little stress, a lack of productivity may occur, however, when faced with too much stress, anxiety and unhappiness may result (Johnson & Harkins, 1984).

A growing interest has developed concerning factors contributing to the stress of special education teachers (Fimian & Santoro, 1983). While the literature on stress has grown, research is very limited in the area of stress and early childhood special education teachers.

The purpose of this study was to identify (a) the stress producing variables …

Teaching Values Through Literature, Carla Jean Church Jan 1990

Teaching Values Through Literature, Carla Jean Church

Graduate Research Papers

Schooling is the common experience of all youth. Teachers, each day, in every class, are dealing with values. The standards that are set, the actions approved, the way the subjects are presented, the teachers personal relations with students, stimulation of consistent thought and acceptable conduct all exert strong influences (The Educational Policies Commission, 1951). It is no longer a question of whether or not educators should teach values, but rather how should this be accomplished .. Through a historical look at values education, teachers can gain the necessary background knowledge which will enable them to incorporate values throughout the curriculum.

A Project Involving Cooperative Learning Pairs Working With Problem-Solving Computer Software In A Middle School Setting, Timothy J. Feinup Jan 1990

A Project Involving Cooperative Learning Pairs Working With Problem-Solving Computer Software In A Middle School Setting, Timothy J. Feinup

Graduate Research Papers

Within the past ten years, schools have increasingly embraced the development of the computer as an important media aid in the instruction of problem-solving thinking skills. Cooperative learning strategies, rather than individualistic or competitive learning styles, during this same period, have become a major trend in developing conceptual instructional tasks, including the development of problem-solving strategies. This paper presents a curriculum development project for middle school students that combines the planned activities and outcomes of computer-assisted instruction with cooperative learning to develop problem-solving strategies and positive social skills.

Changes in assessment methods in other curricular areas are examined and the author delineates evaluation methods that would more adequately match the goals of the new mathematics curriculum.

Integrating Music With Other Content Areas, Charlesetta Michelle Dawson Jan 1990

Integrating Music With Other Content Areas, Charlesetta Michelle Dawson

Graduate Research Papers

A kindergarten class gains practice in reciting the letters of the alphabet by singing "The Alphabet Song." Musical instruments made by third grade children are used in experiments during a science unit on sounds. The mathematical concept of fractions is reinforced when fourth graders calculate musical note values of familiar tunes. Fifth grade students study the Civil War through the examination of lyrics of many songs representative of that era. In all four situations, music was utilized in the teaching of various content areas.

The Effects Of Divorce And Resulting Single-Parent Family Environment On The Social And Educational Development Of The Gifted Child, George E. Lowry Jan 1990

The Effects Of Divorce And Resulting Single-Parent Family Environment On The Social And Educational Development Of The Gifted Child, George E. Lowry

Graduate Research Papers

Divorce can be a very difficult time for adults, but it can be even more difficult for the children, who often do not understand all that is happening around them or why it is happening. They have no control over events that are taking place. Worst of all, they often have no one to whom they can talk, no one who is not somehow involved in the divorce situation. Gifted children are among the children who are frequently caught up in such a situation, and who later must adapt to living in a single-parent family as a result of divorce. …
