Use Of A Bath Calendar As A Cue For Bathing For Patients Suffering From Alzheimer's Disease, Cathy Jean Bailey

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

This pilot study determined the ability of Alzheimer patients to recognize bath day using a bath calendar with a specific visual cue to denote bath day. A quasi-experimental design using a control and experimental group receiving a pre and post test was employed. Sixteen subjects scoring on the MSQ in the middle dementia area and living in an area nursing home participated in this study. Caregivers of subjects in the experimental group were responsible for reinforcing the cue to the subjects daily for four (4) weeks. Pre and post recognition and MSQ scores were tallied and differences between groups were …

International Regulation Of The Sale And Use Of Pesticides, Charlotte Uram Jan 1990

International Regulation Of The Sale And Use Of Pesticides, Charlotte Uram

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

This Article discusses international regulation of the sale and use of pesticides. It examines and compares national, regional, and international models as a means of achieving effective international regulation. For the national model, this article selected the United States because it was the first country to impose national restrictions on the export of pesticides. For the regional model, this article selected the European Economic Community because it has sovereign powers, and has been a market-driven entity. For the international model, this article selected the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization because it has the most far-reaching code on the regulation …

Strangers In A Strange Land: Foreign Compulsion And The Extraterritorial Application Of United States Employment Law, Michael A. Jr. Warner Jan 1990

Strangers In A Strange Land: Foreign Compulsion And The Extraterritorial Application Of United States Employment Law, Michael A. Jr. Warner

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The increasingly interdependent nature of the world economy has made commonplace the overseas employment of United States citizens by United States multinational corporations. When an American company employs a United States citizen in a foreign country questions arise as to what extent the United States may regulate employment activity taking place outside of United States territorial boundaries. Historically, principles of territoriality and nationality have constrained the ability of a sovereign state to prescribe conduct occurring outside of its boundaries. Under traditional principles of jurisdiction, employee relations fell predominantly under the control of the local authorities where the person or persons …

Preserving Minnesota's Natural Heritage, Nelson T. French Jan 1990

Preserving Minnesota's Natural Heritage, Nelson T. French

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Minnesota has a rich natural resource base that can be preserved only by maintaining and expanding private and public conservation programs that contribute toward the protection of forests, soils, waters, native plants, wildlife, natural communities, and endangered species. Although efforts to protect Minnesota's natural heritage have been a model for the Midwest, increasing pressure to plow up prairie, drain wetlands, consume old growth forest resources, and urbanize the landscape continue to erode an ever decreasing base of natural habitat. Significant alteration of our state's presettlement biological communities has occurred and, in spite of conservation laws and rules adopted over the …

Human Fetal Tissue: Scientific Uses And Ethical Concerns, Carol A. Tauer Ph.D. Jan 1990

Human Fetal Tissue: Scientific Uses And Ethical Concerns, Carol A. Tauer Ph.D.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Human fetal tissue has been used in research for decades, but recent attempts to implant fetal neural tissue as therapy for Parkinson's disease have stimulated discussion of ethical and policy issues. In late 1989 a moratorium on federal support of fetal tissue transplantation research was indefinitely extended, based on the connection between this research and elective abortion. Four abortion-related objections to the use of fetal tissue can be identified: 1. The procedures of abortion and tissue procurement are linked in practice; 2. One who uses fetal tissue is complicit with the abortions which provided the tissue; 3. The prospect of …

Use Of Limestone, Lime, And Dolomite For So2 Emission Control In Kentucky, Garland R. Dever Jr.

Information Circular--KGS

Flue-gas desulfurization and atmospheric fluidized-bed combustion systems for sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission control have been installed at 13 coal- and gas-fired plants and one research laboratory in Kentucky. Limestone, lime, and dolomite are the principal SO2 sorbents used in these systems.

Nine coal-fired, electricity-generating plants in the State have installed wet-scrubbing systems for flue-gas desulfurization. Lime-based scrubbers are using Thiosorbic® lime, produced from the Camp Nelson Limestone (Ordovician) of north-central Kentucky, and carbide lime, a byproduct from the manufacture of acetylene in Louisville. Limestone-based scrubbing systems at three of the plants have used stone from the Warsaw, …
